I feel that it should be legal? Why? There's no reason for it not to be. Smoking and alcohol abuse is far more harmful, yet, wait... those are legal too.

I feel that shit like "omfg gawd says no" doesn't justify anything. Canada/America isn't built on a church, there's seperation.

I think it ought to be legalized. Here are my reasons:
  • If it is legal, then it can be regulated. This would mean higher-quality stuff since there could be quality standards set (think FDA), and also since it would open the door to commercial marijuana, which would presumably be considerably higher-quality stuff (due to dedicated growing fields, processing plants, etc) than privately-grown marijuana (which constitutes most non-medical marijuana).
  • If it can be acquired legally, then that eliminates most of the need to acquire it illegally, which would likely reduce robberies, assaults, etc., related to acquisition of marijuana.
  • If it's legal to get it, then that reduces the appeal of doing something "naughty" since it's not quite as "naughty" as before.
  • It could be taxed, which would increase the funds available to the government (not that avoiding a pointless war wouldn't have done so several times over already, but that's a debate for another day)... and it'd still probably be cheaper than it is now because there's less risk involved in selling it.
And that's just the logistical side, let alone the commonly-held view that if everyone smoked marijuana, there'd be more peace in the world.

And, for the record, I don't smoke the stuff... never have. Though I'm semi-interested in trying it sometime.

here is my opportunity to shock everyone here.... I'm going to agree with the rest of you.... in some degree at least - it's a little out of character right?

well, on this issue, I can't deny the benefits of legalizing pot.... it just makes sense....

along with the reasons Vystrix gave.... I would like to add something, or expand with my opinions

crime would definately drop.... I heard like 75% of robberies/muggings are drug related. ie. to get money to buy drugs...

it would definately save a lot of people money.... not only those that buy, but also the governement.... however, the government definately needs a strict way to control volumes of the product and track who gets what and how much.... that's just how I feel about it.... I'm not saying restrict it, but don't make so much of it that.... there should also be "intoxicated" levels that restrict you from driving a car and working heavy machinery.... sure, it's possible to drive a car while high.... same as when you are drunk.... but I doubt you are as aware and your reflexes are as high in all cases while high.... just a safety thing....

oh, and there should also be a you can't be high at work policy.... because I think we all know how apathetic high people are.... and that doesn't make for a good working environment....

hrm.... other than that, I can't think of any concerns I have right now....

Yeah, that's pretty much how I feel. Chances are, they're going to use it either way.

well, that's the other thing.... it is happening anyways... but under more dangerous circumstances....

and, with street bought stuff.... there can always been something else in with what you think you're buying....

legalizing would definately get rid of that worry

I do not support marijuana usage, but I see no reason to keep it illegal. There are equally negative effects to using alcohol and smoking, and yet these substances are legal. In fact, marijuana is probably far more healthy for you than some of the drugs we have on the market that are federally approved. In recent news, we see many types of drugs causing heart attacks (Anacin?) in extremely small parts of the population, and drug advertisements caution you on all the horrible side effects you could experience.

I do wonder, however, if the companies that build prisons (this is often contracted out) have the government in their pocket. With criminal marijuana you get lots of extra criminals. Take away those criminals, you will reduce demand for prisons. Whether this is true or not, I don't know. It's only a theory.

Having to worry about marijuana distribution and possession also makes law enforcement that much harder. I think we have better things to worry about than pot smokers and dealers. That, and pot is nearly ubiquitous from what i've seen. A war on marijuana is a war on your own people.

Georgree: about apathy at work, yeah I agree, mostly. My friends have told me that really simple tasks are much easier while stoned, such as dishwashing, but I don't know firsthand.

Oh god no. They're infinitely more confusing. But your mind turns every single action into a bizzare philosophical extract of the world. But you feel time change and you don't really notice getting tired because you are thinking too much and zone out and just continue your usual phyiscal routine.

Depends on the strain, means of intake and form of marijuana.

Let's say that I get a bag of shake, smoke 2 grams in a bong...Well, it won't really be too good or too long of a high.

I just finished getting off of an AWESOME high from some good hash-AK47 using joints and bongs. I started smoking at 3:30, had my last toke at 4:45. It was one of the most enlightening venture on marijuana lately. Given that it has given me my thesis for a reader response and had me buy a PDA. Ha ha, to think, a lot of people brand it as bad, but it has allowed for a horrifyingly intricate and abstract thinking to occur and allow me to write an obsecnely complicated thesis.

Yay. Shocker!

I, a pot user, don't want marijuana legal. Its hard enough to keep people from using marijuana as it is and yeah.

Wait, so you're saying that you disagree consciously with something that you do?

It isn't really that bad for you.

I don't think that it should be legal in the sense that you can just walk around anywhere and light up a joint. I'd be more in favor of decriminalizing it and allowing people to not be arrested/charged if they had a few joints in their pocket or something like that. Or at the very least not allow it to be smoked in front of and in certain buildings (government buildings, schools, etc.)

Ah, that's another danger. It's like with alcohol; what you do under the influence. I guess since the after effects aren't as bad, there would need to be control for where you could smoke, yeah.

No, marijuana is not legal.

the title was badly worded.... the poll question however was not.... if you had read it properly.... you would know that

"Should marijuana be legal or not?"

I think it should be legal, with restrictions. We don't need people to be driving when they're stoned; people drive bad enough already. But, with certain very obvious restrictions, I don't see any harm that could come from legalising (spelling?) marijuana....

I find this very interesting. Yes, my first post outside romhacking .

The editor of High Times magazine is coming to our college to debate this very issue Tuesday with a retired NARC officer. Should be interesting.

Here's my thoughts. Enforce the same restrictions as with cigerettes involving buildings (20 feet or so from an entrance to a building). Do not operate machinary while stoned. Can't think of anymore restrictions that would be necessary, that nearly covers anything I can think of except it may not be permissable during work or stoned during work.

I do not believe it will get rid of as much crime as it seems. But it will definitely take away from the marijuana factor in the mix.

I do not smoke marijuana, do not recommend it; tried it, disliked it. A lot of stuff people disagree with happens, alcohol and cigerettes, marijuana used responsibly may not be so bad.

Imagine if the government made it legal. Different brands of marijuana advertised in magazines saying "smoke responsibly" at the bottom of the ad.

Tamarin Calanis: From what my parents always say, almost my entire family smokes a little ganja... quite a bit, theyare actually better drivers while smoking pot. It makes them paranoid and they lose that sense of invincibility, so they drive more carefully.

Really, this subject has been approached like 50 times lately, I think it should be legal. A lot of Americans smoke it, we don't have a wave of a bunch of dead people, and from what I know, no one has ever died because of pot, that wasn't illergic to it or some technicallity. I mean actually died from smoking pot, not in a car crash.

I suppose it is.

Its not healthy and there is already enough children (<12) smoking it. You think that number will drop if its legal and sold in stores? Most places don't card you unless you look 12 and even than, how differcult is it is to give a stranger money and have them buy it for you? Its how I got beer until I found a place that didn't check ID.

If you sell it in the stores, people won't end up buying it from the stores. Its cheaper just to grow it and its easy to do. If you can't grow it, I'm sure you can buy it from someone for cheaper. It doesn't benefit the stores. Its a drug and its addicting. The most common things stoled in stores around here besides candy is beer and cigrettes. Not to mention how many people kill each other for it already. Goverment can't control it like they can the tobacoo companies. It doesn't benefit the goverment any by legalizing it.

What they need to do is make the punishments not so harsh for using it.
