Seriously, are there any gaming sites that don't have 1342132423413241x0F banner ads, or "CLICK HERE TO READ [what you want to read], ADVERTISING ADVERTISING"? Both Gamespy and Gamespot suck because of this. What gaming sites do you guys go to? (edited by windwaker on 02-04-05 02:17 AM) |

Firefox x Gamespot = Shitty reviews without mad popups. 1up.com is still okay. |

Or you could just go to Game Rankings and pretty much pick and choose which reviews you want to read. And besides, any site is fun with Firefox*. Or at least safe. * - Or a good pop-up blocker. |

* * - * is overused. 1up.com I found about a week ago, and I really like how most of what they write is -really- indepth. It beats Gamespot, that's for sure. |

I actualy goto the gamefaqs board, sure there maybe is alot of stupidity there. But sometimes you do pick up some intresting news... and rumours. Apparently there is rumours about DS online for example, but i'm as always taking thoose with a grain of salt. Then, rumours around Nintendo usually aren't that false. DS was started as a rumour after all, if anyone remember... I hadn't seen 1up until know, but at least I read a few fun reviews. Sometimes I like to read reviews for games that I bought, even if I like them I want to see other people opinions too. <.< |

www.gamesradar.com is my gaming site of choice. They're affiliated with MSN but Xbox news is a bit thin on the ground. Weird that.

Originally posted by Kitten Yiffer That's what I usually find myself doing these days. Checking forums for news. Like WW said, I don't care about paid subscriptions for actual good info (IGN, GameSpy, FilePlanet), or for stupid banner ads (Oh these are great on IGN these days, nowadays there an entire page and you're forced to "click" somewhere else to continue to an article or whatever you wanted to see), and all that other lame crap. Magazines are fine, honestly. I don't see why people diss them so often, I'm fine with my free subscription to Gamepro (Love this magazine, way better than biased EGM in my opinion, and they actually do PC games) and my 5$ every 10 month subscription for Game Informer is pretty nifty too. (I do this through Gamestop, not sure if that's a nationwide thing?) (edited by Xeogred on 02-04-05 10:24 PM) |

Yeh, gaming sites are like the media these days: biased and sucks. gamesradar.com is a british site (I think), so I guess I'll just wallow in my gamespot misery. |

I'm pretty sure the Game Informer thing is nationwide, and actually started back when Gamestop was Funcoland. Did anyone else note the page briefly being FUBAR at the bottom? |

What sort of info are you looking for? For FAQs and reviews, I just go to GameFAQs. It does have ads, but Firefox + AdBlock kills 'em off. As far as the boards go, they vary very widely in quality. The extremely popular game boards tend to move fast and have assloads of dumb people, but there's still good information to be found, and the quieter game boards (at least for the games I like) are usually decent to great. You just have to try to ignore the stupidity when it appears.

I guess I'd call that a type of "educated gamer" complex. The immature kiddies tend to gravitate towards the best-sellers, while the more educated players can be found talking about games that aren't so popular. Of course, you'll still have your mix on each board but it's slanted. |

Colleen - That pretty much describes it. Similarly, certain special interest and OS boards (Game Design and Programming and UNIX/Linux are two that come to mind offhand) tend to attract smarter, more well-behaved people. Sure, there are occasional arguments over Windows vs. *nix, but generally, the conversation quality is pretty good. windwaker - True, true...I totally forgot about that. For pictures, I usually just visit the external review links. Some of those sites are choked with ads (like, as you mentioned, Gamespot), but I ignore or block them. Unfortunately, I don't know of any major site with picture articles that doesn't have a buttload of ads. |

Game Informer Haven't really gone there myself yet, but it is the same as the mags that we carry at work, and I tend to look through those when I have free time at work, and it seems to have good info. |

Well, I've found that the only semi-good corresponding website to a magazine is 1up.com. Everything else's reviews come late, because they want people to buy the magazine without just viewing it online.

*DarkSlaya points at thread title. Not really. The fact that most of them are full of ADs while they don't really need that much makes it worse. |

Originally posted by DarkSlaya Which is why I really don't go to gaming sites anymore. Usually I'll hear it through word of mouth, or I'll go to the game's actual site. Its either way too many ads, pop-ups, you have to sign up, you have to pay, or some other crap like that. |

Well, the companies can make $5-$10 for each thousand people see their ads... And they get like 50,000 unique hits a -month-. They can rotate ads, too, so that's like ten ads, getting like 30,000 hits a day... |
