Ok!

Do you have a source for the sale records in the UK? Sounds interesting.

I have a feeling that there is going to be a way around that. Like a burner that can burn movies to make them work in the PsP, and heck, maybe even the Ps2 games aswell. Of course, you're prob gonna need a chip too....

Uhhhh, unless you have access to UMD file converters and something to move write on blank UMDs...I don't think that's possible.

Future Shop in Canada's opening at 8 AM on Thursday (since WHEN do they open early?!?) to sell PSP's. Only deals I saw were packages with games, which I really don't think is the way to go. But the Sony minions will lap them up regardless.

I'm shocked DS sold so incredibly well in Europe! With no sign of PSP coming out in Europe any time soon, I'd have to say the day is Nintendo's.

...No, the PSP does NOT use a touch screen.

Nintendo's always done well in Europe. The delay only helps since they'll get roughly the same head start in Europe as in North America. Even though I think the delay was pulled off rather poorly.

Well, there rumours that Nintendo is going to have 2 hour videos on DS carts and the first videos will be Disney Titles. And now that wifi was announced for the DS, the PSP has a lot to compete with.

400 vs 200. 200 wins.

Big graphics versus last generation graphics. Big graphics win.

Strong first party line up with innovative games vs. gigantic port and high quality game magnet. Tie

Right now, it's anyone's game. Europe isn't an integral market. In fact, it can be circumvented and a company can rely almost exclusively on either NA or Japan/Asia to do their sales. So, the lack of European saturation won't kill Sony. The lack of good titles is a non-issue. According to sources in Sony, the technical problems that were occuring in Jap. units are no longer major problems and have been ironed out in their near entirety. The only thing I can see hurting Sony is the POTENTIAL announcement of Nintendo based media for the DS and the GBA successor due this winter.

The death stretch is going to be the 2005 Christmas season. Do or die, final death for handheld supremacy is coming. And it is in less than a year. And both companies are going in absurdly strong. One running on fan-base in order to gain support, the other running in on not exactly unfounded hype. Until then, I'm going to refrain but will have to say my money is on Nintendo. The only thing that will help Sony is a large company trying to split the market. Even if a company releases a Zodiac or an N-Gage, but aims it at kids, offers half-decent content and keeps it in the necessary under $150 zone...Then we could see the market change.

But, hold your breath and wait for Kris Kringle, the patron saint of Odessa, or whatever you want to call him, to cast the final judgement on this battle.

Welcome to Megiddo, have fun.

Europe's still a pretty sizable market. Maybe it's the #3 market but you're going to focus more on that than, say, Australia or Latin America.

There's one other thing to consider - overlap. I don't know how many people are going to have both a DS and a PSP in their collection, but it certainly won't be 5% of the market or any small number like that.

As for the next version of the GB... Let's wait until E3. Nintendo can pull many different things out of their hat, we know that from experience.

There isn't going to be a "next GameBoy" any time soon. Even Reggie said so. Not this E3, and probably not next E3 either. Nintendo will come out with lots of other shockers and surprises though. We just have to wait 54 more days to find out what they are.

I will not be surprised if Pokemon will sweep the floor, sure it's not as big as back in 1999-2000 but it still have a nice fanbase. Pokemon may have a not so intresting story (bad bad guy team, finish the elite four) but it have one of the more balanced battle systems I have seen.

Well, the DS was succeful in UK, and it was in Sweden too. Considering how Nintendo crazy we was at some point it's not surprising.

The DS touch screen is durable, I hadn't seen a single scratch on mine and yet I have played my Wario ware demo like crazy.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was the price too, Nintendo was partly succeful with the Famicom and the NES becuse how cheap it was. And the ARM architure is alot more powerful than the RISC one I heard. Not to say, more powersaving. Hertz dosen't matter that much...althought i'm not denying that PSP is more powerful but the DS is not really that far behind.

Althought I think it's mainly 2D games that makes the DS succeful, it's not how many dimensions they are but how nicely it works.

Pokemon will only become really big again once Nintendo makes a *proper* Pokemon RPG game for the Gamecube. Then again, the wireless thing for the DS...

Also, I think we have to remember that battery life is desperately important. Those PSPs are *apparently* going to eat away at the batteries like heck. Consumers won't stand for that. It won't stop the hype but it will cause problems when it comes to a second wave of sales and a longevity in games sales (who wants to spend money on a game when you have to spend almost as much money on batteries just to play it?). I'll tell you something, chargers will sell well for awhile.

The handheld market won't go either way until the next GameBoy anyway. Even if the PSP were to win this stage, it would be interesting to see how it would stand against a new GameBoy.

Heh, I wonder what you would call a proper RPGfor Gamecube (thought there is Pokemon colleseum, if you want to call that proper or not it does have a RPG mode...). Besides half of the concept with Pokemon is the trading, which would be easier on handhelds. There is a Pokemon game for Gamecube calling Pokemon XD or something anyway, but I have no idea about connectivity to DS and the Gamecube. The revolution is going to have that thought...

Nintendo keep saying that the DS is their third pillar so there could be a Gameboy beside the DS. But well, i'm happy enough with my DS for the moment.

Spend more money on batteries, uhh... well. You don't have tp replace the battery on a PSP that often, and neither on the DS. It would just take time to recharge.

Ok!

As for my thoughts on the moment. PSP might appeal to the current Playstation and XBOX public. But I wonder how many people of that public own a GBA?

What I want to say, I just think that Sony opens a new market. Making people buy a handheld that never bought a handheld before.

Therefore, I think the market overall will just grow, making enough room for two players, that aren't even competing in the same market.

