I was playing with Windows 98SE a bit... and came across two things :

Exhibit One - The 404: Desktop Not Found error

Now.... wtf . I was browsing in Windows Explorer. I went to double-click C:\WINDOWS\Desktop and the IE-style 404 page appeared. Perhaps Microsoft thinks that the empty space without windows open is better than in WinExplore?
Also note this: There are two copies of the \WINDOWS directory. One in mixed caps, and the other in all caps (I set Explorer to all caps)

Exhibit Two - MSN.com looks better in Mozilla than IE5.0

ok... Doesn't Microsoft try to purposefully make their sites better in their browser? However, I don't think IE was entirely to blame: It seemed to only happen when I had the Win98 Chubby Explorer set with 98lite. This makes the Win98 explorer look a bit like the Win95 explorer, but with toolbars and fast start menu editing. When I had it using the Win95 shell, IE5 seemed to display msn.com fine. However, other sites displayed fine with IE5... it was just msn.com

post any of yours if you have some! I'd like to see some people troubles or just confusement caused by Windows...

By default, Windows always creates a folder named WINDOWS, all in caps when you install that; at least I noticed that in Win 98/SE, ME and also my XP installations.

I only can think about two reasons why two Windows entries appear in your Explorer:

1.) Somehow you got installed Windows twice. Since WINDOWS in C:\ already existed, the operating system chose to create another folder with one capital and then small letters.
Anyway ... Windows usually ignores the upper- and lowercase of letters in similar file names; so XP won't let me create a AAA.txt and Aaa.txt on the Desktop both, since it says another file has the same name.

2.) A virus, mad ActiveX, Java or whatever object altered your Windows. Be sure to run your virus scanner with the most recent virus definitions, Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy.
After you are done, get HiJack This! (new version since three days), don't fix anything yet (altough you seem advanced enough how to use/interpret that tool from your posts), run "Scan" and "Save log", inserting the full contents from the .txt in here. ;aybe it could help, if the problem is malware-related.

heh... there's no space or anything for the two Windows directories. And this wasn't a help thread . I was doing it all in VMware. About the virus or thinger: Why would it decide to only work with the Win95 shell, but not when I switched to the Win98 shell? Also, I've kept IE uninstalled most of the time, so it's unlikely.

edit: oops... shells mixed up

Heh, VMware. Acmlm board looks ugly in IE 4.0, which is the version Win98 normally comes with.

Windows 9x series is so sucky after you tried the NT ones. I have Win98 installed in VMware for testing reasons, but I hadn't that much of use yet.

Uh, the picture of MSN.com in Mozilla...

That's exactly how it looks like for me in IE.

Well that explains it pretty well.

Anyway, here are various oddities I've got pics of...

Mozilla 1.6 < 1.4?
Random rendering error
Modified 3 years before creation
Do I really need it?
What a crappy program.
Again.
Runaway text!
All of them at once?
Do I want to know what that does? (Actually, it's supposed to say 'Phone Dialer' on one line and 'Test' on another, but I broke the newline code, causing surprisingly hilarious results. )
Trillian 2.0, now with more bugs!
Did I mention Trillian sucks? This is a fairly common bug, someone connects and pops up in someone else's window. Usually that guy's, even if he's offline and the window is closed.
Oh, oh, I know that one!
Wheee!
Ok, that's just excessive.
This is what happens when you send REALLY big images in Trillian. Yes, that's part of Visual Basic showing up. No, the image had nothing of the sort in it.
General fucked-upedness.
More of it.
Negative zero?
I don't think my video card can handle that.
Foiled by their own apparently crappy service.
And if you look to your right, you'll see one of the major reasons I don't trust MSN. This just popped up when I accidentally hit Enter while typing that path. (I'd moved the program because of just such habits.)
SMW toasted to a golden brown. No idea WTF happened, the rest of it was fine.
More Trillian suckyness.

Win98 first edition comes with IE4, Win98SE comes with IE5.0... so IE5 wasn't some random one I decided to use.

HH: Isn't that Gaim? It's not crappy.... it works perfectly for me. But if you are using MSN, I'd rather use aMSN than Gaim. (err.... wait. I see below that you have Trillian. It's just a Gaim-ish theme. I hate Trillian.)

About the bandwidth tests... They're often buggy. I can't remember the URL, but a CNET one lets you type numbers into a URL query to change it (xd @ register globals)

About the Windows fucked-up ness... wtf? I've seen tray icons disappear when Explorer crashes (and restarts again).
BTW: In Windows 2000 and up, Internet Explorer is started before the GUI even loads. Probably to have seemingly unfair startup speed advantage.

In your email program: Characters generally seem like garabage on Windows when it's in a non-supported language. I'd classify this as a Windows bug, though. There should be better handling of unknown characters.

"Missing smilies" just looks like you typed in smilies that are all black (like the arrows; <-- and -->). As for the other bugs; why not report them?

For those that still think that it's IE5 being the reason msn.com wasn't viewed properly: MSN.COM.png
That's msn.com being displayed fine in IE5 with the Windows 95 shell.

It's a translation service. There shouldn't be foreign characters in it at all.

There aren't supposed to be any all-black smilies, that's the entire problem. And I can't report them due to, er, licensing issues.

Your pictures aren't showing up for me FreeDOS.

This is one of the many glitches I have come across in Win98:

Apparently I can't copy the file because it exists.
