OK, I need a bit of advice. What is the best spyware remover that I can get FOR FREE. Not some scan now bullshit and pay 40.00 to get it removed, like I did with the last 3 I tried. Also note, I tried spyware s+d latest, and ad-aware's latest, along with spysweeper. |

You'll probably find the best results come from running both Ad-Aware and Spybot, along with a good virus scanner. That pretty much gives you the best possible protection. | |||

What everybody else's said, really. If you have trouble, try using Hijack This! as well to identify the problem. Most spyware removers have trouble with "CoolWebSearch" (which changes itself regularly to avoid removal) so if you have that, there are special removal tools on the web. It sounds like someone was using your computer while you were gone. That was probably obvious though Do install and use Ad-Aware and Spybot, as Colleen suggested. That should eliminate most of the stuff. It also wouldn't hurt to try that CWShredder that Xkeeper posted a link to. Also, it wouldn't hurt to check if any new programs have been installed on your computer since you were gone (just run a search with the from / to date fields filled in). A couple times, I've installed a program that i wanted on my computer, and it put those sorts of icons on my desktop, and in the program folder (mostly Casino ones, actually ) I also use this program (SpywareBlaster), but it's more for protection against this sort of stuff, than for removing it, so you may not be interested in it. There's also Giant AntiSpyware. I know it's free for something like an 11 day period, and I'm pretty sure it'll allow you to remove stuff and all that while you're within the trial time limit. My entire family went on vacation, so unless someone broke in and installed some crap...that's out bolded for emphasis...I already used ad-aware's latest, spybot's latest, CWShredder, hijack this, and about 4 other programs. |

Post your full HiJackThis! logfile in here. Maybe someone knows something about that or certain entries. And as for removal instructions, did you try to run Spybot, Ad-Aware and your antivirus in safe mode instead of normal one ? That might give you better chances, since some malicous programs might not be loaded along like some system drivers disabled in safe mode. If you got an Ago- or Phatbot, it's even harder, since they are a combination of worm, trojan and virus parts. Removing these is hard, so if you got several trojans, I recommend to back up all your important files, killing all partitions by formatting tham, then installing Windows XP from scratch on, following the most common security advices (such as updating the OS, never going without a firewall into the Internet, avoiding IE etc.). As for Service Pack 2, if not installed, install it - or if you have a fast connection, download it and make your own slipstreamed Win XP SP2 CD. It is easy enough, I made my own one in a few minutes plus a little time for the burning process. As for that, I recommend to extract the Windows-CD's boot image file (Microsoft Corporation.img), since I lost 2 empty CDs with downloaded .bins - not bootable, thus useless ... until today when I "discovered" I needed my own CD's image file. |