So, all the hype about the "battle between handhelds" is in fact not true. And I think both Nintendo and Sony know it. Both will be succesful, very succesful, mind my words.

As for my own choice, I go for Nintendo DS. I like the innovation, the 2D games and the huge amount of RPGs announced for the system. Above that comes the nice price, Nintendo games and GBA support.

As for the PSP, I might buy it when "new" games will be released for the system. And, above all, battery life will get better and the price will get lower.

I'd still say that Pokemon's big in the "gaming" sense. The fever might have died down but the games themselves are still high quality - Fire Red/Leaf Green got great reviews, and they're basically remakes of the originals!

...Pokemon Dash excluded of course.

Impala, a huge number of gamers have GameBoys, it's the best selling console, isn't it?

How the heck are they going to make the battery life 'better'? That's all down to the people who make the batteries surely, and if anything, battery life is going to get worse as games get more advanced.

Besides I heard that advances in the battery technology are going slowly, so I doubt they would get that much better in the PSP lifetime. Althought I wouldn't be surprised if there was 3rd party batteries with some longer battery life. There is ones for GBA SP.

Well, for one thing it's against the interests of the companies to make their batteries last longer, ain't it?

The GBA SP's battery has a great lifespan.

Wait, you mean #3 out of the 3 markets that there are? Because Latin and South America have MILLION able to buy games regularly, as does Africa. About the only other market there is is Australia. And that is generally lumped in with Asia and or Europe.

OK! There is a problem with your thinking. I'm not one of the "X-Box" crowd. I rented all three systems and chose the X-Box. It has games that interest me as a gamer, and it doesn't have the shitty Gamecube controller that I want to bash against a small child's skull due to it's horrible lay out. The Gamecube has some of the crappiest, no THE crappiest online service since Nintendo 64 (SNES HAD BETTER ONLINE THAN THE GAMECUBE, FOR CHRISSAKE!) And guess what. I own two Gameboys, and am planning on getting a DS. You know why? I prefer the content on those systems to what has been announced on PSP, thus far. Yoshi's Touch 'n' Go and Castlevania DS are all I would need to live. And given that two new Pokemon games are coming out for it. I can hardly hold a candle to the PSP. I can hardly fart on it. There is ONE game that interests me on that. And that is Dark Stalkers (Vampire Chronicles or whatever they are calling it now).

"There isn't going to be a "next GameBoy" any time soon. Even Reggie said so. Not this E3, and probably not next E3 either. Nintendo will come out with lots of other shockers and surprises though. We just have to wait 54 more days to find out what they are. "

FYI - GBA 2 is coming out. A new reiteration, at Christmas Time. Speculation has been that this will be more heavily media enabled than the DS and may feature some sort of patching ability that will link the traditional Gameboy hardware with the new DS.

I remember when the X-Box was coming out. "OMG IT WILL FAIL!" screamed the drooling morons. I laughed and got the system anyways. There was no gamble. I understood something. Microsoft is a gigantic company. There is no way that a light weight like Nintendo can hurt them. The only competition that the X-Box has is the PS2. And the war between those systems is going splendid with Microsoft's brute beating the PS2 on it's head and starting to really climb up. And remember, this is Microsoft's first time out. Let's look at Sony. It now has over a decade of experience with systems and marketing. Nintendo has over a century. But that is not concentrated on the electronics market. (back to Sony) I'm pretty sure that the PSP and the DS will be in direct competition for what has become the most important chunk of the videogame market. 18-30. Disposable income. No real life goals. Come on. What the hell else can they do? Now, PSP will have the upper hand here. So, the battle lines are being drawn right now. This is all out business war. Nintendo has EVERYONE up to 12. And they have to fiercely protect their business there by making "hipper" commercials with a darker tinge matching the younger generation's wish to be mature. Now, the really nagging question is who will eat up the middle market. (12-18). This is the REAL fight. With the DS having a competitive price point, it has grabbed the lower half of that demographic. But the PSP has the upper echelons of age in its grasp. Looking from that perspective, the buying power of the older people will amount to something that will prompt Nintendo to literally build a handheld for kids. That is their only secure market. God help them if Sony can move forward into that. More $$$ > Tried and true company.

Now, the battery dilemma. The North American units are rumoured to have a different architecture to their Japanese counterparts. Just better built is all, really. And apparently the batteries they have jammed into the PSP for NA has a lil' more longevity than the Jap. model. Now, if Sony can be a badass and toss down a DS length battery, I would probably change my mind on that. I would think Sony would have complete domination if that were the case. Fyxe, the batteries are now built into the systems and are recharging sorts. It is in the best interest of the company to get the consumer to buy their system. And if their system is going to slump because of shitacular batteries, then guess what. That company will have to withdraw and concede defeat until the next generation round.

As I've said before, there is only one consistent risk in this game for Nintendo. And that is the eating up of the youth gamers. And the same goes for Sony, but with mature gamers. I'm not saying this is the case (though there has apparently been some new bankrolling for more hardware projects at Microsoft...) but if MS or another large company can get a muscle bound handheld that will split the market, that will decide the victor. If MS decides to market to the kiddos, then if they have more NA themed content, then a contest or an arms race will break out and Nintendo will lose a good deal of market share and will crash like bizzinitch because they've lost the upper ages. But if MS or another company decides to hop the knob of the 18+ crowd, then Sony's fKitten Yiffer is imminent and Nintendo win's this round.

Nobody's confirmed GBA2, it's all idle speculation. They could just bring the Media Player over from Japan, you know.

Microsoft... the kids... *laughs* That's a good one.

Crazy story of the day: My mom went over to our friend's house tonight and her kid was ALREADY playing with a brand new PSP - he got it through someone who works in marketing and had/has 10 systems to give away.
