*** IMPORTANT ***
The information in this post is specific for the TwilightRO private server. It will NOT work with the pay-to-play servers run by Gravity, and generally won't work with other private servers.

New to the TwilightRO community, or RO in general? Not sure what to do? Fear not! I was once in the same boat as you! I asked questions, got answers, and even got a copy of the source to look at and mess with. I'm going to share my knowledge with you, and I encourage others to share their knowledge. You can also ask any questions you may have, and they will be added, along with the answers (as soon as they're given). Tips, tricks, etc., will also reside here.

Thanks!
Original Thanks go out to Sofie, Kiwibonga, Jizuko, and Colleen for answering my questions while I was playing. To Yarx & Emuz for the server. To Kwan for my Acmlmers Guild Title. To Sofie & Kiwi for hooking me up with equipment. And to Lord Rahl for the Poring Egg & Incubator.

Extended Thanks go out to the TwilightRO staff, for providing a fun, wonderful server to play on. To Yiffy Kitten for helping me learn the ways of the Lord Knight. To all my guildmates from the various guilds I belong to. To Valcion & Kwan for opening my eyes to the fact that there's no reason to put up with morons on forums. If I've missed anyone, I apoligoze.
Announcements/Updates
12/29/04 - Added the GM list.

12/28/2004 - Remade the guide. The old version was horribly out of date.

Make sure you always check the first page and first post of this thread to see what's new. I'll edit this section when something changes, telling you what it was.

Latest Version And Installation/Upgrade Info
TwilightRO Decemberween - I don't remember when I downloaded it, but I'm sure it was sometime between October 1st and November 30th.

You MUST have the TwilightRO client installed to play. TwilightRO will NOT work with any other client. Just modifying sclient.xml will no longer work.

If you're installing the client for the first time, simply unrar it into a directory of your choice. Once that's done, run noro.exe to patch the game to the latest version. You should run this patcher at least once a day. Personally, I run it every time I play.

If you're upgrading from a pervious version, unrar it to wherever your \twilightro directory is located. If you have the client installed to \newro or \notro, then you will need to do a "new" install. You can copy the contents of your skin, screen shot, guild emblem, and chat log directories to the \twilightro directory. If the client isn't installed to \twilightro, it tends to have problems. Installing it over the \notro or \newro versions and renaming the directory will not work. The files from those older versions aren't compatable with the latest version.

Answered Questions
Q: Where do I download the TwilightRO client?
A: I'm not sure if Emuz wants this information posted to the general public. For the moment, private message or IM someone who already plays, and ask them (nicely) for the URL for TwilightRO.

Once I know it's alright to post the link, I'll update this post and add it.

Q: Erm... how do I make a character?
A: First, you'll need to register an account. You do this online through the Control Panel. Once you've done that, run the game, and log in with that account. Click on an empty charcter slot to make your character.

Q: I installed the client, patched it, and registered an account. When I try to log in, it says that my account isn't vlaid. How do I validate my account?
A: Your account was validated when you created it. This message means that you need the latest tdata.grf file, which was released after the latest client update. You'll have to search the forums to find the link to download it, as I don't know it at the moment.

Q: What the crap? It's telling me that my name is already taken! I've tried tons of names, and they're all taken!
A: Actually, chances are the name is NOT taken. This is a bug with character creation. If you use one of the new hair colors, then this error pops up. Just make your character have the default hair color, then use the Stylist NPC in Prontera to change it. It's free, and has a much bigger selection of colors. You can also change the color of your outfit here.

Q: Help! I made my character, went to the NPC at the entrance to the Training Castle, and he's stuck! He asked me a question, but there's no way to answer it!
A: This is a bug that is still being hunted down. Every time it seems like it's been fixed, it pops up on a different NPC.

All you can do is hit [ESC] to bring up the quit menu, and choose to change characters. Then, the next time you talk to him, don't choose the option that led to you getting stuck. I haven't been to the Training Castle in forever, so I don't remember exactly how you get this bug to happen. Sorry.

Q: OK, I'm trying to delete my character, but it asks me for an e-mail address. What should I put?
A: I think that you now need to supply an e-mail address when you create an account, but I'm not sure, as I made mine before you had to use the CP to make one. If you had to enter an e-mail address, use the one you registered with. Otherwise, just use this: user@athena

Q: There are a lot of people to talk to in Izlude! Who should I talk to?
A: Everyone. Seriously. Every RPG in existance is that way. Of course, when you're just starting out, there are 3 important NPCs in Izlude, and they're all right by each other.

The dog will heal you, for free. There should be a dog in every town. Very handy.

The lady on the left, with the Blue Hair, is the Kafra representitive. You can use her to store up to 300 different items. She will also save your game for you. If you die, you will restart in the town you last saved in. There should be a Kafra rep in every town.

