I'm still up in the air as to if I want to buy this Sony handheld yet. A lot of people are saying that it might end up being like the Game Gear, as fasr as the battery life is concerned.

Orginally, the battery life was set at only a few hours, now its said to be anywhere between 4-8 hours, depending the game that you are playing.

The best part of the PSP, thus far, is that FF7:AC will be on it (but you can also get the DVD version of this movie) and another FF RPG-like game, which I think is called "After the Crisis".

Also, you can play imported games on the PSP since there will be no region code or any shit like that. But, there is no sure thing that an american PSP will play a Japan game flawless.

Right now, I am hearing that the PSP will be under $200, but the exact price is still unknown to me, and to the database at work. As of right now, we're taking in $50 deposit to hold it for people for when it does come out. My guess, that it'll be $199.99 dollars.

I am not getting one. Why?

First off, instead of cartridges the PSP uses discs. Now wouldn't that cause load times and also, the discs could get scratched? For a handheld, not good.

Second, the controller layout is way too similar to the PSOne and PS2. Therefore, this will cause even more games to use the same controller layout.

Third, I don't think battery life will last long. I believe that the PSP uses AA or AAA batteries, so you would probably end up spending more for batteries alone then buying games. And if it varies for the game you are playing, then the 2D games will last for 8 hours while the uber-graphical 3D games will last 4 hours... not very well planned. Also, what about using the wireless feature? That could drain even more battery life. And I bet Sony will release Sony batteries so they could make more money...

Fourth... I already have a DS...

Now I am not saying that this isn't going to be a good system, but I am really concerned with battery life. The DS can have up to 10 hours of gameplay for every 4 hours of charging for up to 500 charges, then battery life is only 70% (which means 7 hours of gameplay). If the PSP is only having 4-8 hours battery life varying for each game, that will just be... too little gameplay. Plus looking at the games that are going to be available, it looks too similar to the PS2's game library...

EDIT: Let's see... Gran Turismo 4 and Gran Turismo 4 Mobile... if you have it for the PS2, why get it for the PSP?

Even worse, I heard that the 4-8 hour battery life was basically the PSP just sitting there, IE not accessing the disc or anything like that. Meaning the practical battery life is even shorter.

The PSP uses a battery pack, not AA or AAA batteries:

However, you're right about the changing battery life-- IGN did a comprehensive battery test and when at full settings (max brightness, highest graphical settings) for Ridge Racer, the system lasted about 3.5 hours, and when playing Wi-fi multiplayer, the system lasted less than 3.

Edit: Link to IGN's battery test.

No...

Sorry to ruin the best part about the PSP, but the game is Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII, and it is NOT for the PSP. It's an action RPG involving network play. The story follows the Turks, and their search for Aeris. It's a cell phone game for a Japanese brand of cell phones. (However, rumour has it they will bring those phones to the US as well. --http://neasia.nikkeibp.com/wcs/leaf/CID/onair/asabt/news/330340) You can use the phone's built in camera to take pictures of things which get you different kinds of materia. For example, if your picture is mostly white, you'll get cure materia.

The DVD version of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children will be a much better purchase than the PSP version, which is on a UMD disc. There's no point for people who have portable DVD Players. The PSP's version of the movie is on a smaller screen, lower quality, and all around suckier. You'll have to begin watching the movie on a full charge, and by the time it's over, you'll only have the battery power for a short session of gameplay if you want. Imagine holding your little PSP up for an hour and a half to watch a movie. Or if you were on a car ride, struggling to find the right angle to look at the screen (looking at the wrong angle, like a lot of monitors, will make you lose colors, and the picture) as the car bumps on the road, and turns. Perhaps you want to share the cinematic experience with a buddy of yours. It's not so fun anymore when you need to sit so uncomfortably close to that person, hovering over the PSP's screen.

