I found the article. http://www.boingboing.net/2005/02/06/chicagos_public_scul.html Apparently, it was not purchased by the taxpayers, but donated. Also, just do a google image search for Cloud Gate. There's plenty of pictures of it. (edited by Apophis on 02-08-05 03:22 PM) |

Hmm.... the fact that it was donated doesn't really make it all that much better. Besides, are the donators paying for the upkeep? Not according to that article, they're not. |

Just a thought: What would they actually do if you were caught taking a picture? Fine you? Who gets the money? The artist or the council? Take your camera? Again, who gets the camera? Take you to court? Jail? You could get someone to stand in front of the statue, and then if anyone asks, you could say you were photoing the person, not the statue. That way, you'd be off scot free. I think this is proof that people in general are morons (myself included, by the way). |

That sculpture looks so stupid and looks like a waste of money. To me at least. In some of those pictures it looks as if some other people are taking pictures too. | |||

Now put another one beside it, and you egt infinity Seriously, this is so dumb. Why the hell would they do this? It is a tourist attraction, yet you cant take pictures of it? Besides, it is ugly and stupid anyway. |

what the heck? it's a big blob of shiny mercury... anyways, it is copyrighted and he believes no one should take a photograph of it--yet the state of illinois has it published on their website for tourism. So, what makes the governement different from the public? |

I think it looks neat. This reminds me of something that happened at the Eaton's Centre in Toronto... The owners of the mall paid an artist to make a peice which turned out to be a flock of geese... They're suspended from the celing and it looks REALLY neat. But one year the owners put little santa hats on all the geese at Christmas time and the author sued. 'Cos he was a jerk. And won. Even though the Eaton's Centre had paid for and bought the geese, the owner still had the copyright, and the case was closed with something about "Intellectual property" still belonging to the owner? I don't know. But yeah. Rich artists are assholes. Or totally bat-shit insane. |
