Yeah, but this isn't exactly what I'd call "reliable" .

You know what you just did? You took my dreams, all of them, you took all my dreams and put them in a big pile... and then you peed on them. That's what you did.

Well, I decided to sign up, and then noticed (My brain isn't working right now, so sue me) that they required your phone number/address/Social Security Number (and no, I don't have mine)

Knowing how my mom is, her letting me give that away (even to a well-known company such as this) is pretty much impossible, but I'll see if I can get a friend of my mom to talk her into it. There's one that already seems easy enough to do, but of course I can't do it now... argh.

Though I still have a job I'm getting paid to do (if I finish it ) for my cousin, so I should finish that

I disagree somewhat.

Actually, what I meant to say is, ONLY supply a list of sites you've worked on or a portfolio if they ask for it, or propose to show them, but don't just outright say "Hi, I did this, this this and this, now hire me."

A lot of people on RAC post canned bids with a little personal part about the project in question. This is good if you have like 50 ratings and the buyer is looking for someone with enormous experience... but if you're a newbie on there, posting canned messages or listing the stuff you've worked on will usually turn the buyer away.

I've talked a lot with buyers, they don't want to see what you've done, they want to see that you can do the job. Of course I'm talking about programming here. If you can make them confident that you know what you're talking about, that you know how to implement each point of the specifications, you'll get the job much more easily than someone who goes "Hi, I did this, this and that, and I can do your project for this price, now hire me"

Super FKitten Yiffer Man: You can start working and earning money without the SSN, they just won't send you money, as soon as you get it you can enter it and you'll get paid the next pay period... just depends on how confident you are that you can obtain it

~~~~~
Windwaker: Well, my first job was a small script that sends out emails by fetching addresses from a list...
Here's the text of the bid, heh:
"Very easy stuff, will do it in one hour."
I bid $4 on it, and then the guy asked for an addition and gave me a $5 bonus...
But it took at least 15 before it worked...
Show me your bids, I'll help you out
<3 kiwi
Here's a sample of my bidding style :|.
Hello,
I just completed a few other projects for people in my business area that are quite similiar for what you need.
Learning the code wouldn't present much trouble, I'm sure, and not too much time either.
Overall, this project would only require that I learn the code, then apply what I've learned to extract where the information/text is stored.
Best Regards,
Drew Blaisdell
Bid is ended.
Never heard back from the guy . The bid was only like $4.
Well it sounds to me like you're basically saying you know nothing about the code/language in question. That doesn't really sound good.
Nono, I meant, learning the code that they've presented me with to edit.
I guess I'll have to fix that :\.
windwaker: Perhaps "Study" would"ve been better than "Learn". "Learn the code" doesn't sound quite right.
Yeah, I actually just noticed that.
Oh, and some guy started a buy job solely to have the coder who he chooses get positive feedback =D.
Yup, open to everyone around the world ; paypal, cheques, western union...
You can't really get to the big jobs without doing the shitty jobs first, but you have a lot of experience, so I'm sure you'll be able to make some nice money on that site!
And windwaker, yeah, saying you'll learn the code isn't a good idea, you need to show that you know how to do the job, and you need to explain how fast, and how you'll do it.
Yeh, I'll to something else next time.
Weell, looks like I've almost got my first job . It's to add RSS feeds to this site, not a terribly difficult task. I'm one of two bidders, and the guy basically said he'll choose me.
$115 .
I just checked around the projects list, there's some pretty decently paid projects between them; $5000 USD and above, just wow... I admit I never earned a payment that high in my freelance 'carreer'; but a lot of low payments as well; $100 or less for a CMS script, and so fort. Of course, the -15% for RentACoder makes it even worse.
I don't know, I'm Dutch, and I know a lot of Dutch freelancer networks and advertisement websites where people looking for webdesigners/programmers advertise and webdesigners/programmer themselves advertise for themselves, without the actual website in concern 'interfering' with the actual payment. Don't know about any English/American websites of this type.
Though, I'm currently getting most of my references from websites/projects I made in the past. On every website I make I put a mini-logo and I put my name and website in the META tags.
And anyway, windwaker, about your bidding style: like others said, it's not a good idea at all to be telling the client in question that you'll study the code, meaning you don't even know what you're up to basically. Only apply to the projects for which you're fully aware that your capable of doing so without any problems, it takes experience, so keep it to lesser projects at first.
Furthermore, that goes for anyone, don't be afraid to place a rediculously high bid sometimes, really, you'll be 'lucky' a lot. I asked € 700 for a simple discussion forum and € 800 for an advertisement website (like the ones I mentioned above) which is actually a lot of money, but the majority of other webdesign/scripting companies asks over € 1000 for it, so it's fair.
I was fully capable of writing what they wanted , I guess people just wanted an word less shakey between "code already written" and "programming language".
Edit: I got a job . $42 for a gaming website, this'll be SIM-PLE. The design he wants is really basic, too.
So, how's everyone doing?
I've made $462.24 so far... Pretty much stalled right now with a client who takes forever to decide things hmm... But well, I'll eventually get paid extra, so it's not that bad
Is canceling common? I had all three bids going and all three buyers canceled. I should do what windwaker suggested earlier and lay down hella bids, but I'm worried about being overwhelmed. I have no idea how lenient most of the people are when it comes to scheduling problems and such. And then there's the large quantity of doable-sounding but extremely vague projects...
And before anyone says anything, this is a perfectly acceptable bump.
I haven't actually done anything on Rent-A-Coder, yet. But I did make $10,000 USD last week with my own freelance endeavor. That make exactly $19,000 USD earned from my freelance work, to date. I guess I don't have much interest in Rent-A-Coder, after all.
