Since I've been working at the game store, I've been hearing a lot of point of views about cheating in video games.

Some won't even pick up a strategy, saying that is a form of cheating. Now, I normally only use the guide to help me out in RPGs and the likes. And for the most, I'm several pages ahead before I look down at the book. I don't really see it has a form of cheating, but more or less, a, well, guide. I hear people saying that it ruins the game....well, that's normally the case if...

a) the book was badly written in the first place
b) you look through the book before you play it
c) you read every inch and corner of the book

Now, all the Gamesharks and so forth, now I see that as cheating. I actually don't feel like selling things like that, especially to kids. What is that teaching them, huh?

The only game that I have really cheated on, were the two newest GTA titles. I will admit, I used cheat codes that I found online. That's pretty much it.

No. I'm quite anti-cheating, though, I will occasionally pick up a strategy guide... If only for the sake of completion. I don't really view it as cheating. As for game enhancers... They can be used for good as well as evil. Modifying things to make games more random and bizzare is good. Plus, if it weren't for my AR, I'd give up on pok

Well, as far as using a player's guide, FAQ / Walkthrough, or any other thing that fits into that category, I try to avoid it if I'm at all able to. I find the game more fun to play if I'm able to figure out things myself, and possibly beat the game without looking at a guide. If I'm able to do that, then I go back and take a look at an FAQ / Walkthrough to see what sort of things I missed. Like you posted, Anya, it does ruin the game to read through the whole book ahead of time; there's no element of surprise as to what's going to come next The last player's guide I got was one for Majora's Mask. We didn't even own the game back then. I'd just bought it because I liked Zelda games

The only Gameshark we ever had was for N64, and my brother busted that by opening it up and 'unknowingly' touching all the stuff inside Most of the time I use those things to try to make a code for infinite money, or infinite health or something. As long as I'm not able to just go into a list and pick what cheats I want to enable, it's fine by me. Unfortuantely, 70% of the people that buy one of those won't ever think of trying to make their own codes.

Then, there's also the things you wouldn't be able to get in games normally. Stuff that's otherwise not been used in the final version of the game, that you can only get to through a code / codes.

In short, if you're going to cheat, as long as you put some personal effort into getting as far through the game as you can beforehand, you're trying to make your own cheats, or you need it for something that's not accessible in the game normally, I don't see anything wrong with it

Well, I wouldn't call a guide book a form of cheating since you still have to do the work, its just that it ruins or spoils the game so to speak. Any time your about to fight a boss, you can look up strats to beat it when you could take the time to figure out your own plan. Sometimes, unexpected things happen in games which would require the gamer to come up with ideas of how to tackle the problem spontaneously, but when you already know what the hell is about to happen then the experience isn't as good imo.

Ever since the days of my Gameshark deleting my OoT files, I haven't cared to use one since.

I'm quite anti-cheating, anti-FAQ, myself. Why? That's me, face it, like it or hate it. I've had these kinds of my debates with my friends and it really just comes down to the type of gamer you are.

Example: My friend told me he had been using GameFAQ's for nearly everything in Suikoden II, where to go, what to do, who to get. This is a game spanning about 50+ hours of gameplay, and has a total of 108 characters go get. Do I care? No, where's the gratification that YOU got them? With a FAQ, nowhere. I played this game and used no help whatsoever, and loved every minute of it. Sure, maybe I got a 10+ hour bonus on top of all this, but does it really matter? I played the game to my liking and refused to seek help through a FAQ or whatnot. I think it degrades such a game when you read something "this guy is HERE, in this town, DO THIS to get him." Thanks?

For the same friend, he used FAQ's for nearly the entire Metroid Prime game. And guess what? When I go on and on about how wonderful that game is he's just kind "ugh yeah sure". Why? Maybe because he didn't get the fun of figuring out things for himself, exploring the world to his extent, getting the satisfaction of finding items alone, playing the game?

I'm all for figuring things out myself. Back in the day did we have GameFAQ's for Metroid? Sure, maybe we did, but at 5 years old of age could I really manage to get there on a computer? Or even read for the matter? No. Puzzles are fun, and I like to find out how to get through them on my own.

I buy some strategy guides myself for use as Kyouji Craw mentioned. Mainly for RPG's, -after- I have successfully reached the end of the game and am going back to collect things. Hell, I bought the FFIX strategy guide when I was one the 4th Disc. Ironically, I still ended up getting all cards, not missing any of the ones that were "get or miss", on my own. Other times I simply buy Strategy guides as a trophy or collectors item.

As for cheating? Don't even get me started. Maybe I'm just some WACKO freak whom happens to love battles in RPG's. To me, the gameplay / battle system is nearly 50% of the game. Example? Xenosaga, I got so bored with that game at about 20-30 hours of gameplay and just stopped playing it because the battle system was so lame.

I have a friend who'll instinctively cheat on RPG's, here's why. "I play for the storyline, not for boring battles." Being quite a nerd, this just pisses me off. As I said before, I'd say battling in RPG's is nearly half of the entire game. That's almost a factor to why I buy certain RPG's, "to have fun fighting".

But do I cheat? Yes. Easily. Once I've completed a game, I have no problem in going back and possibly cheating. But I'd still argue to "rightfully" play the game, play it as it was made and by yourself like a real gamer.

Go ahead, take this post offensively if you wish. That's just the gamer I am. I buy games, to play them the way they were meant to be played and with no help unless it's beyond impossibility.

If you've managed to get through and read all of this, I congratualate you on witnessing my biggest arguement about gaming

I guess this calls for the "My 2 cents" that some would say?

That's my 2 cents.

