I broke down a few hours ago. I was bashing myself for something that was my fault between me and my bf. Also, the fact that I don't know what to do with my life. Like find a job or go to school yet. I cried for an hour and had thoughts about hurting myself like cutting, which I never did of course. That caused me to think of this "Death is a state of happiness that lasts forever." My bf made me promise not to hurt myself otherwise it will screw up our relationship, which I don't want to happen. I'm usually a happy person that hardly thinks like this.

I didn't know you were a girl.

You have your whole life ahead of you. I don't know how old you are so I can't give specific advice. If you are under 20 your future shouldnt freak or stress you out that bad. You have time to figure it out. If you are over 20, then you SHOULDNT freak out. Just because you are unsure of your goals in life doesnt mean you should make your life shorter.

Hehe, yeah I'm a girl. Plus, seeing as my parents are disabled and our food stamps have dropped dramatically cuz I didn't go through this program at the Job Center. Seeing as I'm an 18 graduate and my mom is the only one getting SSI.

Well, there are organizations for people like us. Red Cross and other things that help us out. I had to get past my pride before I would accept food from strangers wanting to help, but we needed it, so I did. Try to find out about stuff like that in your area.

Also, think about getting a job. You are 18, it doesnt have to be a life time career. Go flip patties at McDonalds. Its better than nothing.

Ahhh, yes I've heard about some of your problems before...

Emotional stress and thinking does things to you. I know about the thinking part personally. Really not much I can say, except, NEVER HURT YOURSELF!!! Seriously a permanent solution to a temporary problem will never work. Things will get better if you try to improve the situation. If you do nothing, nothing will happen. If you want to help your family, you may need to make personal sacrifices though, get a job and help pay for your home.

Really though, take a day to just relax and think of something you would like to do for your life, something that you have a passion for and just go after it.

Again though, don't hurt yourself...

Blah! No my mom worked at Burger King and McDonalds before she couldn't work anymore. So, I know not to work at any fast food restaurants. I did apply to one place and that's at Family Video. But no word yet.

Dracoon: Yeah I know not to hurt myself. I've told others that I know not to do that to themselves. Also, for some reason I want to break down and cry again.

I'm usually pretty upbeat in my outlook. But I remember when I was about 18 I had some problems with some of my relationships with my friends, it felt like a very, very dark time. I would get off work and just sit and stare at a wall for hours because I just couldn't think of what to do... If you've had a spat with your bf, two things can heal that: time and apologies. But apologies are far more effective, even if you have to hurt your own pride. And as far as job opportunities go, just keep looking. Opportunity strikes eventually. Dark times pass sooner or later, you just have to be patient. I know that it's harder when you're emotionally upset.

P.S.: I've worked at Burger King as a cashier. It was an easy job, and it was also not a bad job. Any other job there though...

If there's any job I'd recommend not to get, it'd be telemarketing. For one, over time you feel worse and worse about what you do. Second, you'll meet weird people who actually need that kind of money to survive (drug addicts) but they might not tell you that until they're already your friends and all of a sudden begin to ruin your life by stealing from you. Also, any place that hires you in under 30 minutes from when you show up to apply is fishy. Telemarketers, pyramid schemes, and other quasi businesses do stuff of this sort, because all they need is a warm body to do the job.

Yeah I've already apologized to my bf over the spat. Also, I'm like you with the upbeat outlook, MathOnNapkins. As for my friends I get along with them quite well even though I barely see them anymore. Plus, that one time me and my best friend had a strong conversation which caused me to break down into only crying at the time. That had to be about five or so years ago or something like that. We stayed friends after that and we had ice cream afterwards.

Yessir. Hard times can really do some crazy things to you.

For your job/school conflict, you may want to do like Kario said - start small. You're still young (I'm younger), so just familiarize yourself with the working world. Try to take advantage of your talents too if you choose to find a job.

Ehh, don't worry at all! I am 23 and I still have no clue what to do with myself.
But I completely understand the food and money situation. Right now me and my boyfriend get food stamps(which they are trying to take away!). And money is very tight. But, things get better, I promise.
But hey, don't stress over the whole future thing either. You have plenty of time to figure out what you want to do. Hell I remember my mom being about 35 and registering for college. Which she completed in about 2 years. So don't worry. It's not the end of the world. Things do get better!

It's simple then, their wrong. You don't have to choose what you want to be because they say it is time. It takes a lot of time to find out what you want to be, I'll probably be 20 or so when I find out what I want to be.

Yeah seeing as I'll have my whole life ahead to work for chump change it's like. Unless I manage to get into a really good job that pays well but that's just wishful thinking.

Um, jw, do you use the computers at the library? Because if you are need food stamps, I really would not recommend wasting money on a non-essential item like a PC. I have plenty of friends in similar financial situations as you have described. Luckily, they still have a place to live and are still in high school.

Anyway, I work at a McD's, but in the grill. It does suck, but I have been able to get raises rather quickly.

First piece of advice: Apply to WAY more than one store. I mean, its way better to have to deal with having multiple jobs to choose from if you get offers than to put your faith in one and end up emptyhanded. I used to put my faith in 2 or 3, but then I decided to go out to every place in the area. I got lucky. It's hard finding a job in modern America, for sure. So that's why it's good to go everywhere possible.

2nd advice: After you have enough money from job, attend a community college if you wish to remain living where you are right now.

3rd advice: Don't hurt yourself. I've done it. Not smart.

4th advice: Don't become a prostitute either. One of my former best friends did that because of her financial hardships, and I'm sure if I was still talking to her today, I would find that she highly regrets it.

5th advice: Don't overwhelm yourself. You have time. You're smart. You have abilities. With that, you can be at many different places in the future.

Guess that's all I have for now. Good luck. And I didn't know you were a chick either.

Oh yea, one more thing. Use birth control. Like, the pill if possible. Known plenty of people get in trouble for lack of that as well.

I wish I had seen this sooner, but I didn't. Anyways, what you just said is horrible to think. Never think like that. If you want something, as long as you make the effort, you'll get it. If you want a high paying job, find out which one you want, hell plummers can make a lot of money, and they don't need very much education/a 4 year college degree. Just don't give up, because if you do, then you have really lost.

Yeah well, you gotta find the good things in life, like you said you got a BF, some one to be there for ya and make ya feel better (at least I hope he does that) honestly if you didn't have him, and you couldn't find anything else good in your life then you have every right to be depressed or what ever, but as long as you got that one thing that makes you feel better, then don't be so miserable. All I got in my life is my work, I got people down at my work that are probably the best thing that ever happened to me.
