Skip all this first because I have a question, then read over it if you have any idea of an answer.

I've had two console-style game controllers for my Pc in my time. The first has busted now (the connections in the wire broke or something), but it was a Gravis Gamepad Pro. It was a Playstation-shaped thing, not the nicest shape, but it was fairly decent and compatible with most things, despite the horrible direction buttons (you know, the ones where it has a 'full 3D movement' thing that makes it virtually impossible to do, say, a Dragon Punch).

The next one I have is again decent but was incompatible with DOS (meaning I had to move to Zsnes for Windows with it's bizarre graphic glitches with sprites at the top of the screen), and also seems unable for me to use more than four buttons (meaning L and R are impossible to set). It's a Logic3 'Swift' pad or something like that and it looks more like a traditional Snes controller, but due to Windows not liking me setting it to 6 buttons for some reason, it screws up and goes weird.

And here's the question...

What game controllers for Pcs are commonly thought of to be the most effective and decent ones out there? There are so many. I want to get a relatively simple one, one with a PROPER direction pad, four normal buttons and two shoulder buttons. That can be set individually to whatever you want them to be set to, of course. Anything else is a bonus but not necessary.

Compatibility is important, although it doesn't have to work with DOS... And do any Pc pads allow USB connections? The pads I have use those huge connections and that's no good for laptops.

Anyway, thanks for letting me ramble, probably could of just said 'what Pc game pads are good' and get a similar response but then I couldn't be sure if it is actually what I'm lookin' for. Non-crappy direction buttons are important, aye.

Do you like any of the current console pads? Hell, do you like the SNES pad?
I'm a fan of the Xbox S-Pad, and have an adapter for it to connect to the PC USB port.
As it happens, there are adapters for pretty much every console controller is.

Have a look here and see what takes your fancy.

Which version are you using of Zsnes Windows? There was a newer one coming out recently, althought not being able to press severeal buttons at time limitation is there. :/ But Graphics glitches at the top? Are you sure it's just how the game works? A few games have bizarre graphics in the top or bottom line, but it's not shown on a TV, thought I have never noticed this with most games. That can't be a problem depending on which port your using.

And oh, most Gamepads is USB today. Unless you buy a old pad that uses the COM port. Besides it's usually on the package if it's USB. Personally I just say that most of them suck and you maybe would be better of with buying a GCN>USB or SNES>USB, console controllers are more expensive. But they're usually of a better quality.

Heres some more random info:

Gameport to USB
This lets you play with gamepads with the old gameport plug as USB adapter.

PSX-to-USB
If your into the playstation controllers, you can find PS2 to USB adapters at your local RadioShack. I was playing a super mario world hack with it a while ago and it works great.

Ebay Link: Propad Blue - I don't even think they sell this model anymore online.
If you have to have a PC controller with a GOOD directional pad and a good layout for fighting games, then I highly recommend the Propad Blue from Interact. It has 6 buttons on the layout similair to Street Fighter games, and two shoulder buttons, which are linked with button 5-6(I know that part sucks, but thats if you plan to use shoulder buttons.). This costs $9.99 when I bought it. I can execute fireballs/shoryukens on a dime.

Controllers that I would avoid are sidewinders. They look nice, but the directional pad is shitty for fighting games. They are good for everything else though.

I'd have to say the Gravis Eliminator GamePad Pro. Pretty much uses a PSX-like layout and it's lasted me a long time; the old Gravis GamePads always broke after a few months for me. I've had this for 3+ years and it keeps kicking.

Personally, I like the "Recoil" USB gamepad by Game Elements. The gimmick here is that the cable is on a spring-loaded retractable spool for easy storage. Can't say that's too useful unless you've got one of those newfangled computers with USB ports on the front, but still, it's actually a pretty good controller when compared to about 90% of the others out there.
It's clearly a PS2-style controller... The layout is the same and the buttons are even the right color. But unlike most PS2-style controllers, which fiddle with the shape and as a result are IN NO WAY COMFORTABLE, this one is actually shaped like a GameCube controller! It also has a D-Pad that WORKS, rather than one of those X-Box style things that are practically useless for 2d games. (or anything else, for that matter.)

It works in emulators, and costs about 15 dollars at Wal-Mart. If there's any reason you can't use an adapter for a real controller, then you should pick this one up instead. It's obvious that someone with half a brain worked on it.

Saitek P880.