I forgot to add something to my first post. I do use walkthroughs for some games right from the start, but they all into the category of ROMs that are Japanese, with no translation patch released. I don't read the language (although I'm trying to learn it ), so it's quite hard to figure out where to go and what to do. Of course, if I continue on this, it'd belong in the Emu Ethics thread instead, so I'll stop there.

I went through the game probably the same way you did. The only help I had was the thing that pops up periodically with a hint, telling you to press 'Z' to see where to go on the map.

That's another thing right there. What about the hint systems they put in games? What's your opinion on those? Personally, I think that if they don't spoil a whole lot of the game (guiding you through every step) they're just fine being there. The only example I've seen of that is in Metroid Prime, and there was an option to turn that off anyways.

The one purchase you can make in the GRADE shop in Tales of Symphonia also comes to mind. If you've collected 3000 GRADE, you can 'buy' something that multiplies whatever experience you get at the end of a battle by 10. This, as I found on my 3rd or 4th playthrough, makes the game quite easy on lower difficulties. Do you think it's ok to choose that option, keeping in mind that you wouldn't have enough GRADE needed to buy it 'till your 2nd or 3rd play of the game?

Back on the topic of what Xeogred said, I can understand why your friend didn't seem to think the game was all that great. He was just guided through everything, and pretty much didn't get to do anything himself except control Samus. The bosses might've been a bit exciting, but still, I like it better when I beat any boss in any game, without knowing beforehand what to do when I fought it.

Here's another question for you. If you don't have a younger sibling, or if you're off living on your own, just assume you do for this bit. They're playing the game, but they've got themselves stuck at a part that you know how to get through, but they obviously don't. Let's say they ask you how to get through it. Do you tell them, or do you leave them to figure it out themselves? I'd rather leave them to figure it out themselves, but from my experiences, they won't stop bugging you 'till you tell them what to do

Exactly. As long as your make your best effort to beat the game without help once, I see no problem with going through it again and cheating.

Games are made to have fun. For some people, that means cheating to get a god-like character or every gun in the game. For others, that means not using a strategy guide and using a code to make the game harder.

I hate being stuck somewhere. A difficult puzzle, an item I can't find, whatever the case it pisses me off. So I'll look at a guide to figure it out so I can get on with the rest of the game. I try to figure things out myself, but when it's too hard I'd rather find the solution and get on with the game.

Using codes to get stuff that's not normally in the game is fine with me. Using a Gameshark to make custom characters in FFT (if only I had a gameshark...) is fine with me. Feel like making the game harder? Go right ahead. Just want to have the satisfaction of destroying everything with the strongest weapon in existence? Hey, fine with me. Whatever makes the game fun for you.

*re-reads the posts in the thread*

What? Am I the only one who doesn't see this as some sort of moral issue and just wants to have fun with his games?

I cheat in GTA. Its great to fly around in a jetpack and shoot people with a rocket launcher. Cheating is a part of what makes the game fun, the missions can get dull.

But other than that, with games that I am playing, I only cheat after I beat the game. But thats because I like to find out what happens how its supposed to. Arcade-style games with no real plot, cheat away.

Also, Kyouji, what is an AR?

I don't even think of cheating until I've gone through the game and beat it once. If I've tried hundreds of times and can't get past a certain spot after weeks of attempts, then yea, I'll cheat or use a guide. If I've beaten the game and want completion, I'll use a guide too.

I used to be the biggest cheater in the gaming world, back when I was like 6 or 7 and I wasn't any good at the games I played.

Nowadays, I think cheating is just the worst thing a person can do in a game. I won't touch strategy guides unless I've beaten the game and I wanna try my hand at godmoding, I only use cheat codes again if I've beaten the game already and even then only to have fun (like the news headline display system in GTA).

As far as cheating in GTA goes, actually, by the end of the game I've amassed so much money that I don't need to cheat to get a rocket launcher.

I generally avoid cheating unless the difficulty level is getting to the point of no longer being any fun. What I usually do is play through the game with as little help as possible, then go back and use cheats to get the extras. Strategy guides I usually only use as a quick reference or to look up how to get secrets. I prefer to make my own strategies and such, it's more fun that way. If a level is particularly frustrating I will use cheats to get by it, though. I also like to hack GS/AR codes, not so much to cheat with as just for the fun of making them. (Hence why I often make codes that aren't especially useful for cheating. ) Also once I've finished a game it's often fun to just throw on an assload of cheats and plow through it again as fast as possible.

My brother on the other hand, he just cheats at everything whenever possible. I hate that.

After, when I was like 10, i had goten all 151 pokemon in Red, LEGITIMATELY. After that imucked around with a cheating device to the point of my game fucking over and dying. You know what's funny? I didn't even know about cheat codes when I was that age. Did they even make them back then.

That was around 16 years ago... right?

So 1988. I don't really know.... That's a good question, when was the first real cheat code introduced in a game?

The first cheat code was the continue code in Super Mario Bros. (hold A and press Start when beginning a game to begin at the world you got game over in instead of world 1, assuming the world you got game over in is not world 1)

Yes. Let the cheaters cheat at home for all I care. But when they cheat to be better than other people VERY bad. Kinda ruins the game for everyone.

I dont cheat until Ive beaten the game. I want teh full value and playability until I rip things apart with game altering things .

Even FAQs, unless Im TRULY stuck, I wont turn for their help, but the minute I see the ending screen *runs to computer, pulls up 8 different FAQs* Yep.

I used to cheat all the time when I was little. Now, since a good chunk of the games I play now are online based (MK: D, Halo 2), I have since weaned myself off that habit.

My true test will be not to look at a guide when Resident Evil 4 comes out. That thing looks harder than an iron jawbreaker...
