Helping out a friend on this one.

Ephrion Noirpe (3:25:33 PM): first I had a nonfunctioning CD drive
Ephrion Noirpe (3:25:46 PM): the cable wasn't plugged in fully, so I fixed that
Ephrion Noirpe (3:25:53 PM): WIndows won't detect the drive
Ephrion Noirpe (3:26:13 PM): So I spend about half an hour looking for stuff online trying to fix it
Ephrion Noirpe (3:26:21 PM): And now, all of my effort has given me
Ephrion Noirpe (3:26:27 PM): a CD drive with the tray popping out
Ephrion Noirpe (3:26:32 PM): That still won't work
Ephrion Noirpe (3:27:38 PM): .. with a red light

That's an AIM screen name, by the way and I'm sure he'd be more than happy is someone IMed him if what he told me isn't enough.

Is the IDE cable even plugged in the right way? A constantly-on light usually means it's in upside-down.

What brand is it? I have a very nice Creative 52x drive that died on me shortly after I got it...first, it wouldn't read any discs (it would shuffle around a bit and then spit the disc out), then soon after, the computer wouldn't recognize it at all. The light was a constant yellow-orange at this point (which is weird, because it's only supposed to be either red or green, depending on whether it's in "turbo" mode or not). It worked for a short time after moving it into a different computer, though...

If everything checks out OK, BIOS- and cable-wise, the drive's probably gone bye-bye.
