Sigh. The truly awful thing about this is that there was something like a one to three hour gap between when the earthquake was detected and when the tsunamis hit the shores. All these people would have had to do was walk/run/ride one mile away from the shore and they'd have nearly all survived. But because there was no infrastructure in place to get the warning out right away, they all walked around on the coast completely unaware until it was too late to get away. This is why natural disasters are always so much more horrific for developing nations, they just haven't got the capital or the infrastructure to deal with it. Terrible.

Those countries are poor because of poor choices made by G and other first world nations.

Well obviously, I just said the last I had heard it was pretty high but not too bad, but then when I wake up the count has gone to something that's ridiculously high

The whole situation is absolutely fucking insane. The American authorities knew of this tsunami outbreak some time ago, but did they tell any of the Asian countries? No. Why? Because, (and this is a direct quote):

"we don't have those countries in our contacts list"

CONTACTS LIST? What is this, a fucking date service? I'll ring Kate but I dont like hannah so I'll fuck her and not have her in my phone book? America can't fuck with countries like this, islands like Nicobar and countries like India simply don't have the capacity to estimate the scale and timing of tsunamis and quakes like this. A huge number of deaths could have been everted if they all contacted each other and told people to move inland, but instead those in the Western world, in the know, fucked Asia and everybody else again by not informing them of what was going to happen. I have a friend in Sri Lanka and I don't fucking know if he's dead or alive and quite frankly its not just the duty of America and the G8/developed countries to inform these countries, but its their duty to help develop these countries so they dont have to rely on dumb fucks like America's senior authorites.

The only county that was informed of the tsunamis was Kenya, by India, and they had just 3 deaths. What a fucking waste of modern communication that no-one bothered to tell anyone anything. They say 80,000 deaths, what they don't tell you is that there is up to half a million people still missing. Even if a quarter of those are deaths, thats still 225,000 deaths sans disease and It makes me fucking sick. Im scared shitless for my friend's wellbeing and Im extremely pissed off and amazed that in the 21st century no-one could tell just 11 countries that this was going to happen. Absolutely fucking amazing (Im sorry for the amount of expeletives but in this situation i really dont care about how bad my language is theres more important things at stake.)

You can't just predict tsunamis...They kind of have to be caused by something. Like an earthquake, and America cannot even detect earthquakes perfectly...

Thta's just pathetic!! I hope many people take protests about this thing! After hearing that, I can easily say that the U.S government are acting like terrorists themselves. Inhumane! It's their fault so many lives were lost!

God! I'm so angry right now!

Ziff - I suppose you could make an argument that maquilas are partially the product of US immigration restrictions, but I think it's kind of a tenuous leap to go from that to "Mexico is poor because of rich countries." Does not really follow. Besides, I don't really see what factories in Mexico have to do with poverty in South Asia.

F-Zero and Scatterheart - When you're done frothing and trying to contort this into some excuse to bash the US (politicizing tragedy, always charming), you might want to consider the fact that none of the severely affected countries had an effective system in place to warn everyone to get away from the shore. The reason they weren't contacted was precisely because there was nobody to contact for these things, and the few that could be contacted could not have gotten the message out to everyone fast enough. Like I said earlier, it's an infrastructure problem. Kenya got lucky because it took an extra couple of hours for the waves to reach them.

I swear, if God himself came down one day because he was pissed and started regining fire down from the heavens, we'd still be blamed for it.

so now it is the USA's fault that people died because america didn't bust their asses contacting people....

do you know how little that would have done....

okay, imagine this... you're out on the beach, and some guy comes funning out yelling "a tsunami is coming, run for your lives" or something like that....

do you honestly believe that is going to be very effective? I don't.... I'd laugh at whoever it was and think he was a lunatic....

plus, even IF the US figured it out before hand.... the waves struck within a couple of hours.... that's a lot of places to contact and evacuate before the waves hit..... again, not likely to happen
