The Chrono Trigger: Extension Project was started to add more to the original Chrono Trigger game. The plot will primarily be the same. (Why mess with perfection) however other story elements will be added. These elements will tie into the plot in a dynamic way hopefully. I don't want to make a game where you play Chrono Trigger, then a bunch of extra stuff tacked onto the end. I want it to feel like a full story and game. His program while still being updated and improved is an excellent editor. In fact Evil Peer and his program is the sole reason that I am taking this undertaking. (And any subsequent ones should I do so). I am excited to be using such an excellent tool and hopeully I'll use it to an extent he would approve of. So thank you Evil Peer. That's all very possible, and are all good ideas (the more playable characters might be tough to do though...). Have you thought of a name for this hack yet? Basic storyline? I know you just started, but I like info. *bad Chickenlump* |

=] Well being so new to this I suppose I did things in a newbie fashion I shall admit. I don't yet have a name. The storyline will be the original game however as much additions will be made possible. If new time eras are posible (in addition to the 6 or so original ones thean that will be included) For some basics of what i do have though. You can save the Reptites from extinction. Your actions direct what kind of society they develope and how they live and interact with humans ect. The Reptites are always ahead of the humans technologically because they had a head start (in 65 Million BC they already had palaces and traps ect.) And evil group of time travelers will either 1. be associated with Lavos. or 2. They are attempting to change time to their own advantages regardless of actions. More missions, more places to visit on the main map, generic promises of awesomenss to be added, ect. =] I have a few interesting ideas although more are welcome, or if anyone had something worth fixing in the game if it exists than that will be done too. Think of it as Chrono Trigger: Advanced I suppose? Crappy name so I'll think of something better. |

Some of the things you suggest are possible, though not necessarily by the current version of TF. Rough guesstimates follow. Have the Reptites "savable" from extiniction. 75% doable. Would have to reuse maps. Strings may be an issue. Affect the residents of each age to a larger degree. 45% doable. Strings. Add an evil time traveler group. 85% doable. Depends on whether you want to use new graphics, maps, etc. Expand interaction with Lavos and his plans. 15% doable. Strings are a big issue. Presumably more maps would be needed. New items, objects, weapons, accesories. 95% doable. There are several blank spots in the item / weapon / armor stuff. Strings are the major limiter here. Add playable characters. Big fat zero here. You could swap in other graphics to replace the current characters and change strings, but you cannot have more than 7 characters. The odds of everything other than the last entry should rise when later versions are released. ---Evil Peer |

Well, there's always the option of doing it himself. NOt neccesarily everything has to be done with TF after all

there's always the option of doing it himself. NOt neccesarily everything has to be done with TF after all True. But in the time it would take him to do it by hand, a version of TF that supports it would probably be out. Not that I am suggesting someone should take the easy way out and use a utility. It could never hurt to have another CT expert around. ---Evil Peer |

Hello Evil Peer =] Glad you made some comments on this, it feels encouraging. Now for the strings issue. I'm not terribly familiar with how the games are set up and work but I know that the strings could seriosuly limit how much can be added. The big question is would it be possible to increase the number of strings? Is it a hard wierd fact or something that could be changed? if it's based on a 1-999 system, if we adjusted it another digit to 1-9999 (which would give us WAY more than needed) could this work? All previous strings would need to be re coded or wired into the ROM but if this is possible it may be worth the grunt code work which I could undertake. I have somehow managed to develop patience to an extreme the past 2 years and would be willing to do it. For the 7 character limit. I'm sure this will technically be uncontrollable, but just as you have you 3 party group you walk with, what if you could in theory do the same to your 7 character group? Switch in and out characters from your selection pool? Or alternatively you can only have 7 heros, but you can choose 7 out of a pool of say 13? Once you hit your 7 hero limit you then are barred from acquiring anymore members? It would add another complicated element that serves to give me lots of work for a cool gimmick =] For map reuse, I'm not sure how much they did this but are the pallets interchangable? i.e. horizontal cliff from present corrosponds to ALL horizontal cliffs in ALL pallets regardless of time period? If so then a pallete change makes a whole new room. If not, then why not? Is it possible to rearrange and redo all the rooms so it matches? Again lots of work for me but who knows maybe worth it. Hopefully some hardcore grunt work can increse the string availability but I know the likelyhood of that is low. I suppose I'll just have to start learning some things =] |

I probably have no real idea about what I'm talking about, but... On the character limit thing, theoretically it would be possible to have events take a character in your party, save all of the relevant stats (EXP, level, equipment, stats) somewhere unused in memory, then replace it with another character permanently until you hit an event that swaps them back. Only problem is that it would be an unbelievably large amount of work to do, requiring a large amount of assembly. If nothing else... There's have to be a way to repoint the technique lists, as I'd expect the equipment setup would be copied from character to character. Like I said... I probably have no real idea about what I'm talking about. Either way... The project sounds quite interesting, but very ambitious for anyone, especially someone who's rather new to the whole process. Good luck. |