There are lots of moving parts inside of the PSP, because it uses discs. A lot of people in Japan are taking theirs back under warranty due to disc read errors (and complaints of the buttons frequently sticking? ) and finding the systems durability to be less than suitable for a handheld. Those people who have these problems and ordered from an import site are screwed-- good luck getting another one. To those in Japan, Sony only carries an uncomprehensive 90 day warranty for all of their products, and if something where to happen after that short time... Well, you're looking at near $200 + memory card prices + accessories prices + games cost down the hole until you can get together another 200 bucks for purchasing a replacement. I heard a story elsewhere that a guy in Japan was taking his PSP out of the box for the first time, and he dropped it. Guess what? The damn thing shattered like glass.

The price of PSP games is noticably more than the price of Nintendo DS games at the moment as well. I hope nobody gets the wrong idea, as if I am trying to bring the PSP down. I love Sony, the company permits me to go to E3 every year. It's just that, they're trying to beat Nintendo at the game they've been playing since 1989.

Very nicely said, Kirby PopStar. I haven't wanted to get a PSP for the following reasons.

:: Loading times. I forget where the site was that I read it on (it could've been here, for all I know), but apparently the loading times are horrible. Some racing game was being put under review, and from power on to the main menu of the game was something like 20 seconds. I see that in other games sometimes, but that's because of the different company logos and stuff they put in there.

:: Battery life. I'd hope they plan on making a power adaptor for the thing. The life of the battery right now is horrible. If they don't make an adaptor for it, then one would hope they would sell the batteries for cheap. Maybe they can be recharged or something, but then, is that something you can do youself, or do you have to take it to some place and pay them to recharge it?

:: I've never been a big fan of Sony's systems / consoles in the first place. Rather self-explanatory, but I wouldn't go out and by a handheld system made by Sony, when I've barely played games designed for either of their other systems. That's just a personal preference thing. I'm sure someone else that posts here will think differently.

So, take it for what you will, but I don't plan on buying one of these

I heard the price in Japan was about the equivalent of 185 dollars, so, you can expect it to be less than that here.

I still won't get one though. The load times are supposed to be incredible... Some are longer than 20 seconds... And then that battery. I play my DS a lot, sometimes it's battery runs out by the end of the day in an area I can't well charge it, you can damn well believe the PSP will run out

As for the Game Gear thing. Sh-yeah. Those are the same people who said the Playstation was doomed to complete and utter fKitten Yiffer.

Were they right?

Hmmmm......I guess it's all a matter of opinion. I say that Sony did alright for themselves.

Anyway, finally the Gameboy series has some decent competition. Nintendo had better watch their ass this time.

I don't much like the idea of a disc-based handheld. Disc systems take a lot of power, plus you gotta carry the damn things.

I'm going to get this baby as well. I have a DS and so far it's great, but the PSP will be cool too.

Anyway, if Sony fails this time, who says they can't try another time? Like the reason why Nintendo is still there is there gameboy systems which they remake each 2~3 years to the current technologies.. We can't say they made their profit with the n64, neither with the gamecube.. just the lonely gb by itself sold relatively well.

Well good to hear sony are giving at try at that business too.. (Kinda like when microsoft wanted to enter the console domain..).

No mather what happens I'm still going to buy each new console that gets released, Either the nintendo revolution, either the ps3, either the xbox2.. All have high hopes.. and mostly all have their own fans.

XDDDDDD

Everyone's saying "the psp sucks, I read an article about why the load times/battery life is horrible"... and Leg posts this XDDDD.

Those are the same people who said the Playstation was doomed to complete and utter fKitten Yiffer.

People say this about every system.

Dude, the PS was owned by the N64 in every way. It sold a LOT less than the N64, and wasn't as popular .

I'm pretty damn sure the PSX beat the N64, and if not in console sales, then definitely in game sales. Alas, I can't find any sales figures online (though I only looked for a minute). It'd be great if someone could find those to set the record straight.

This is what I just found in a quick search on google. Apparently the more profitable company was Nintendo, but more PSX consoles were sold than N64

Well, that was the first result I found that looked to be about what was being asked in here. I looked a bit further, and found an article on IGN, but it's only for the first half of 2001 Still, I can't imagine the results changing too drastically for the rest of the year, but they could've Either way, here's the link to the article:

Er, well, I couldn't find anything either.

But lets look at the last consoles.

This was the Gamecube, not the badass DS, and it's outselling the PS2 by 20%.
