China's fine, it mainly hit South Asia as shown by the stats. The waves likely died down when/if they reached China.

I felt one in the 3 range once... Montreal does get earthquakes but we're in an area where we're in no danger of getting the "big one" - just a ton of "little ones".

A town in Vermont got nailed with a high 2 a few years ago. No damage or anything, but there was a tiny section of the highway that was absolutely DESTROYED. Obviously it was the epicentre, but still... I would have hated to be ON that highway driving over it.

I heard the death toll is up around 13,000 now....

it'll probably rise a bit more as the days go by.... becaues of the damage and lack of food, clean water, etc.

This is awful. If anyone is able and should feel like dropping a few dollars their way, here are a few ways you can help.

We're lucky it didn't hit China or Japan, they're pretty major to the economy. But as for the poor folks who were actually there...

Wait, what's this about the Earth's rotation?

Bah. I doubt it's true. If the Earth's rotation was suddenly changed by even a small amount, wouldn't we all be sent flying?

he said disturbed.... not stopped.....

and that is a very powerful earthquake.... not too many reach the 9.0 range....

the earth's rotation isn't going to drastically change.... and we won't go flying.... don't worry

Latest figures suggest 23,000, and rising. The worst hit is Sri Lanka, over 10,000 deaths. What is amazing is, it wasn't just Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Maldives, India, etc. that was hit, but AFRICA was hit too- several areas were destroyed in kenya and Somalia, such was the strength of this quake. Ive been watching footage and its horrific- its not necesarrily the quake that killed, but the tsunamis created from such effects- theres a scene where around 1000 people standing on a beach watch these waves come in, and then a whole tidal wave erupts over half of them and everybody runs. In Sri Lanka whole towns are swept in water and where it isn't overcome theres whole heaps of dead bodies piled on top of each other, mass burial graves being made.Mostly the very young and old died, since they dont have the strength to swim up above the surface.

I have a friend visiting family right now in Sri Lanka, i really hope he's OK. It's amazing that nature can cause this kind of devastation, but It is to be expected.

This is terrible.

well.... I actually heard that the waves themselves weren't that high.... but it was that they were so wide.... and they moved so quickly... that once people realized what they were, it was too late to actually run to safer/higher ground....

from the reports I have read.... they were 30 foot waves.... so, nothing unusual.... but the 30 foot waves were hundreds of feet long.... so, once they hit the shore, they just kept moving inland....

I can barely imagine the kind of damage that this has caused....

Ten swedish people are dead, and 2000 are missing. I'm not surprised considering how many of the places affected are liked by swedish tourists.

It's gonna rise above 30 000, I hav that feeling.

Nice timing it happens after Christmas...

Any member on the board that is from there? South asia dosen't seem to have many Acmlmlers but...

I can see it hitting 100,000.... considering how many places it hit....

there are so many coastal resorts in that area.... I'm sure of it.... and probably a lot of coastal villages/cities too....

I doubt even if there was someone that they would be in the frame of mind to come here and post about it right now....

The Earth is an ass when it comes to disasters and timings.

Well, Reinfors lives in Malaysia but I doubt that it hit her.

I hate reports of that kind. <example>Hey everyone, 300,000 people die in an earthquake! And one of them is Swedish/American/Italian/Canadian/[..]! GASP I MEAN WHAT ARE THE ODDS!!!1 Screw the rest of them, let's get him out of there!</example> I'm serious. It sickens me. Either you care or you don't. Anything else is hypocritical.

...well, that was my first thought too. Althought it's always more shocking when it's your nationality. It's just a trick that the newspaper uses...

While I'm not quite as worked up over it as Jesper, I'll second his distaste of regionalism/nationalism. I guess I'm not as angered over it because I understand it as a natural human predisposition to identify more strongly with people who are like yourself. Still, a life is a life no matter what nation it comes from.