The lady on the right, with the brown hat is the Warp NPC. She will warp you, for free, to any town or dungeon. Easiest way to travel. There should be a Warp NPC in every town.

Q: Where should I go first?
A: Talk to the Warp NPC (see previous question), and choose Towns. Scroll down to Prontera, and click OK.

Welcome to Prontera! This seems to be the main town, where everyone comes to regroup, chat, trade, etc. Make friends here.

Q: Where should I level?
A: It depends, really, on what job you want. Eevryone has their favorite leveling spots. Some go to Ant Hell, and kill the Ant Eggs in the dungeon. Others go to Payon Dungeon, and kill things there. Still others go to the Culverts Dungeon, to the fields south of Prontera, and many other places.

Wherever you decide to level, when you kill a monster, don't forget to pick up the items it leaves behind.

Q: What do I do with the things I get from the monsters?
A: Sell them. Keep any food you get, along with any herbs, but sell the rest. It's the way you get money in RO.

Q: Should I sell weapons & armor too?
A: Yup. All the daggers I've picked up have always turned out to be knives once I've identified them, and the maces have all been clubs. You get more money if you sell them without identifying them. As for the armors, identify the first set of clothes you get. It should be a jacket, which you can equip to increase your defense. Just sell the rest.

Q: How do I identify items?
A: Buy the Magnifier. All Tool Dealers sell them, and there should be a Tool Dealer NPC in every town.

You will have to look at the item in your inventory to find out what it actually is. Also, every time you identify an item, it uses up 1 Magnifier. Don't forget that you can right-click on an item's icon to get a description of it.

Q: "I'm a 32/22 Swordsman!" "Yeah? Well I'm a 45/30 Mage!" WTF?! Why are there two numbers given when someone is talking about level?
A: There are two levels for each character.

The first number is the Base Level. This is the number before the slash, like the 32 or 45 in the example in the question. This is the level that increases your stats. You have to spend Stat Points to get anything out of rasing the Base Level, however. You can do this on the Status menu (ALT+A).

The second number is the Job Level. This is the number after the slash, like the 22 or 30 in the example in the question. This is the level that increases your skills. You have to spend Skill Points to get anything out of rasing the Job Level, however. You can do this on the Skill menu (ALT+S).

In order to change from a Novice into your first Job, you need to have a Job Level of 10, and you need to spend all 9 of your skill points. To change into your second Job, you need to have a Job Level of at least 40. To rebirth, you need to have a Base Level of at least 99, and a Job Level of at least 50. To change from Novice Advance to your Advance 1st job, you again need to have a job level of 10. To change into your Advance 2nd job, you MUST have a Job Level of 50.

Changing jobs does not cost anything, unless you change from your original job to a different job while going through the Rebirth process. Then there's a penalty and a fee. For example, if you were a Wizard, and decided you wanted to become a Paladin, you'd be penalized. If you stuck to the High Wizard path, then there's no penalty or fee.

For the penalty, you lose 9 Skill Points, 56 Stat Points, and you pay a fee of 1,000,000 z. That's one million zeny.

Q: How does the Guild I'm in level up?
A: By fighting. Every time you get XP from fighting, a certain percent goes to the Guild. This percent is called Tax, and it is set by the Guildmaster. It can be adjusted from 0% to 50% for each member of the Guild. This means that the Guildmaster could set things up so that 5% of all XP earned by Guildsman A goes to the Guild's level, while 50% of all XP earned by Guildsman B goes to the Guild's level. 0% is the minimum tax, 50% is the maximum, and 5% is the default.

When the Guild gets enough XP, it levels up.

Q: How can I check on the level of the Guild I'm in?
A: Use ALT+G to open the Guild Info window. It has TONS of info about the Guild you're in.

Q: What are the various keystroke commands/hotkeys?
A: Here's the list as I know it:

ALT+END: Turns HP/SP Bar On or Off. On by default. It is recommended that you always leave this on.
ALT+HOME: Turns Ground Cursor On or Off
INS: Makes you sit or stand.
ALT+[=]: Fix the interval error between letters.
F10: To arrange Chat Window
ALT+F10: Chat Window On Off
ALT+G: View Guild Info
ALT+H: Open Whispering List
ALT+Z: Open Party Menu

Q: How do I make my own Guild?
A: From Kwan: Get the rare Emperium. Theres around 1/10000 chance of getting it from Orc Zombies, and they are pretty easy to kill.

Once you have it, type /guild GUILDNAME to make your guild.

If you want spaces in your guild's name, type /guild "my guildname"

Q: Grrr! My Poring only eats Apple Juice, and I have none left! How do I get more? (From Elric)
A: There is rumored to be a town that sells Apple Juice, but nobody seems to know what town it is.

