I must be as vague as possible on thread title.

Apparently "Posted on..." for the post date isn't clear enough (or big enough) on each post. The FAQ doesn't mention it either. Might I recommend that this info be added, or "Posted on..." being made bold, italics, underline, hell, maybe even flash in bright annoying colors so it can't be missed.

OR....

Make a timer that auto-closes threads after a month of inactivity so this doesn't happen! 99% of people just make new threads anyway...

(This is now the second time I've suggested this... and I'm keeping track for ya. )

I think the reason most people miss the 'Posted on' text is, as you said, because of the size of it

It would likely be easy to make that bit underlined, bolded, or whatever else, and that would make it more noticeable.

I thought of this. If someone tries to post a new reply in a thread that's, say, more than a month old, they're first redirected to a page telling them that the thread is old, and thus they should only continue with posting a reply if they're contributing some new information to the thread. By new, I mean actual content, not something like asking where to get a hack patch, for example. Those things can, and should be taken care of through PMs.

That's just an idea I thought up while reading the first post in this thread, so don't think I'm trying to force you to accept it

Actually, I like your idea more... both would work though. =\ Hopefully something is done, although I won't bank on it.

Yeah... it could easily add in some obvious text above the reply box: "This is an old thread. Reply only if you have something significant to add to the discussion. If not, allow it to rest in peace."

Of course, it hasn't yet been decided whether thread-bumping is bad or not, but that's a good middling solution. (I am of the opinion that thread bumping is just fine, as irrelevant threads will just fall again... unless people keep responding "yarr it's a bump". The only exception is someone bumping a massive amount of old threads, as they can drown out the newer ones in large quantities.)

Can it be done so the new reply creates a whole new thread?

If the reply is that important, it may deserve a new topic to being discussed, because most people have forgotten of the old month thread and they may not want to read it again.

Probably not a good idea, as it will cause people who ignore the warnings to create extraneous threads saying "yeah" and such. The only time bumping is really a problem is when a user says something useless like that, and the same kind of people are more likely to be oblivious to warning text. It would happen, too.

The problem with that is that most new replies to old threads are just something like 'what happened to this?' or 'where can I get that?' sort of thing, and those could be taken care of more easily through PM's.

If the reply is really important, it's probably a better idea to bump up an old thread than start a new one, if you ask me
