Until there is a Parappa for PSP, there will be no killer apps.

Although there IS Tony Hawk Underground 2: Remix and some others like Wipeout, Lumines and others.

I just wouldn't call anything a killer app right now.

The DS had Super Mario 64 - it wasn't a killer app but it was the game that pretty much everyone bought when the system was released. They need a killer app as well although if they do go online with it, that might help.

There's nothing in the PSP's lineup that screams "must buy". Their strength is that they have a strong launch lineup (much like the GBA) and that there's several good to very good games out there. There's no one title that stands out.

I wouldn't call THUG2: Remix a killer app because it's basically the same game with a few extra features. Someone who has the original for the PS2 probably doesn't need it.

You know, Ziff's points are pretty valid, even if I'm a big Nintendo fan myself... yet I'm not gonna buy either system... I think I'll invest in a top loader NES and increase my NES collection instead.

Oh, and if you didn't catch my point. It's that games as a whole these days are going down in the fun factor. You have a few special gems out there, but the majority sucks.

But still... Look at how much Nintendo did that with the GBA.
It seems that they've already started doing the same with the DS. It's only a matter of time before we see Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on the DS.

I was severely dissapointed in the GBA. Sure, they had a few great games, but they were overshadowed by the countless re-makes and utterly crap games. I did buy a GBA (got stolen by my brother... Figures), and I had the first Castlevania game. I quite enjoyed it, but when I had more money to blow on a GBA game, there was nothing to choose from.
Unfortunately, I bought DBZ: LoG from K-Mart, and couldn't return it when I found out it sucked.

I got used to seeing Nintendo games, and always being able to tell if that would be a great game or not. You could easily find really great games for the GC. With the GBA on the other hand... People bought Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 because they were expecting extras. I got dissapointed in the ROM for F-sakes, just because I went through the entire game just for a crappy world map! ...Oh! We also have that old-style classic Mario Bros. extra game... That came with every Mario Advance game. Yay!

Unless I see some new or at least some totally re-amped re-makes, I won't be buying a DS. Untill then, I'll just stick with the bigger consoles. Good ol' Super Smash Bros. Melee!

Ok!

As for some other info, check:

After those crappy PS1s and PS2s, I wonder why people want to pay $250,- when they still know this...

If word of this got out to the entire public, it'd surely hurt Sony.
Shows how confident Nintendo are in their hardware, and opposite for Sony.

Scatterheart: They hadn't been any remakes announced, and guess what? Half of thoose remakes for GBA was by popular request... I swear people did beg for a SMB3 remake but people hated it when it was finally released, becuse there wasn't enough extras. -.-

SM64DS have been the only remake so far, I doubt they release a port of Ocarina of time soon, and most of the first party Nintendo games in general for any handheld or console aren't remakes. They're just been one for DS, one so far. And I must say it's one of the better remakes SM64DS.

Animal crossing DS and Puppy times seems to be two titles that is sought after currently, but there will appear big games on E3 like usual...

This just goes to show you should CHECK before buying anything. A quick read around would of told you the only real extras in Super Mario Advance 4 were found with the use of the e-Reader.

Super Mario Advance 3 (that's Yoshi's Island) has six whole new levels though, I might add.

Also, it sounds like you just blindly missed some of the best games on the GBA... Lets list a few of the major Nintendo games...

Advance Wars
Advance Wars 2 (both very similar but both very brilliant)
Golden Sun
Golden Sun 2 (classy RPG games)
Metroid Fusion
Metroid Zero Mission
Wario Land 4
Super Mario Kart SC
F-Zero Maximum Velocity
F-Zero GP
Wario Ware (brilliance)
Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga (fans of Paper Mario and Mario in general need this game)
Mario Vs. Donkey Kong (if you loved Donkey Kong 94 on the GB, a fan favourite, you'll probably like this too)
The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap (wonderful, wonderful)

FIRE EMBLEM DAMN YOU. FIRE EMBLEM.

None of those are ports, although Zero Mission is a 'remake' but it's practically an entirely new game.

Those are all games in my collection. Haven't regretted buying any. I just think that counts as a little more than a 'FEW great games'.

Also, Zelda: A Link to the Past is worth buying just because it's awesome, even if it is mostly a port. At least, for Zelda fans anyway. And especially if you're able to play Four Swords. Primarily. If you can't you'll miss out on a fun game and the new dungeon and ability in ALttP.

I love Wario Land 4. It was something special with that game. The music was wonderful and the bosses were interesting.

I also like Golden Sun alot. Especially the music in Kolima Forest.

Ummm, yea, there is just something wrong with that.

And since I am tired (DDR), I'll just do a little copy and paste from my journal:

I really want a PsP. I mean, I really, really want one. So much in fact, that I might trade in a lot of my stuff, including my Gameboy SP and the few games that I have left for it. But I'm just not 100% sure. I mean, I only play my gameboy when I really need to get some sleep, in bed, or when I am waiting around for something.