From Kwan: The town is Amatsu.

Q: How do I get into a Guild?
A: You can ask someone if you can join their Guild. Generally, only the Guildmaster can add you to thier Guild, so you may have to wait until that person is on. However, the Guildmaster can give other members the ability to invite people into the Guild.

Each guild generally has its own set of rules & requirements for joining. The guildmaster will inform you of their rules and requirements.

Q: So I can only one character per account? All the same sex? (From Renidragon)
A: As of right now, you can have up to 5 characters per account, but you can only play one at a time. All 5 characters you make will be male or female, depending on what gender you chose when you created your account.

At one point, Yarx made a modification allowing each account to have up to 10 characters total, with 5 active. You were able to swap active & inactive characters via the Control Panel. With the move to eAthena RC5, that modification was lost. Yarx hasn't redone it yet, as World of Warcraft has consumed his soul. Poor thing. xD

Q: So my character name isn't the same as my account name either? Can you have all 5 named the same thing? How's that work, though? Seems like people would be able to steal your name. ...unless it's tied to your account, I guess? (From Renidragon)
A: There can only be one of each name. If you try to make an account with a name that's already been used, for example Elric, it will tell you the name is taken. The same goes for making a new character.

Q: Do any classes have trouble soloing if they want? (From Renidragon)
A: It all depends on the stat build and gear you use. I tend to solo, and not including the Rebirth jobs, I think I've played at least half of them.

Q: OK, what's this Rebirth thing you keep mentioning?
A: It's a way to make your character even more powerful. Your character is rebirthed, and becomes a 1/1 Novice Advance with 100 Stat Points to spend. It will take you twice the XP to level up, but it's worth it. You get more HP and SP, more skills, and a new sprite for your character.

Q: Cool. What are the Rebirth Jobs?
A: Here's the list, in this format: Novice - 1st Job - 2nd Job - Novice High - Advance 1st - Advance 2nd:

Novice - Swordman - Knight - Novice High - Swordman High - Lord Knight
Novice - Swordman - Crusader - Novice High - Swordman High - Paladin
Novice - Merchant - Blacksmith - Novice High - Merchant High - Whitesmith
Novice - Merchant - Alchemist - Novice High - Merchant High - Creator
Novice - Mage - Wizard - Novice High - Mage High - High Wizard
Novice - Mage - Sage - Novice High - Mage High - Professor
Novice - Acolyte - Priest - Novice High - Acolyte High - Hight Priest
Novice - Acolyte - Monk - Novice High - Acolyte High - Champion
Novice - Thief - Assassin - Novice High - Thief High - Assassin Cross
Novice - Thief - Rouge - Novice High - Thief High - Stalker
Novice - Archer - Hunter - Novice High - Archer High - Sniper
Novice - Archer - Bard - Novice High - Archer High - Clown
Novice - Archer - Dancer - Novice High - Archer High - Gypsy

Q: Interesting. So, these are 3rd Jobs?
A: No. 3rd Jobs will be something entirely different. These are just advanced versions of the 2nd Jobs. Hence they're called Advance 2nd Jobs.

Tips, Tricks, And Advice
From Kwan
Raise a Merchant alongside your normal character. Level up his Overcharge first, then Discount. You'll find RO much easier with more money to spend. Remember to have your normal character dispence drops into Kafra, then use the merchant to sell things off. Keep at least 2k on your normal guy, using Kafra storage costs 30Z

From Elric
Keep an eye on your weight! If it gets to 50%+ of your maximum weight allowance, you will no longer naturally heal until you unload enough junk to drop below 50%. I was hackin' & slashin' on Payon 1 when this happened to me.

From Sofie
When you're a novice and pick direct acces, you are automatically teleported to Izlude. DO NOT CHANGE YOUR SAVEPOINT! Why? Because Izlude's respawn point is close to a shop, a dog, and all the Kafra's (the shop is behind the Kafras - the fruit merchant). This basically allows you to respawn, sell off crap, heal, and teleport back straight away, without moving. Very handy when you're taking on harder monsters.

As a novice leveling in Prontera field (or wherever you level), don't bother identifying anything. As a matter of fact, it's nearly always best not to indentify stuff, unless if you note it sells for a huge ammount of money (probably better weapon), or very little (10 Z), as that probably means it's a rare headgear.

If you're not sure wether or not the item you have is valuable, ask someone before you sell it. I'm nearly always on, but then again, I have 5 characters, so try your luck XD

Your first character should be a Swordsman, Merchant, or Thief, since those are pretty easy to level. I personally recommend Merchant, for the purpose Kwan mentioned.

As soon as you change class to your first job, buy a few Flywings if you haven't found any, and make sure you have a Sprite Occarina at all times with you. Some of the areas you can teleport to don't have a Warp NPC yet, because they're still being developed.

