Althogh I apologize ahead of time for not commenting on my own beliefs about the ethical impllications of this science..well, i really haven't decided yet. Either way, it's an absolutely fascinating read. The human nueral structure is an amazing thing... i don't know, i'm still just 'wowed' by the article. Thoughts? |

If they make it illegal in US, they sure continue with this in Sweden (where alot of the stem cell research is done nowdays...) or in Europa basically. Creating a hybrid could just give the hybrid alot of sickness and may even die not so long after birth, besides I doubt that if they sucefully did grown a hybrid it dosen't need to look like an Anthropomorphic animal (furry). "What new subhuman combination should be produced and for what purpose? At what point would it be considered human? And what rights, if any, should it have?" ...if "sub-humans" will exist, then it will be "rascism" (or maybe even specism) all over again. Edit: Heh, you took this from slashdot? It's on slashdot at least, and since slashdot is one of the most famousn nerdy resources. Alot of people will know about it at least. (edited by Kitten Yiffer on 01-27-05 09:12 AM) |

It seems pretty weird, and does bring up images of the mad scientist going "MUAHAHAHA!" over some twisted inhuman being on a steel table- But the things like the pigs with human blood seem to be more helpful to humankind- saving human lives- than hurtful.Originally posted by Trapster |

And at Stanford University in California an experiment might be done later this year to create mice with human brains. ...PINKY AND THE BRAIN! Seriously, someone else who thought that? XD ...althought it would be scary if they did mices who devoloped human behavior. Not like they can talk, as their anatomy prevents that. |

It's certainly disturbing. Has anyone seen the Ape / Human hybrid? They seem to think it's one that slipped past because it was conceived naturally (however sick that is). It's quite frigthening to look into his eyes and realise that he is half human. His features are quite human as well... His face looks flatter, his eyes and forehead are a little less wild. It's unnerving. I really do think this sort of research is uncalled for until we've exhausted every other option. We're far away from that eventuality. |

....This is the kind of thing that just... gives me a really bad feeling. Even if some of it isn't an ethical breach, I feel it's a pretty cruel type of science. There is no reason to expect a mixed species to function correctly. I just hope they know what they're doing. | |||

Originally posted by Retro-Kasumi What about George Bush? In any case, I see nothing wrong with it. People, in my opinion, have to get it through their thick heads that there is nothing "special" or sacred about being a human, or about humanity in general. The arguments made against the chimeras in that argument are, frankly, ridiculous. "Creating chimeras, she said, by mixing human and animal gametes (sperms and eggs) or transferring reproductive cells, diminishes human dignity." That's stupid bullshit concieved by someone who has an overinflated opinion of himself and, to a lesser extent, his race. "he believes animals have the right to exist without being tampered with or crossed with another species." That's also stupid bullshit, because they're not grabbing dogs off the street and shoving human genes into them. The gametes they use to make the chimeras would otherwise go into other lab animals or not be used at all. So no existing animal is being tampered with. It's not like hybrids are a whole new thing. There are tons of species of hybrid plants created in labs, and no one cries that this is a crime against nature. Basically, it's like this: prohibiting chimera research wouldn't stop some crazyass scientist who wanted to make himself a part-animal, part-human army. All that it would prohibit would be research for purposes of curing a variety of diseases that plague us today. There is no plan of making a half-human, half-anything else species and letting it go in the wild. Don't get caught up in the hype. |

You all DO know that I'm going to be that crazy scientist, right? Really I wouldn't mind this science going on even if we did abuse it and make demi-humans or anything really. I will be surprised when I see a person that is half dog half human, but I won't care. I doubt the science will even get that far, chances are no one will use it to make dog-humans. |

No picture in the article on "Humanazee." I'm curious to see what happens if some of these chimeras come to term. It may give invaluable data regarding our own sociology/psychology, or that of whatever it's been crossed with. There's many other things this could do...some very good...some very bad...most inbetween. |

Well, a certain psychologist realised that we are acting like animals already we just don't think on it. He also noticed that Animals in Zoo are like Humans who lives in cities... as stressed and such. I see Humans as a type of ape, and that Humanzee is just one reason why I do. |

Originally posted by Kitten Yiffer Since we are closely related to apes and share much of their DNA it is possible to classify humans as a type of ape. But using the promotional gimmick of a circus to get more people to see their unusual performing chimp is not a good reason. Oliver the "Humanzee" is simply a mutant Chimp as proven through genetic testing. This is the supposed "Humazee", named Oliver. (edited by CoughSyrupAbuser on 03-15-05 02:48 PM) |