Well, I have a Saitek P220...

It's basically the same thing, take out the red button, and change the button in the middle to some internal-light-flashy worthless thing.

Also, it lacks analog, so if you do 64 emulation, that may be bad...

Anyways, I like it, and I got it for ten dollars. The controller is a little long, but you'll get used to it fairly quickly.

It works in DOS, (Well, when I didn't have XP) and stuff.

Also, I have tried the Saitek P880, and it's awesome. More comfortable, and stuff. But I saw it for like, thirty bucks. >.>

I personally prefer a normal ole PSX controller with a PSX->USB converter. Both can be gotten for like $10 each and the PSX controller has enough buttons for most, if not all console emulation purposes.

I've got the same as DD thanks to the DDR pads and Stepmania. Works fine for me but I don't use it anyways because I tend to be a lot better with keyboard for some strange reason (probably because I've played with emus and keyboard for so long and it's the only thing I know).

I had just recently looked for a new gamepad

Currently I'm using a Thrustmaster Dual Analog 2 gamepad, which is actually really good, but if you were to get something of that type get the Dual Power 3.

http://ftp.thrustmaster.com/pictures/PCMAC/FS_dpg/Firestorm%20Dual%20Power.jpg

This is the dual power gamepad. This is PC only, but uses a similar mapping to PS2, This gamepad has 4 face buttons, 4 shoulder buttons, two analog stick buttons, and two back triggers, I tend to map the start and select buttons to those, and it works VERY well. It is a very comfortable gamepad, and has a rubber grip. The force feedback is great and works even on PSX and N64 emulators. Almost every game supports it.

However getting the mapping software is a bit of a pain. It is the only downside to the gamepad. Some games don't map well to this gamepad, one of them being "Beyond Good and Evil" the PC version never had a gamepad configuration, and when using the Thrustmapper, you have a problem getting your character to move in any diagonal directions. Another game that gave me problems was Alice.

-------------

Now for a new gamepad. Imagine what would have happened if someone put X-Box Triggers on a PS2 pad. You would get the Thrustmaster Dual Trigger.

This gamepad is designed for the PS2 and PC. It can plug into both consoles.

http://hardware.gamespot.com/site/screenshot.php?pid=15141&story_id=1347&imgnum=1&use_gs_path=

This is the Dual Trigger, as you can see, it is a PS2 gamepad only with the two extra triggers that you can map to anything, also it features turbo (only on the wire controller). I haven't tried it yet due to my lack of money at the moment, but it has gotten high reviews by every place I've checked. This gamepad only has one downside, it seems that everything is cramped together and is at times uncomfortable at first. But after a while you get used to it.

--------------

Personally I don't like the Saitek gamepads at all. probably cause most gamepads I am looking for don't have 4 shoulders like a PSX/PS2. This is important for me personally. However most of their gamepads have a 6 face button layout, which is good for Genesis and Saturn games.
You can make it work for PSX and PS2 emulation, it just isn't recommended.
--------------

I also didn't like the Microsoft gamepads as they didn't have the triggers or the analog.

--------------

My problem with Gravis gamepads is their price and their common layout which is no analog and 6 button layout.

Hmm. Maybe I should look for a Dual Trigger one but I think it looks pretty clumsy.

I hope 4 buttons are enough for most games in case I

I've only ever had one really good controller. It was a Thrustmaster, with 4 standard buttons, and 4 shoulder buttons. The downside to this controller was that it didn't have a start and select button, but I just set them to L2 for select and R2 for start. I was only using it for SNES so it didn't really matter. It was almost better to have them up there anyway. It had the BEST D-pad I've ever had though. Street Fighter games were no trouble at all. Sadly, that controller is long gone, and I'm stuck with a PS1 layout controller with the worst D-pad. Diagonals are impossible to do, so I'm forced to use the analog stick.

I miss having a good D-pad

I found a great controler a while ago at Best Buy. (Infact I'm holding it between my toes now as I type.)

I was going to get a cheap SNES style contoler for $15, but then I saw this one for under 10 so I got it.

It's just like a dual shock, with blue clear plastic case (feels sturdy too) and turbo setting keys (which I just noticed.) It has a circle with GF in the center as a logo and www.gamersfactory.com on the back label. It also has the best feeling d-pad I've ever used. I've not had a problem with it.

The first picture I found was http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5172805504&category=3677#ebayphotohosting
