I don't pass judgement on those who do it, but I don't do it myself. I might enjoy it too damn much, really. Lord knows I have enough distractions as is.

geeogree: Maybe it's not just the restrictions, but a lack of ambition in regards to the general populace? Although that could be a symptom and not the disease.

Ooh, idea. I blame the Boomers.

Most things are alright in moderation.

However this should give everyone something to think about. Do you ever hear of someone who is high beating his wife? Why should alcohol be legal and weed not? Alcohol causes a lot of domestic abuse and other things. Although, weed in general is harmful only to the person who smokes it. It is almost impossible to overdose of weed, someone would pass out before they could OD. Yet with alcohol many people are rushed to the emergency room with alcohol poisoning.

Ampsterdam.

Japan.

Vancouver.

These places have booming economies, legal drug use for certain substances, and wait, what is that, they are motivated? HOW DOES IT WORK!?

A personal anecdote:

My 4 friends shared a house last year. They purchased cable internet and cable TV, which runs $75 a month. The only problem was that they didn't have a router, or network cables. So they said, "Well we'll do that next weekend. We'll make it a note." And they smoked weed about 5-6 days a week. Months passed, and still no internet. And I thought it was stupid, them paying probably $40 ($75 minus the cost of cable TV) and not even utilizing their own internet service. About 3 months into the semester, probably around this time of the year, they up and stopped smoking pot for a whole week. That very weekend was when I finally went with them to get the router.

Now, I would chalk it up maybe to coincidence if I didn't see lame crap like this all the time. Weed may not effect everyone exactly the same, but I strongly believe it will kill your long term initiative over time.

And that's just how I feel about weed. Don't get me started on other stuff. I worry a lot about friends who often consume too much alcohol. Drugs are bad m'kay?

I think I'm missing something in all this... What's the point of initiative and productivity if you're not enjoying life? What exactly are people supposed to be working towards in this life? Is there some plan I don't know about?

What's the point of abstaining from drinking and whatever else floats your boat just because excessive use might mess you up? Or because "I don't need them to have fun"? If you're a well-balanced person and use drugs in moderation it's not going to mess you up or kill you or whatever... if you're already fucked up drugs will probably make you worse.

At any rate, I find the puritanical abstinence mindset a little obnoxious and condescending. "Drug free and proud"? Meh. I enjoy a drink, I like the occasional joint, and fucked if people are gonna preach to me about how pure and righteous they are because they don't. It's obnoxious. No-one is better than someone else just because they abstain from some of the enjoyable things in life.

wow Ziff.... way to not understand what I was saying....

I highly doubt Japan, Amsterdam or Vancouver are any more or less motivated because drugs are legal.... there isn't any proof that I'm aware of that shows drug use imrpoves work habits or productivity....

Link me to some definitive proof that this happens!

I've known men that have smoked the ganja for ages, and guess what they do...They're lawyers. They're neurosurgeons. They're professionals that are going to be a hell of a lot more successful than you or I.

I don't see what you're saying. How does the legalization of marijuana hurt society? Give me some proof.

I've never seen the points with drugs, although I know it's easy to get dependent on it. The problem is the first time people try drugs. "There goes one, and then another one... and another... *continues*"

And I'm (partly) allergic to flour, so I can't even drink alcohol, unless it's not beer.

And I've yet to see your arguments on how it is bad.

I never said I was going to criticize.... I just said that I haven't seen evidence to show that doing drugs makes you successful.... or improves work habits or productivity....

why would I show something to be bad, when you can't prove it's good

I'm not claiming their good. Absolutely everything in this world is bad. I've yet to encounter something that is genuinely good. An absolute article of truth and admirable.

I'm not saying they're going to make you successful (but you can tell that to the legions of musicians, authors, directors university students and people that are successful that use them ). I'm saying that the War on Drugs is detrimental to society and democracy. It limits us in our choices, it is a waste of resources and is a brutal waste of human life.

Of course, if you find promoting the death of people, wasting huge amounts of money and denying democracy disadvantageous to the common man...Well, I just don't know.

true democracy does not work though..... it can't.... not at this size and not with all the possible problems the world now has....

I agree.... the war on drugs hasn't worked.... but, that's not to say we should just give up on it....

I just can't look at a few hundred successful people.... many of whom started drugs after they became successful and could actually support the habit .... and think it's still okay.... many of those successful people killed themselves while doing drugs.... that just doesn't make sense....

I also can't ignore the thousands or millions of people that are stuck in dead end situations because of drugs.... I look at drugs and see more bad than good.....
