Did what I did last time. Downloaded OmniSecure, and got MySQL 4.1 from the MySQL homepage. Installed both.

Put in PHPmyAdmin.

"Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (Using password: NO)"

Oops, forgot the password.

Now I get:

MySQL said:
#1251 - Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client

Problem is, I've tried getting 5.0 too; neither works, and I need this so I can do some work. Arrghghghgh.

Actually doing the exact opposite of what that said (downgrading to MySQL 3.23) fixed it, but I'm sure that was the same problem.

Oh well, I like the old one better, heh

You can just get XAMPP and the installation is automatic. It doesn't bother to set up passwords automatically, since anyone could find out the defaults anyway... but there's a script with it to set your own passwords and things so it will be secure.
