I'm just curious. Mine is like... poor. My school has about 1500 students, and about 100 staff members. Now, that should be enough staff to patrol the entire school, in my opinion. However, in the last two years I have noticed the student body in general feeling more in charge, and the staff also feeling less in charge. There have so far been about sixty fights since September... more than double the fights in the entire course of last year. Early in October, a few students got so out-of-hand that the local police had to come and break it up with pepper spray.

The staff in my school have also attempted to put more strict punishment policies. However, they have failed also. The punishment is like forty-five days suspension for your first fight; it does not matter weather you started it or were the victim. In my opinion, that does not resolve the short-term issue. The kids who picks fights are usually the ones that don't like to be in school in the first place. Therefore, suspending the person is like rewarding them in the short-term, like a vacation to the said student. In the long run, it will hurt his grade, possibly losing a credit and having to take another year of high school. However, the kids don't realise that immediately and rather think it as a vacation.

The staff problem: Many of the staff have almost given up. The few (they are a minority) that cause trouble just seem like too much trouble. Many teachers don't seem to give harsh and fair punishments anymore. Hell, the fight policy described in the last paragraph isn't always enforced. There are about a dozen that are actively working out ways in improving the developing problems at my school, however.

The student problem: My student body has learned a wrong notion that we have power over the staff. The majority of the body does behave, get good grades, and don't get into fights. There are a few though that think they are in complete control. In late November, one student was discovered to be bringing baseball bats in order to "teach someone a lesson". The someone also brought a knife to threaten the said student. Apparently, no one told about because everyone figured that the staff would take care of it. The problem was that everyone who knew thought the same... perhaps some even kept promises not to tell. To tell you the truth, if there is a problem don't keep promises not to tell. My staff for sure would keep confidentiality and handle the problem properly.

This has been a Mike Swanson® rant about his school \m/

Finally, a serious thread that won't be fucked with with billions of shitty mock threads (mine was a feeble attempt at being serious )

Anyway, Foothill's administration is bullshit. W have (literally) school police to break stuff up, and fighting earns anywhere between 3 and two weeks...

Tons of people smoke pot there because no one can catch them (when they're in the bathroom), but... eh.

oh well, nothing you can do.

Homeschool. The courses I take are painfully easy... I expect to finally graduate high school sometime next January v_v

I used to go to a normal school, though, so I can speak for that. The rules made no sense. Fighting, even repeated fighting, gains you a lecture and nothing more. Chewing gum or using any sort of electronic device, though...

My school administration is a college one, and naturally they're just a bunch of greedy suits. The student gov't are pretty much chickenshits in my opinion.

45 DAYS? So, someone beats you up, and you fail. Makes sense to me. NOT.

Mine is so retarded. (I've mentioned this elsewhere but hell, this is an official thread. ) Their rules seem like they just threw all the rules in one hat, and all the consequences in another, and picked and matched. Then suspended whoever supplied the hats. Observe:
Wearing hats: 3+ day suspension (ONO u wore a hat ur in teh gang)
Setting fire: 3+ day suspension (quoted right from the book)
Swearing: detention (these teachers know how to read? I didn't get a detention, I got suspended for 3 days. )
Etc. As usual, everyone involved in a fight gets the same treatment. Sounds fair at first, but think about it - someone comes up and starts whaling on you, they get in trouble. You try to push them off you (ONO U TOUCHED THEM ASSAULT) you get the SAME THING!

And would it hurt to have the computer techs know something about computers? The librarian does a 10x better job administrating her own mini-network than the actual admins do of theirs - and she once yelled at me because she saw me opening Notepad. Since Notepad != MSWord, obviously, Notepad == Virus. (Like I really needed to open MSWord to copy 6 lines of text? No wonder these computers are so slow.) I once had a disc labelled 'Antifreeze' confiscated - get this - because they thought it would short out the computer.

Also there was the Net Send incident. Was playing around with it, and tried to send a message across the room, but it (as I should have expected) went right through the router and across the whole school. Now the really bad part of this is that I was logged on as the most powerful admin at the time. (HE FORGOT TO LOG OFF. XD I just used his account, didn't want to close any of the important stuff he was working on.

