Well, it finally happened. I got a new 250GB hard drive, w00t! (Now let's hope Western Digital makes better hardware then they do software. Their install CD said I had no CD drive. After installing the files onto TWELVE FLOPPY DISKS, because floppy disks SUCK (yes, 11 of them failed) and my disk drive isn't much better, I got into the setup. Since my stupid BIOS has that 137GB limitation, the setup program was supposed to set up a workaround, but wouldn't because it said WinXP without SP1 doesn't support it. I ended up having to tell it I did have SP1 - even though I was about to re-install from scratch - so that it would allow me to create two 125GB partitions which could have been done without SP1 anyway. )
(Long story short, I now have my old 15GB drive, and one 250GB drive split into 125GB partitions.)

Now, it seems to work, but there are of course some (luckily small) problems:

1) The lettering. My old drive is C:, the new ones are D: and E:, and the CD-ROM is F:. I want the new ones to be C: and E:, the old one to be F:, and the CD-ROM to be D:. (This installation of Windows is running from D:, and another installation is on C:.)

2) When I boot up, it gives me the option to boot 'Windows XP Professional' (this one) or 'Windows XP Professional' (the old one - yes, they both have the exact same name ). I assume this will go away when I format the old drive? (I also notice my Linux bootloader has been wiped out, making it impossible to boot Linux. Ohh, if I wasn't planning to wipe that out anyway, I'd be SO pissed. )

3) If I get SP1, is there a way to merge the two partitions into one 250GB one without wiping them? Will my BIOS (which reports the drive as 137GB) go nuts?

4) Windows reports the partitions as 116GB, with a capacity of 125,411,295,232 bytes. (They're not the same size, but close. The program only let me set sizes as a percentage of the capacity. ) I assume this is because it's using 1000 bytes/KB instead of 1024? Is there any way to change that?

Okay, you're running XP, it's easy to change the drive lettering.

Right mouse click on "My Computer" on the Desktop. Go to Manage. On the Left hand side of the window that comes up, click "Disk Management". Right mouse click on the drives you want to reletter.. and "Change Drive Letter and Paths".

If you want to merge partitions, Partition Magic will allow you to do it.

Not sure about the boot one, mine does that too on a fresh install with no partitions... weird

Definitely possible. I can't recall offhand, but it should be in what I think is called the storage manager, basically where you format extra disks in XP (except for the one currently running, for obvious reasons). (Right-click My Computer, pick Manage, and drill down to the items handling storage and disks in the tree view.) [Edit: Follow the instructions in the post above. Much better.]

It may or may not go away as the Windows bootloader (which, as you saw, promptly got your, ahem, other bootloader out the door) keeps a file called (I think) boot.ini with those entries; however I don't know if it checks if those items for availability, i.e. if the partitions are still there. (Probably not because it may need to know different file systems to be able to figure that out, but who knows.)

I know that vanilla Windows XP limits the HD size, but the BIOS? If it reported the size 137GB before you partitioned it, it's incompatible, otherwise it's probably just reading the size of the first partition. I'd recommend upgrading the BIOS in any case because it sounds like the whole thing's old. Merging is sort of possible using other tools, but not with something that comes with Windows or the HD, no. [Edit: Post above says "Partition Magic", which was exactly the name I was looking for.] And for the love of god, unless you have something that ABSOLUTELY WON'T RUN, upgrade to SP2. Now.

The size of whole HDs traditionally are defined as 1000 bytes/Kilobyte because of the HD manufacturers' ability to fool the customer into thinking it's bigger than it is and getting away with it. When you say Kilobyte, you typically mean Kibibyte; "kibi" is the real term for the prefix dealing with powers of 2 (2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128 [..]) instead of multiples of 10 (10, 100, 1000 [..]). What's written on the box is unformatted capacity (without any filesystem partition tables) and in Kilobytes and not Kibibytes. I have 2x160GB (Gigabyte) HDs and I get around 300 Gibibytes of actual room for storage taking those factors into consideration.

