Pick the choice next to your personal habits concering backups
Crashes, defect hard drives, virus and other things can trash your MP3s, images, games, animes, whatever. How often do you save your precious files on media like another partition/hard drive, CD/DVD or other media ?

Computers and large hard drives often store personal and valuable data. May it be your MP3s, image files from your last holiday on the beach or the large document you are working for your final test in school or university, whatever, it is not always safe to rely on a hard drive and operating systems where already small changes can cause huge damage (damaging important .dlls in Windows or viruses, bad hard drives etc.) alone.

So it is important to back up everything.
So the preaching hour is finally finished.

How often do you do this?
If you want, tell me also in which way to you do that?
So, like if you save your files onto another partition using imaging programs like Norton Ghost or TrueImage using the entire partition(s). Or do you only copy your MP3s, images and save states onto a CD/DVD since you later anyway reinstall Windows after a full format of all yoir hard drives?

As for me, I save every download in two folders locally (one for archives like ZIP, RAR and one folder for installer, like setup.exe for programs), these are located within the local My Files folder. Every two weeks I copy all contents plus all my RPG Maker games onto a DVD. so whenever I need to format my drive, I simply reinstall Windows XP (using a home-brewn slipstreamed CD inclusing SP2 - legally with my original disk) and then install all my programs and have my stuff on that DVD.

I do this every two weeks and this costs maybe half an hour in Nero plus checking all files.

How about you?

I'm not that diligent as you are. However, large media files I do backup since it is almost impossible for me to find them again if I fail to lose them. I've never had an HD fail on me and because I seperate the OS from the rest of the computer, losing the operating system doesn't hurt me that much either.

Honestly, never on our current computer I backed up some stuff onto CDs on our old one, and I still have them now, but they're full of stuff I considered valuable then, and that I could care less about now Most of the stuff on this computer has been downloaded, so I figure if I ever have to format for some reason, I can go back to the sites I found the files at before, and get them again.

I may seem pretty lazy in that respect, but so far the only computer problems I've had were fixable with a System Restore. I suppose once I have a problem that isn't fixable except through formatting, I'll regret not backing files up, but for now, I don't see too much need to

I would backup them pretty often on an external HD if I had one.

I only have DVD discs and I wanna use them for other stuff.

Unless it's important (school work, mainly), I don't care about it (especially cracked software).

I never did a full backup and probably never will (if my computer decided to be a bitch, then so be it.)

I only did it once, I lost over 24000 MIDI files, houndreds of scanned pictures, 6 Games made with Game Maker (That I never released), over 600 WMA/MP3/Soundrack files, over 200 text/doc/xls files that I used to rule my life, and other files that I edited... Like my All New Units Addon for Dark Reign 2, maps for Age of Empires, and others CD Games (But I can install them again).

After that, I had to eat PROZAC for over 8 months... (Ok, so the reason of my mental illness is still unknown, lots of things happened, and I just have my split personality disorder to dealt with)...

I sorta did a backup once, I did transfer some files to the other computer so I had them on both. Just to be safe.

Althought I have been planning to burn my whole picture collection to DVD (no, not porn) so I won't lose it...

Vast majority of my backing up is done bi-annually really. Large amount of CDs go into it. That's the only real reason my comp survived the first hard drive kick.

Generally, about once or twice a year. I've been pretty lucky when it comes to hard drive fKitten Yiffers and viruses (only dealt with two viruses since ~1993, first one messed up my floppies, and the second one only affected my new computer, which was easily wiped/reinstalled), though I really need to change my habits. My brother and I plan to split the price of an external DVD burner soon, which should make things a lot easier.

My computer's a horribly slow piece of crap, so it takes forever to back up, so I usually only do so when reformatting (which is uncommon). I do back up source codes of my programs and my hacks regularly when I work on them though. Really, most of what I have can easily be re-downloaded.

Back..... up?

I understand the importance of backing up some of my data, and I do make sure I keep a backup of the stuff that's **really** important, but in general the vast majority of my hard drive(s) are not backed up and will not be backed up. In fact, if I lose things -- HOORAY -- I probably needed a fucken' clean up anyways.

I keep too much crap, and I have a hard time cleaning things out. Mass deletion of data would actually probably be a GOOD thing for me. The things I *really* need are backed up somewhere. The rest is crap that I horde for no good reason.

I only backup stuff when I'm about to reinstall XP and format C:\
I don't have another drive to backup on anyway. If i'd have a dvdburner I'd probably back up some stuff like anime, but mainly to clear space on the hd.

Most of the stuff that I put on my computer, like all the roms, I have to have on CD/floppy first anyway, since that one's not online. And most of the other stuff I have on that one I can easily get again... some SPCs, a few signatures and an animation I made (that I have on my geoshitties account)... so it doesn't bother me much.

Upon the exact moment of creation I backup a file, if I wanna keep it I make sure theres a copy on both of my hard drives. Im big on Fault Tolerance, most of what I backup is either anime or programs I dont have disks for.

I don't really like wasting time/effort on backing up stuff. I'll occasionally toss some one-of-a-kind items onto a CD but that's about it.

I need to make a few CDs soon though anyways...especially if I have a drive go out on me again or something. I dunno if the current CDs I have will be enough. Not like I can do disc to disc copying that well on this comp.
