Originally posted by XeogredUh, hello? These are software filters. As in, they check all incoming traffic and stop it if it finds the word, or checks what's being loaded int he browser for these words, and nukes it. Proxies won't help. (note: this is based off of people saying that it does it on one computer and not on another. That's a symptom of software-based blocking. Some filters, like the one my school district uses, block tons of stuff, including: * message boards (this) * games * chat * everything that could help you out with something) (edit: congrats, stupid toolbar. Turns out that it'll delete the contents of the message box if you push Ctrl+U, and probably other things.) (edited by Xkeeper on 02-10-05 11:31 PM) |

On the topic of schools limiting student computer use; yeah most schools here do it. The machines are meant for study and learning... not for playing games or chatting and stuff like that. However -- most younger (kids, younger adults) computer users find it very very hard to concentrate on a specific, solitary task on a computer. The urge to multitask is overwhelming.... When I was admin at a school, I used to tell the kids off whose multitasking erred too much to the point of chatting/games/forums and not enough on study. If they could balance their multitasking, I didn't mind.... |

Trust me, those "special" school blocking software things, are very easy to take down and bypass. Seriously, we have "Web Filter" or something like that, you can even just simply sit there and go to the same url over and over again, with enough requesting, you'll get through. And, another note, it's seriously easy to take them down. |

The one we have in schools here is a little tricky, but then it's not exactly on school software, it's state government operated, etc. But kids still find some ways through.... they just don't last for long before those holes are patched. |

Common filters like in phpBBs can be bypassed easily. So we might need an intelligent filter which filters out also HTML or board code. If know a phpBB, where the word "ROM" is censored. When I wanted to write "ROM-hacks" (when I only mention that - hacks themselves don't include the actual ROM usually), I could write R[ and easily wipe out the filter. Or simply user another BB-tag or combine then to outran the word censor. Hence spam mails: v.i.a.g.r.a or V!4gr4; a filter won't recognize that - but we can read that (edited by Surlent on 02-11-05 11:18 AM) |

well, if they don't circumvent for good reason then action could be taken... Intelligent filters are difficult to write but most of us here wouldn't try to circumvent the system unless we want to show a point. If we circumvent for the sake of chewing someone out, well that person will be banned almost instantly afterward... |

I myself don't see anything useful in a (bad) word filter. One of my logics has always been "If you really think the content of site X is so bad and horrible, then don't go to site X". In the past I've had a column site wher I was pretty vulgar vocabulary wise sometimes. I got numerious emails telling me that my site was so called 'offensive', which made me think (and I replied with) every time I got one of those mails: why be a stubborn idiot and read on if you think it's so offensive? Meh, I don't like filters. Not only I don't see the need off one, but I hate it when I type something and stuff is filtered out. |

If it was put in just for people with crappy programs like that, bypassing it wouldn't be an issue, because it'd bypass the program too. Really, you should just look for a way to kill the program, like a 3rd-party task manager. They're never any sort of challenge. | |||

Originally posted by SurlentProbably not. Chances are, anything that would get past a simple board filter would also get past the school's filter. I doubt it would catch anything much more complicated than spacing out the letters. As I understand it, the issue is preventing the board from getting stopped by other filters, rather than avoiding offending poeple. Nobody except jews and canadians want to avoid offending people. |

I go to a School, where it isnt easy to overide the filter or security. I tried bringing in Lunar Magic on a floppy disk, and the computers wont load it. Turns out, they have banned ALL exe's and allowed some they like (for schoolwork, etc). Seeing as this is the talk in this thread right now... does anyone know a way to bypass this? |

Renaming it to one of the allowed ones will usually do it. If not, try changing the extension to .scr. |