Alright, thanks for the info on changing the letters, but it's not working how I'd hoped. The CD-ROM drive doesn't show up, and I can't change the drive Windoze is running from.

As far as SP2 goes, I do plan to get that. (In fact I think I might have installed it along with other updates without noticing. I don't recall a lot of these features. ) The reason I didn't have any service pack was that I hadn't even installed Windoze yet. (Well, there was the old installation, but I wanted to - and did - clean install on the new HD.)

The size limit, I'm pretty sure it is a BIOS problem (only supports 28-bit addressing) as it is reported as that size in the setup menu. I was going to buy an ATA controller but it would have cost a fortune, so I figured partitioning would work instead.

Also how the hex do I get the quick launch to use 16x16 icons instead of 32x32? I did it once...

Well, if Windows isn't letting you change the letters well... the only other thing I can suggest is a utility that comes with Partition Magic that allows you to switch around drive letters and stuff. I can't remember what it's called though, but it usually works.... I'm sure there are also others, but I know that one is bundled with Partition Magic.

Er, as for the Quick Launch thing, I don't know how the hex you got it to use 32x32

Me either. The old install was like that too.

...Well I'll be damned. The option shows up when the taskbar is unlocked.

I imagine PM can change the lettering, but won't that break a lot of file references?

You cannot change the drive letter of the partition Windows is installed on. The only possible means is to do a reinstall; I learnt that the hard way when I rebuilt a rig with a 8-in-1 card reader, making my Windows partition drive G:.

From a neowin.net forum post, a user states :
A few months ago, I created a registry tweak to set the QuickLaunch icon size to 24x24 instead of 32x32:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics\Shell Icon Size = 24

Well, poo. What if I switched the drives themselves? (It's not really important but I like to have my system files on C:, it's sort of a standard.)

Partition Magic's drive manager will go through and check all the drive mappings and references and fix those too on the first boot with the new drives.

I don't know if you can change the drive the OS is on with it or not though...

All the references? Like shortcuts, config files, registry entries etc? That'd be rather difficult to do.

Any idea how to un-install Visual Source Safe? Or at least make it not ask if I want to add every VB project I open?

It takes a while to change the references, but yeah, last I did it I had no problems at all.... course, I went and watched TV while it was actually *doing* it though, cause it took a while. Eh, it's at least something to look into. But like I said, I don't know if you can change the drive the OS is on with it or not though....

Well I'll check that out. Thanks.

Another little problem: I moved My Documents, because I hate the big long path name and some old programs don't work so well with it. Most of it worked fine, I renamed My Pictures and there were no problems. But with My Music, I had created a folder called Music before doing this, so Windows doesn't recognize that as the default folder for music. (It created one, which I deleted.) Can I fix that? (Like whenever something tries to access My Music it ends up there, just like it does with My Pictures which is now Images.)

Finally it'd be great if there's a way to hack MSPaint to save with lowercase extensions, or if anyone knows a good alternative that doesn't require .Net. (I might have to write one sometime. )

Right click in "Quick Launch" -> View -> Small Icons.

Yeah...

----------

Secondly, to get MSP to save with lowercase, just type in "filename.jpngif", always worked for me.

Yeah, I figured that out. The option wouldn't show up because I keep the taskbar locked (because it's ugly otherwise and can be accidentally moved/resized).

I know how to force MSPaint to save with lowercase extentions but it's annoying having to do that every time. I want it to be that way by default.

My friend has a computer with a single HDD with a single partition... E: ... No shit. If he puts in a USB key it appears as C: .

Why don't you just wipe it all? I mean, you can back up all your important files on the old HDD. Then put in your new on primary master, install Windows (duh) on a new primary partition on your new HDD, and manage partition letters in XP. How hard can it be?

Obviously that is the most straightforward solution, but not many people have that much free time to reinstall all their programs, especially if they've used the computer for well over a year.

Instead of making such a fuss about it, I would just live with the non-C: partition.