But here is the absolute worst part. You may want to grab a bucket. My math teacher just recently assigned a big assignment, and mentioned that if we didn't finish it, even if we previously had a 100% mark, we would FAIL. That's right, you don't do this one assignment and you fail the entire course regardless of other work. Talk about a bitch teacher eh? No, actually. The assignment was actually rather easy. The big problem here is that it wasn't his decision. Every teacher is REQUIRED to designate one such assignment. Someone please tell me what the hell the point of that is?

Pretty much all colleges do their final exams that way. Either that or a final paper. If I sleep in and miss a final I've failed a class, regardless of my grade beforehand.

So i'm the only one being in a school where Drug usage is non-existant? Sure some people drink coke but...

Then, Drug usage is non-existant if you compare to US. And fights dosen't happen very often either.

In our school, we got new computers. And the ones who needed them best got them too.

University... hm. There's a LOT of staff, I know that much... and I've never had any problems with red tape. Concordia's a little more organized than McGill from what I know; there, you have to go through 4 or 5 people to speak to the one you want.

Really, the only times I can see the administration being screwy and disorganized is the first week of each semester.

Try to name a school that isn't disoriented the first week of a semeseter.

In the start of each semester, I swear that they change the schedule every 15th minute. Nothing is set in stone in the beginning of the semester...

Well sure, final exams are worth like half your mark. That's harsh but it makes sense... But I'm talking finals in addition to a regular assignment.

Oh, God. Feel free to convince my mom that she can get a good job and make friends in another town. (Like I had to. ) I loathe this middle-of-nowhere cultural wasteland the local 35-IQ hicks call a town.

Lenina's post just reminded me of another example of great management. Last year they moved my math class over the summer without even trying to tell me. I spent the whole day in the wrong class and nobody even noticed (since we didn't do any work that day). Bad enough they did that but you think they would catch on when one attendance sheet has me marked absent and one has me marked as 'needs to be added to attendance sheet'.

The one I'm in is actually ok, the my middle school... *shudders*

They banned Google because someone used it to download porn.

They disabled email for the entire school because someone was gossiping about a teacher (why not kill their account if they dont like it?)

When I went in the computer and re-enabled email for the school (it wasnt that hard), they in-school suspended me for 2 days when they couldnt actually come up with a rule against what I did.

They in-school people for saying minor words. Like the REALLY minor ones.

We actually have a really good school here. The complaints are minimal at most, or it could just be that I am just a tad on the easygoing side when it comes to such matters.

Student to Teacher relations, however, are friggin' great. Case in point: My friend and I spent about an hour joking around with our kickass History teacher and our Kickass English teacher. Then, as he was leaving, our History teacher mentioned he was trying to organize a D&D game within tha faculty.

Kitten Yiffer: It's ORGANIZED at the beginning of the semester, but the administration's under so much stress because:

1) People want to drop courses.
2) People want to pay for their courses.
3) There's paperwork involved for a lot of this.

MOST of this can be done on the Internet but it's still a massive pain.

You'd be amazed at the intelligence levels around here. You could hide them under rocks.

That flood bit reminds me of another brilliant decision by the administration. (I didn't see it because I went home early. ) They cancelled the buses due to snow. Not the buses TO school, only the ones going back. Everyone had to wait in the cafeteria for hours and work out plans to get home. (I bet they did it just so people would have to use the payphones. Those damn Millenium phones with the LCD displays, which don't give change and aren't even vulnerable to those old free call tricks. Greedy bastard school/phone company. )

Speaking of which, I noticed an unusual statistic. There are only like 5 black people at my school, and zero percent of the students appear to be from outside Canada/USA. (Besides the few months we had like 4 Japanese exchange students. That was about it.) It's not like we have a shortage of foreigners here... Not loaded with them but they're around. Where are their kids?

Don't know, don't care, really. Been out for a while now. But when I was in school (not going to mention college) it was alright. They actually worked with the students and crap like that. It wasn't really something that I needed to worry about anyway, since they didn't help me out, but usually the students who would actually go on to better schools and shit like that. Just the way of the world, you know.