Yeah this is definitly ambitious. I do tend to be rather crazy when I get an idea. Fortuantly, I do already have some skills that I can apply to making the mode. The coding stuff is much more new to me than anything else, but I think I can work my way around it in time. But plot and map design should be places I can shine. We'll just have to see how it goes. I want to do as much as I can but the string limitations will be what kills me if anything does. So I hope there will be a way around it, even if it requires a re-do of all the strings. As long as I can find an process to do it, I'll be all set. =]

would it be possible to increase the number of strings? Strings are limited to 256 per string bank. However, there is no limit to the number of banks that can be used. Temporal Flux just has no means of creating and supporting new banks of strings at this time. For the 7 character limit. It might be possible to expand to 8 characters, though it would certainly require a lot of ASM rewriting, memory reallocation, and ROM data redistribution. It would be quite the task to undertake and would require many months (years?) of development. It is not possible to expand beyond 8 characters at all without creating an entirely new game. are the map pallets interchangable? Yes. ---Evil Peer |

@ Evil Peer: since having 8 characters is probably out of the question, what about the option to pick and choose you 7 out of a larger pool? Just make it so that once you have 7 all the other options refuse to help you out. Like maybe you can choose to have a Reptite fight by your side, but if you do Ayla would refuse to join you? Or similarly perhaps you can only choose Frog or Magus? (I'd need to rewrite part of the story so that might not be acceptable but it could be an option). My guess would be that it wouldn't work but it'd add a bit of interactivity to your choices that could be entertaining. As for the strings I guess my options are 1.) Be lazy and hope that you can figure it out and then thank you like crazy. or 2.) get learning and try to work on it myself. (I would of course share with you for an update to your editor). I am new so it might be a long time before I got to the point where I could be helpful though. @ Everyone: I would love to hear some suggestions for additions or fixes to the game. Any and all ideas are welcome. I'll take what we have an what my limitations are and start work ASAP on writing the new things. Then maps, blah blah ect. ect. A priority would be the Reptites and the 65 Milion BC because in my opinion there just wasn't enough stuff to do there. |

what about the option to pick and choose you 7 out of a larger pool? No, for pretty much the same reasons I have already stated. It is not an issue of how many characters you can recruit, it is that the entire game is designed around having only seven playable characters. ---Evil Peer |

@ Evil Peer: Well that's disappointing, but not surprising. =] I'll just direct my ideas to a similar addition to the game. I won't pester you for this addition to the editor but do you have an idea on the difficulty of being able to add string banks? I know how life gets in the way of projects but I'm just annoyingly curious. Since starting too much work is probably inadvisable I will spend the time writing up what I would like to add to the story and the effects it will have on the game and story. I have quite a few interesting ideas mulling around and hope that people find them entertaining. =]

I don't know if they're on his short list or not, but they are planned. Evil Peer seems to be a very meticulous and thorough person, and his own methodology, system, and timing will produce the best result. You can wait, but just get started on mapping, as Map Extension is on the short list for the next version of TF.

Yeah I defintily plan on waiting and certainly won't be asking him tackle this problem at any other time than his own desire to do so. There's plenty I can do in the meantime and lots for me to learn still so I'm sure things will fall into place fine =]

I don't know if they're on his short list or not, but they are planned. They might appear in the next version, and they may not. The only major feature left to implement that definately will be in the 2.0 release is Overworld event editing. After I have finished that, I will reassess the remaining items. Map Extension is on the short list for the next version of TF. Actually, it is not on the short list. Not anymore. ---Evil Peer |

I edited the first post with some new info and a "Progress" chart. I wrote a bunch of ideas down today at work. (I got paid too yay!) I got about a dozen new ideas written and completed. I don't want to give to many of my ideas away but one of them will hopefully be a Time Museum at the End of Time. Since Evil Peer may not be doing map extension we'll have to see how much room there is for additional maps but I think this is manageable. I'll get some pictures up when I get to working on it. I think it'll be relativly easy to draw them up, but then again I am a glutton for punishment. Edit: (Today I learned that you can not post if you already have the last post there, horray for learning) Wrote some stuff for people to look at. Hopefully some people are interested in this project. =] I have decided that I will be creating some new character specific sprites. They will be simple recolors and I have some experience with pixel art just not at the SNES level. But I'm not expecting too much. I have written up ideas for 6 new bad guys. I have their personalities and such written down and I'll get to making sprites for them probably tonight. Starting with a bad-ass little imp. Then a pimped out robot. Those I believe will be the easiest so I will start there. So expect some sprite edits sometime soon. New Characters Snarl- [65 Million BC] Full name Snarlouse Rentark. A Reptite fighter, he holds the Reptite fighting championship title. Chera Martris- [Dark Ages] One of the enlightened. She is a magician who is performing experiments to discover the nature of magic. Nort- [Middle Ages] An Imp with delusions of granduer. He feels he is the toughest roughest fighter in the world. He might wear a bad-ass leather jacket. Jess Redel- [Present Day] Convicted of crimes he was tossed into the king's jail to rot. Fred Murph- [Present Day] A contemporary of Lucca's. Although far less successful. Has many scars and injuries. Robot 184-F- [Future] After the coming of Lavos this robot eventually shut down. You find him and are able to fix him. He gives you items as a reward. |

Oh man! You're Right! I completely thought he meant it was just impossible or something... Well I suppose we shall just have to wait for the next update. =] I really hope it's the best outcome because I deifntily want to add a few dungeon like areas. =] |
