Originally posted by KarioWhat happened to "And on the seventh day, he rested", etc? If you people are going to follow a calendar based on a religion, at least have the decency to not fuck with it. From what I can see, the seventh day would be a holy day, which would conceivably be the day that people would go to church. Which is Sunday. Am I missing something here?Originally posted by JesperOriginally posted by HyperHackerBecause here in Sweden, all other things being equal, the seventh day is actually at the end of the seven day week. |

Yes you are. Saturday is the sabbath. The 7th day. Sunday is the day Jesus resurrected, thats why we go to church that day, it isn't the sabbath.

All of you are wrong. Sunday is the sabbath, and at some point the pope declared it a good idea to have the sabbath start the week. This being long before the separation of church and state, it was so, and it remains that way... In everywhere except Sweden

No. I am not going to go by something a common man says. God is the one that set up Sabbath and Jesus' resurrection, not some pope guy.

That's nice, but the sabbath was always on sunday, it's just that the week didn't really begin on sunday until the pope said that, so... Good luck convincing everyone that the week starts on monday :x

WTF Kario... I didn't say it starts on Monday, I'm just saying you got the thing wrong. The Sabath was never on Saturday, it was always on sunday, and the week started on monday until the pope declared the sabbath should start the week. If you're "not gonna go by what the pope says" then you should say the week starts on monday, not that the sabbath in on saturday. And either way, good luck convincing people of that.

OK, SUNday. God created the light on the first day. Light comes from the SUN, thats why it was named that. The rest of the days are latin and I don't want to go into all that. I am going to go by God, you can go by the pope.

Can I ask why you people are argueing about the order? Lots of places, like Spain, make their calendars like that because work/school is starts on Monday, and the layout was more logical. Personally, I like it better that way, no need to get your panties in a twist over it. By the way, you're wrong, Kario, about Sunday taking it's name from the Sun, it takes it's name Sunne, the Saxxon sun god. Monday is named for Mona, the Saxxon moon god. Tuesday comes from the Nordic god Tyr Wednesday comes from a variety of phrases Thursday comes from the Nordic god of thunder, Thor Firday comes from the Germanic goddess Frige Saturday comes from the Romkan god Saturn. Want proof? Check encyclopedias. The Gregorian calendar, which we use, is an improved version of the Julian calendar. Julius Ceasar made the Julian. Roman emperor so he spoke latin. I don't know latin, but in Spanish, the word for sun was sol and in latin based words, like solar in English, it's clear that Sunday doesn't take it's name from the Sun. As for the Gregorian, it was merely a bit of a rearrangement of the Julian, made by pope Gregory something or another, so It's got Christian history, but it isn't Christian. As for the sabbath bit, I'm not Christian, so I have no clue, but I was taught Sunday is the sabbath when I was little and forced to go to church. So the bottom line? It's rearranged because it makes more sense to people that way and Sunday doesn't take it's name from the Sun. As for the Jason and WTF bit, I'd never noticed either |

http://webexhibits.org/calendars/week.html#SECTION00650000000000000000 : "What Is the First Day of the Week? The Bible clearly makes the Sabbath the last day of the week, but does not share how that corresponds to our 7 day week. Yet through extra-biblical sources it is possible to determine that the Sabbath at the time of Christ corresponds to our current 'Saturday.' Therefore it is common Jewish and Christian practice to regard Sunday as the first day of the week (as is also evident from the Portuguese names for the week days). However, the fact that, for example, Russian uses the name "second" for Tuesday, indicates that some nations regard Monday as the first day. In international standard ISO-8601 the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has decreed that Monday shall be the first day of the week." So there seems to be differing opinions (in this thread at least) whether I was wrong or not to assume what I did in my last post, but at least it's pretty much official that internationally, the week starts on Monday. (Which, as Sabishii said, makes the most sense to the countries where work starts on a Monday, including - gasp - USA, Sweden and Spain. ) In return to any cranks upset about the US not following those standards, or that the US standards were not made the standard in place of these, I offer you this Abe Simpson quote: (edited by Jesper on 12-29-04 06:27 AM) |
