Well I couldn't sleep so I decided to install it this morning. Everything appeared to be going fine, and I rebooted. I couldn't help but notice a few changes, though. Something about it just irks me... Maybe it's the changed bootup screen, or the removed copyright date, or the BSOD when I start up...  The error code is PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA - STOP 0x00000050 (0xC2D40000, 0x00000001, 0x804DA1AD, 0x00000000). I've searched Google and Microsoft's site, the closest I can find is a problem related to some BootSkin program which I've never heard of. I haven't hacked any system files, changed the boot screen, hell I'm still using the default colour scheme and desktop. I just re-installed a while ago and all I've done since then is install various programs (including the latest version of IE6, since it refuses to work right without it and the files on the install CD are messed up) and download a few gigs of anim |

| It might be a driver conflict or incompatibility with SP2. Did you already try to reinstall your video card or chipset drivers ? Be sure to take the right one, since a wrong driver can mess up the system fatally. Also you could test your RAM. Sometimes BSoD can be caused by damaged RAM, try Memtest86 and run it for a few hours, if you still can access the Safe Mode without freezing the computer. Why SP2 should make a difference here, I dunno know. But since you already had some problems with your machine, it won't be that bad to try to find all possible 'sources of doom'  Although that's no true solution, it is hard to locate the problem. You said, you installed a bunch of programs. It also might be another hardware conflict with parts of your machine and updated system files or something similar. I would recommend you to format _everything_, somehow to back up your anime etc., keeping all your neccessary drivers for chipset, video card and others ready, along with a fresh setup.exe of an up-to-date firewall plus antivirus which you install later on. I even would recommend to create a slipstreamed CD with SP2 already included, since I applied my SP2 on a fresh copy of XP (immediately after installation of the system and missing drivers I put on that Service Pack offline from a CD and never had any problems with it then) and might have better ways to work for you, if you install all programs _after_ SP2. Uninstalling SP is shown in the "Software" entry in the Control Panel, but won't help that much. |

Bleh, I just did all that, except for the installing SP2 first part.  I Googled for a list of programs that had problems that I'd seen before, but all I can find is a list of programs that need to have firewall settings changed to connect to the Internet.  Also, how big is the file supposed to actually be? For me it was ~200MB, but I've heard everything from 80 to 800. |

| The size depends on what is needed for your computer, according to Microsoft. Mine was....well... I dunno since I my WinXP install CD has SP2. |

| The more you post, the more it seems that your computer setup is fucked rather than Microsoft issues. The "network install" (the entire service pack in one file, including SP1a and hotfixes before) file is around 250MB. Search Google for the network install and the Microosft site should have the size stated there. Are you sure that your WinXP CD already has SP2? Tell me the size of all the files on the disc and I'll tell you weather it's the original, SP1a, or SP2. This is asuming that it is not an OEM disc, which are often modified to install junk. |

Ran it for about 24 hours (busy today  ) off a CD, no errors showed up. (I would think there would be a lot more severe problems if that was the case. It worked fine except for a lot of little things before.)Bleh, I'm just gonna do system restore until I can figure out what's being messed up here.  [edit] Bah! Couldn't get into Safe Mode, surprise surprise. I re-installed (new record, 4 days from previous installation ) and it came up with some error about not finding a function in a DLL. (Doesn't sound good, seeing how it should have just copied a fresh version of it.) Everything else seemed to go fine, but now it's made everything like the crappy school computers! When I start up, it stays at the "Windows is starting up" screen for several minutes with no disk activity, before finally bringing up a login box. (Where on Earth it got the idea that I wanted that, seeing as how I never used it before, set up everything the same way, and only have one account, is beyond me.  ) Also, as it usually does, AVG broke when I re-installed so I had to re-install it too. During the installation, a 'Windows Installer' box came up that just said 'Preparing to install' with nothing but a setup icon and a cancel button. I cancelled it and another one popped up when AVG was done installing. (This is exactly what the school computers do, but we traced the problem to being related to MS Office, which I've never had anywhere near this computer. ) So how do I get rid of that login box and get it back to starting up as fast as before?Also, since I had to re-install IE... | Bah, it wouldn't be so bad if it didn't change all my file associations to use WMP again. It takes forever to change them all back, and WMP won't even play anything I actually watch at full speed. Damn M$... [edit] I found out what triggers that Windows Installer box. It pops up when I click menu options in that Window Menu program I released a while ago. The program still works fine, though.
