It was touched upon in the Zelda thread, But I'd like to bring up the topic of Emulation Ethics (unless there's a thread already for it )

The question is, how do you feel about emulating consoles new or old? Downloading roms while not owning the cart? etc.

^ But that's not its actual topic.

I used them for 3 things.
1) Old games I'll never be able to get a real copy of in a million billion years, like Bubble Bobble.
2) Try-before-you-buy.
3) Hacking.

Original consoles > emus.

The most recent console I've got an emulator for is GBA, mainly because I knew I'd never go out and buy one. I had neither the money needed nor the desire to buy one, but then I saw what sort of games were coming out for it (Megaman Battle Network Series was a big one), so I downloaded VBA and went looking for ROMs. Now, I wouldn't go out and buy a GBA either, because I know I can play most of the games right on my computer, and then there's the fact that the DS can play those games

When it comes to old games, the thought doesn't even cross my mind about not owning the original game and such. I figure that the game's so old, the only people that'd be interested in it anymore are hackers Also, some of our old NES games can be quite difficult to get working

Emulating new consoles in an in-between area for me. I figure it could be fun to play PS2, Gamecube, or XBOX games on the computer, but then again, it seems the newer the games are, the bigger they get Also, it's pretty obvious that the consoles would get harder and harder to emulate the newer they are. Even if a working version of an emulator came out after a while, it'd probably have so many mistakes in it that I'd look into buying the actual console instead.

In the end, I think original consoles are better than emulators. I don't feel bad at all emulating something old like the NES, but when it comes to the newest consoles, I'll probably think differently.

Indeed, hell that's the only reason why I emulate nowdays.

Sure I do play a short session of SMB, but heh. I own a cart anyway. And I really prefer playing it on the real thing if it wasn't in my warddrobe...

If I could, I'd try to change that thread title actually.

I forgot there was a general emulation thread, if anybody want's to move it (or can at all), then feel free.

In the Meantime,

my reasons for emu:

NES: to relive memories and to finally try all those games that were unattainable in my childhood. That and SMB3 is my favorite NES game

GB: See NES. That and Link's Awakening is my favorite GB game.

SNES: See Gameboy. That and Yoshi's Island is my favorite SNES game.

GBA: Once, to try Wario, but then played Wario. But then beat Wario. Then realized I no longer needed to purchase a GBA.

PSX: Own the system, just wanted to try the emulator. There are no real games on the net for it anyhow.

MAME: Play historic games such as pac-man. PLay old, but not too old games such as Simpsons. Play not quite new games such as Marvel vs Capcom. also, how the hell is it possible to own these machine in the first place without being filthy rich?

I dont bother with PS2, Xbox, or Game Cube. I own game cube for one, and I dont think an emulator of that scale would work well on my computer anyway.

Milly is the only one with any real power nowadays.

But yeah, ethics. I'd never download roms for a system I can easily go buy (GBA, pretty much). It just doesn't feel right.

As for older consoles, well, I never had a NES or a SNES. I have a GB and a GBC, but those aren't easy to get games for nowadays, and besides, most of the games I emulate are games that were never released in Europe anyway.

I do have a Famiclone and about 10 carts, though, and it is indeed a lot more fun to play them on your TV than on the computer screen. (Well, apart from the early Dragon Quest games and their damned passwords. And carts with dead batteries, which I luckily don't have. All my battery backup-supporting games have a working battery.)

But yeah, I don't like GBA emulation, and tend to be stricter when it comes to that as opposed to older consoles on forums where rom linking is absolutely forbidden and reason for long bans.

And as for arcade emulation, I have to drive for 2 hours to find an arcade, and they obviously don't have all the games I want to play anyway. I don't find anything wrong about emulation obscure things that I'll never be able to play without emulation. (and in this case, all arcade games are obscure, since they aren't found anywhere around)

usually, the only thing i use emulators for are playing games that are hard to find, which here, is any Snes, or older games...I could go buy them at one place, but they are selling them between 20-40 dollars, the original mortal kombat on the snes there was selling for $35...So i dont really feel like going and spending that much money on an old game..

so more than likely it's a used games store of which you speak. A side question is, does a game company, say Nintendo, still make a profit on used games if a local store sells them?

Look at it this way: Downloading commercial roms is illegal, whether you emulate them or not. It is wrong, it's stealing. No way off getting around that.

Yet, drinking under age is illegal, turning without a blinker in your car is illegal, and (in some states) oral sex can be illegal, but people do it anyways without remorse, so why stop stealing roms?

Only ever use emus to make F-Zero videos for the F-Zero community, since its hard to make vids from GBA games, and the F-Zero handhelds dont have a replay feature. Of course, we dont use ROMs to set our competitive times, since you could cheat easily, but to demonstrate strats and stuff we use emu. Thats about it.

Game companies don't make any money from pre-owned games, but I should think they recognise that the used game market is a pretty big part of the industry. I haven't played an emulator for ages. Most old games are getting remade or rereleased now so I buy them instead, like the Shining Force GBA port.

Rare titles.
Effectively something like demos.

Examples: I <3 FF3. But I don't have the systems that have the "FF6" on it. Therefore, I can play it via emulation.

I DLed Ruby/Sapphire AGES before it came out. Loved them. Guess what? I own both.

I only really emulate the SNES. I have a NES emulator but that's only for playing ROM hacks. I suppose it's because I can't find an SNES for sale anywhere, else I'd buy a real one and then go to GameCrazy and buy some games for it from them.

I emulate for old systems that I don't feel like buying for just a few games, playing rom hacks and normally Japanese-only games, or playing Gameboy games that I already have on a bigger screen. The only GBA game I have on my computer is Dawn of Souls, which I will probably get for Christmas (and if I don't, I'll just go buy it.) I downloaded it to try it first.

I play alot of games that I grew up with. Whenever Im at gamestop or wherever, I look through the classic games for ones that I liked. Ive got about 40 NES games, and 12 SNES. Wich is pretty good, concidering I have real picky tastes.

I play GBA games on emulator as my version of Renting it. If i cant finish the game in two casual days of playign it and i still want to finish it,Ill buy it. Most GBA games have equal potential for being crappy and being awesome.
