Sorry, tried to get creative with the thread title.  Basically, my PS2 becomes crappier and crappier everyday. Sadly I have to wait another 2 years or so for the PS3 to finally come out so I can finally take my PS2 and slam it over my bathtub. Why? I want to play my games. But I can't when I get a disc read error 70% of the time I insert a game. Xenosaga hasn't worked at all for months, back when I first tried it I felt good about trying to go back into the game and finish it up, well PS2 slapped me in the face with that one. San Andreas takes a couple restarts to work right, freezes sometimes. Oh, here's the best part. Got a whole lot of money for Christmas and I was wanting to buy a good new RPG for the PS2, so I go with Growlanser Generations, and, both Grownlanser II and III don't work at all. Great isn't it? "FIx it lazy biatch!" It's my dads PS2. And he's not to keen to letting me do whatever I want with it, he won't even let me take it out of the house. So, it just seems like I'm going to have to save up some money and buy a new one. I have a couple of friends who have had this problem too. One of them has fixed it, but lately the problem came up again, so he's "fixed" it multiple times. Either I can get my dad to trust someone and have them fix it, or have myself attempt it, or ... guess I'll start saving my money up now. This is one of the major reasons why I'll usually favor the Xbox or Gamecube in discussions. |

One wonders how many times stores get burned with that trick.  It's a possibility though. Considering how well the PS2 is selling now and that it's after Christmas, it might be the best bet if you can find one. |

| My PS2 is getting read errors too at the moment. It refuses completely to read one of my games, and I can't tell if that's the game itself or the PS2 anymore. Most the time it's reliable, but when it's going through an unreliable patch, it's VERY unreliable. I'll have to replace mine too sometime.  It's done good though to survive for 2 years. |

I don't have a PS2, but our Gamecube went broken down only two weeks after we bought it. It couldn't read any game; the setup screen appeared everytime I turned it on. I will never forget how angry I was that day.  But at least, the shop took it and gave us a new one. |

| Apparently, this seems to be a common problem amongs PS2 consoles. I read somewhere that the newer PS2's dosen't have the same problems. But i'm not really sure since I don't own any. And well, someone did a durablity test. PS2 was the most fragile, X-box was durable and Gamecube was most durable. But todays consoles are more fragile than the older ones in average thought... I heard about Gamecube's getting DRE too, but not very often. Mine hadn't gotten any yet, and I really hope it won't get...  If this happened to my PS2, I probably would try to repair it myself. It could just be something simple as a dirty lens.  |

| My PS2 works perfectly. Two years. Still hasn't failed me. My gamecube doesn't read Animal Crossing correctly, but that's because my little sister treats the disc like an SNES cartridge. |

| I also heard that the earlier PS2's had glitches with DRE. I got mine a year after they came out and its never failed me. Some of my friends' PS2's have been messed up tho (and they got them when they first came out). Also I heard the PS2 works better flat down and not vertically...dont know if thats true tho. |

| I played Mario Kart on my GC with the system upside down. Worked fine. Had my trusty GC over two years, nothing has gone wrong with it, except for the fact every game I ever put in there, I become badass on it. | |||

| It's due to the disc tray the PS2 has. You'll notice that the disc isn't held firmly in place, but rather sets in the tray. That's fine... as long as the system isn't sideways, where the disc can tilt over, becoming closer to the laser than designed, burning the game. | |||

The only time things have gone wrong for me was when I kept opening the lid while the game was trying to load Wow. That's quite long for such a simple expanation As for the thread topic, the only thing I can think of that would cause that is a dirty lens It's too bad your Dad won't let you try to fix it, but you could try what was suggested in the second post.
