Hey, what do you all know about nanotechnology? Like, is there any real news about it's usage outside of the lab yet, and has the USA lifted it's restrictions on the science yet? (edited by Atropos on 03-25-04 02:37 PM) |

By nanotechnology, do you mean the technology by which companies like Intel, AMD, and IBM make CPUs? Or how companies like nVidia and ATi make GPUs? I think that would be a self-explanitory answer

no, I mean nanotechnology as in the molecular-sized machines that scientists want to use for medical research and practices and other non-CPU uses

Yeah, nanotechonlogy can be used for alot of things. Small robots that are in the body and clears up it from dangerous viruses and repairs the body. Nanobot is basically very small robots, but nanotechnology probably also will become usefull for computers. Even if it isn't the same thing. Give 10-20 years and we may have the first medical nanobots. |

Oh, well if you're referring to that (Nanoengineering would be a better name... but I didn't come up with the names)... They're in beta stages anyway, and the government doesn't control it. It's not a coverup or conspiracy or top-secret. There may be some MILITARY uses that are classified though! |

I don't know much on it, but I read the book Prey by Michael Chriton, which deals with it. I didn't take in anything from it, as it was mostly gibberish to me, but it was an awesome read. |

I was under the influence that the USA had a great fear of this technology being misprogrammed in the incredibly unlikely chance that nanobots would multiply and consume the earth... again, incredibly unlikely, but when the USA is led by religion and fear that their thought of god may be shattered by reality, people get scared. But last I heard, nanoengineering was a science that had many restrictions put on it... such as "don't make it, just theorize about it on a computer because we don't want you to accidentally fuck up a loop command and send the world into destruction"... even though that'd never happen. Is it just me or has religion been playing a large role in state affairs lately? well... always I guess, but more so now that a religious zealot is in office. I'd like to see changes within my lifetime to improve global living standards, and the USA has the largest imaginary funds to do it (because the USA can go into debt as much as it wants because it's global standard and the "USA always pays off its debts"... eventually) I love the USA, but with all the power it yields, I wish it'd do something for the betterment of the world every now and again... at least we "won" the war. :/

It is true that every science holds a power that holds a terrible potential, although the chances of it happening yet are quite slim. With the advent of spyware, though, we're approaching George Orwell's vision of Big Brother in 1984 with chilling accuracy, albeit a bit later than plan. Privacy is the easiest human right that human beings find to breach, and information is power. Reason enough to get yourself a good firewall and ad-protection program, you're making a big investment in your system. |

So little robots are supposed to go cure deseases like the flu? Or bigger ones like aids, cancer, TBC? :O How would they do that?

By killing them of course. Nanobots are scary at the same time. There have been talk about transforming an object into another by the use of nanobots. But you would need thons of them to do that, at least if you want an fast job. Spyware is like everything else in our modern community, the stores are tracking on which stuff you buy and when, which age you are. And so on... That isn't so dangerous, but spyware on other hand just give you more mails/pop-ups about viagra, and how to get bigger "manhood" (my dad have got severeal mails about how to get bigger breasts XD). In Sweden there is an law which forces Swedish websites what their cookies does. I like that law, and I hope that other countries also have it... |

Yeah, but how would they kill them? Do they have something like anti-biotic tanks?

Nanobots could in theory replace our immune system. They'd be far more efficient, because they can fight infections straight away. Our immune systems rely on learning to combat an infection from contact with the foreign body. This is how immunisation works. They'd also be able to wage a battle on viruses that our immune systems cannot combat, like AIDS. However, our immune systems aren't all that useless against it, there is one man who is completely immune from AIDS. All I remember is that his surname is Fuchs, so try a googlesearch on that if you're curious |

Ok, I will. But another question: Wouldn't our immune system reject the nanobots and try to fight them off? |

The toughest part is getting them to be smart. They have motors, can do the other stuff, but they cannot give them enough "intelligence" to be able to do what they need to |

Hmm, I imagine that in a few years they'll be able to have small enough CPUs and we'll see Linux be ported to nanobots and such. Well, maybe not the Linux porting part but they'll have an OS.

Um, why would it have an OS? Nanobots don't need to multitask. Seek and destroy. That's all. It'd be programmed into the "CPU" or whatever you want to call it (There'd be 1 logic unit, probably no larger than a small protein, that would control all the functions). OS -> memory, and/or HD, etc.. Get real! |

We will all be controlled by Microsoft one day. We will all have nanobots with Windows NB installed on them. You will also have the option of purchasing Microsoft Word NB and the bots will read you textfiles that you download via Anal USB. Edit: So many mistakes.