I've seen the PsP. Played a few games on it. Its fucking amazing. I can tell that I'll use it more than the gameboy. But then again, the games are a lot more money (between $40-$50), and there is the whole memory factor. In do time, I'll need more memory if I want to take my songs with me (other than a CD player).

I heard that the PsP will be able to use AIM later on, but then Colleen pointed out, the PsP doesn't have a key pad, so how are you going to type? Something I totally overlooked.

I just don't know. Maybe I'm just getting into the hype of all of it, because I am in the thick of it all.

I didn't have to open, but I did have to work the afternoon and night shift. It was insane (I've been using that word a lot tonight). People were coming in, trading their old items to get more money for the PsP, people asking for it, buying it, and of course, being back defective ones. One case, the X button would not work. Another case, it wouldn't even turn back on (power switch was broken) and we've gotten a few calls about broken pixels. I guess they didn't learn from the Japan release.

We had over 60 reserves, and we got about 80 of them in. When I left tonight, we had about 20+ left. We are taking reserves for the 3rd shipment, which should be sometime next week.

Here are the bundles through our website and not at the store. It's fucking insane!!! The Specs can be seen here, and nothing really on the AIM feature, as far as I can tell. Ah, found it. It shows the attachable keyboard for the PsP.

~~

I got a PsP. Yea, I know, save it. I wanted one, I had the games that I really didn't play anymore, so there. I only paid $30 for the PsP; talk about sweet, huh?

The screen/picture, is beautiful!! Spider-Man 2 the movie looks amazing on it. I don't even think my TV has a picture this good.

I got the USB port so I can throw some songs on there to start off. Later on, I'll get more memory, but for now, I'm good. Everywhere is out of the three games that I really want, so while at work, I played a few that we did have, and I went with Wipeout Pure. Game's great, just gotta get a feel for the controls.

I know Wipeout Pure and Lumines are supposed to be great. Other games range from good to very good depending on whether or not you like certain genres. Very few average games but nothing that is a must-buy.

I want the Ridge Racer game and Vampire Chornicles. I've only heard tales of the beauty and awesome of the new Ape Escape as well as Metal Gear Ac!d. But again. I'm waiting til' Christmas time before choosing a system

Incidentally, DS has the new Castlevania and two Pokemon games coming. Right now, unless a literal killer app comes out for the PSP, I'm knd of sold to the DS. But there is some hope that Sony and its new PSP can bring something out that will pique my interest more than some Final Fantasy movie.

I'll be honest, I don't entirely see the logic in a portable system that uses a disc format. Yeah, it holds more data (and is better for home consoles), but consider durability for a second. People are clumsy. I've dropped a GBC in the rain. The game was ejected by the impact - Pokemon Red, if you were curious. I popped the game back in, and resumed my wanderings from my last save point. If that happened with a CD? At best, the disc would require cleaning. Or, equally likely, it could be scratched, the effects ranging from minorly annoying to rendering the game unplayable.

Meh, as it is the PSP is too damn expensive for me anyway.

UMDs are self-contained and protected. It's not like a CD player.

Although they are truly deadly weapons when utilized by might Ninjas.

Yeah, they're strange... think of them as cartridge CD's in a sense. The CD is built in and unless something scratches the exposed surface, they should be fine.

People at school didn't know it was out yet... until I told them they showed it on the news. Here was a conversation that happened (it pretty much went like this):

"Yeah... and Sony is doing too much advertising with the PSP since it was on the news this morning..."
"When does it come out?"
"Yesterday..."
"NO WAY!? REALLY!? I NEED TO GET ONE NOW!"
"Whoa, wait a minute, have you considered the DS?"
"No, the DS sucks because it features Mario and Pokemon."
"And what does the PSP have?"
"Music and movies. Plus some violent games."

...talk about being hyped. And on the news it never said "handheld game system" at anytime. They said it can play music and movies with great quality. They never mentioned the games... shouldn't that be the prime concern?

...and to top it off, I told them they should research about the sales in Japan and the problems with it's launch there due to really critical key points. Did they? No, they said they (get this) know that the PSP will be better than the DS.

Final Verdict: Can't come up with one yet until I go play a PSP for myself, but right now there are almost no games that I have not already played way too much... so the DS wins due to the fact they are being different in their games, minus SM64DS, which was a completly better remake of SM64.

Note that this is my opinion and not a fact. Don't treat it as a fact.

I got to hold one.

Aside from the lame analog nub, and the fact that the square button -- while fully functional -- felt really wierd (it didn't go down evenly -- it was definitely lobsided) and the thing was just huge...my hands didn't fit well over the R/L buttons, but then I wasn't playing it, just holding.

The game my sister was playing (somewhat like RO, but not as shitty and not sprite based) looked awesome graphic-wise, but seemed pretty boring overall.

The UMDs could doubtably stand one drop (though with 50$ disks, I wouldn't go trying it) since they're nothing mroe than a piece of plastic with a large disk inside that contains a large hole for the reader -- which means there's still a lot of room for stuff to get in there, like water or a fingerprint -- and probably aren't that stable.

Though you have to admit, it is nice...