From Jizuko
When you're low leveled, it's good to level in the Culverts Dungeon. To get access, go into Prontera and go to the building in the top left corner. In there, there should be 3 people. Talk to the recruiter and accept the mission and he'll give you some potions, then teleport you to the Culverts Dungeon entrance. Theifbugs assist, i.e, attack one and another one close by will attack you. Spores are not aggressive, they won't attack unless you attack first. Farmiliars (blue bats) are aggressive, but don't assist. Taurou (white rats) aren't aggressive either.

I'd recomend Orc Dungeon for ranged attacks (magic, arrows) at lv 25+ as Orc Zombies give off a lot of exp. lv 30+ for others.

other hot keys: F12 - Opens the hotkey menu for F1 to F9. There's three different sets. It loads set 1 when you start RO. (press F12 to cycle through, the number not in the boxes is the set number) (This is handy for Quick usage of skills.)

The only problem with the Hot Key menu is if you have more than one account, you have to reset the hot keys each time you log into an account. That limits me to 9 hot keys per account.

I have some installation problems, that hopefully you can help me with...

I've used both of the things for patching, one would work and say I was done the other would never connect to the server, and everytime I start the game it says, cannot init d3d or grf file has a problem...

From what I've been able to tell, the, "can not init D3D" error is due to not having DirextX 9+. Make sure you have the latest version of DX installed.

As for the patching issue, once the download progress bar stops, you have to wait for it to apply the patches to the game, then recompile it. If you can't click the Start Game button, then it's not finished patching. If you can click it, and it doesn't do anything, and running the patcher again downloads, then it could be that you don't have enough disk space needed to actually patch.

The next time you run the patcher, look at the file it says it's downloading. If it's not dated 12-28 or later, then it's not getting all the patches.

Oh I should have edited my last post, therewas something wierd going on, and I had to have adminstartive powers on the computer to run the patcher correctly, so when I tried to do it on my name it just froze up. Later I did it on my dads, and it worked fine, but I can't long into his name all the time... ...

Well, everything looks good, except I can't use 3D Sound on this Server (not a big deal really) and it doesn't show how much Exp Points each Monster gives when killed, and also it doesn't show the % of Exp that the Monster gave compared to how much is needed for your next level (for example, at around Level 50 and up, Porrings are only going to contribute about 0.01% Exp to your next Level).

I find this very useful to determin which Monsters are giving me enough Exp for my current Level (if I missed something, and this does exist in tRO, please don't hesitate to point it out to me).

And free telepoting,... well it's convienent, but it defeats the whole purpose of Riding a Pecopeco, except for running away from enemies (and it lets you go to any town from the start of the game without any difficulty at all ,... maybe that should be an option for places that you have already visited, or something)

Other than that, this Server is really good .

Edit: And well,... the Music doesn't fit nearly as well as the Music on the Spyder Lake Server,... heh, yea I'm going to replace the BGM immediatly .

Edit 2: ................ There's only Town PVP Battle Arenas.
On the Server I was playing on, there was also a main Battle Arena which was a Big Room, including little side areas so people could have one on one battles as well.
Having -Towns only- isn't good, because the towns are usually too big for Battle Arenas,... and there's usually nobody there as I've observed.

The XP info flag is turned off in the server config files, so we won't see that stuff. Just mouseover your XP bars to see the info.

Free teleporting is fine. There's already enough ways to spend your money on this server (Illegal Upgrader, Card Remover, MvP Card Seller, PC Shops, etc.).

The music is to the taste of Emuz, and he likes .HACK. I don't use music, so I don't care.

And frankly, PvP is stupid. Who cares if you're more powerful than me? Or if I'm more powerful than you? Frankly, I wouldn't miss PvP if it was removed. On the other hand, we do have an MvP arena, and a GM can enable PvP on any map...

Ok.. The three places that your respawn may be by default are: Izlude, Prontera or Geffen (more?)

I know of those three only. My latest two chrs weren't in izlude when they respawned. Geffen or Izlude are the best two respawns unless your pc's quick enough to handle prontera.

Doesn't that all depend what "path" you choose at the start?

I think any city with a Kafra is fair game for a respawn. I'd take Izlude myself as it's small and you have easy access to all the shops/services if you need to go after a respawn.

Gywall, in order to respawn somewhere, you have to talk to the Kafra there and choose Save. That sets your respawn point.

YOU CAN CHANGE IT. read the rest of it, you can freely change it after that, it's just suggested not to because Izlude has damn near everything you need.

Jeez.

MOST of everything you need - definitely everything for newbies/new characters.

If your PC can handle Prontera at its worst, then by all means use that as your spawn point.
