Okay, so there's this corded optical mouse I have, a microsoft intellimouse explorer. I can't find a page which identifies it specifically, because there are different versions of the thing, some of which are just shaped differently, and some crazy ones, like the one google pulled up on microsoft's website that apparently has a four-way scroll wheel. Anyway, it probably doesn't matter. It doesn't work anymore. It lights up red, the computer identifies it as being there, it gets brighter for a second or so when I move it... it's always done these things. But no movement or button presses get through to the computer now. In the previous week it had been doing some weird stuff, like suddenly scooting off into the corner of the desktop and not moving till I lifted it up and placed it back down. I have no idea whether it's a hardware or a software problem, so that's why I'm asking here.

I'm running windows XP home edition SP1. The mouse has a USB plug which always used to go through an adapter and plug into the PS/2 port. When it stopped working I tried using the USB port instead, but it does the exact same thing.

Two questions - one, can I fix it? New drivers or something? If it's a hardware problem, I doubt I can do anything about it.
Two, is there any way to emulate the mouse using the keyboard, like On-Screen keyboard except the other way around? I couldn't find anything in accessories. I obviously wouldn't be able to do mouse-intensive things this way, like playing games, but I could do smaller things like move the mouse out of the center of the screen.

I think that's all. And yes, I have restarted my computer numerous times since the problem started.

EDIT: Oh, and I can acquire another mouse, but not immediately. That's why I'm wondering if I can move it in the interim.

Er.... I think there's not much you can do.... in fact, it sounds like you've done all the things I'd suggest, already.

You could always try drivers, but as far as I recall, the "drivers" for those mice were more like.. .fancy add-ons, and not needed.

Yeah, I just got a new mouse. If I could get it working again that would rule, because it's more comfortable and has more buttons, but I doubt that'll happen.

My guess is that either the chip that communicates with the PC went kaput, or there's a short in one of the data wires somewhere (probably the latter, considering how the problem previously fixed itself when you lifted the mouse off the desktop). The optical sensor still works, since the LED gets brighter when you move it, but if it's not even communicating button presses, it's definitely a goner.

My IntelliMouse Optical got old and started acting "jumpy," and I couldn't find an identical replacement anywhere. The closest model I found only has two buttons and a scroll wheel, and I need my Back/Forward buttons. I tried a wireless IntelliMouse Explorer, but the cursor movement felt really awkward for some reason. It seemed like it would take a split second for the cursor to start moving (probably a limitation of the wireless technology the mouse uses), and the cursor would generally "float around" a lot, which really threw me off. I'm now using a Logitech MX310, which is functionally identical to my original mouse, but the shape just isn't as nice.

Yeah, I know what you mean. The only match to my old mouse I found was the new intellimouse explorer, which has a weird tiltable scroll wheel for four-directional scrolling. I'm sure it's nice and all, but that puppy was like fifty bucks. I had to settle for a basic optical scroll mouse. I too am missing my back and forward buttons. ='(

...You don't need an optical mouse. I have a ghetto ass mouse that (with a little alcohol scrub once a month) performs better than any other I've ever owned. Hell, I picked it up for 2 bucks brand new at Zellers.

I beg to differ on the "you don't need an optical mouse" thing. It can depend what you do.

I do art on occasion with my mouse, and I find it damned near impossible to use a ball mouse cause I have to clean them out 3 + times during a piece of art work...

As for the IntelliMouse mice, I have one, and mine's jumpy. I think it's that my desk is too reflective though, because it stops jumping when I put a writing pad underneath it....

And yes, Logitech make good mice too. Comparable to the Microsoft ones, if not better, and more reasonably priced.

Accessibility tools somewhere in Windows allows you to set up the number pad as a virtual mouse. At least, it did in Windows 9x, but I never tried it in Windows XP.

Try the mouse on another computer, and if it doesn't work, definitely throw it away and buy a new one.

XP has that option, go to Control Panel -> Accessibility -> Mouse. It definitely sounds like a hardware problem if the USB port did the same thing.
