| Here. What exactly are these things for? I mean, what do they do? Why would I need one? I ask because I'm in the planning stage of building a new computer right now. I hear RAID this and RAID that all the time but I don't know exactly what it means. I know it's some kind of configuration but other than that, I'm clueless. And on a side note, something about power supplies. I know that having one with too little wattage can be bad depending on what programs you use and what hardware as well. But can you ever have too much? If I buy one with the highest wattage I can find, it's not going to fry anything is it? I would think that I would be ok but I want to make sure. |

| Okay, RAID allows you to either mirror or stripe hard drives. This means that you can either have two hard drives that are "mirrored" (if one fails, the other takes over), or "stripped" (you have multiple hard drives, this spreads the data work loads). RAID cards just allow for another IDE port. I personally wouldn't recommend it, because mainly, only servers will ever need that fast of a file system, and you'd probably much rather have two hard drives to double the data your computer holds. |

And I doubt Legion plans on running a server anytime soon.  If you have the extra $649 to blow on the system, spend it on upgrades. A RAID card's totally useless for you. |

| Ah, everybody's already explained. RAID is very cool, but it's pretty much only for Servers or Mission Critical things. I've had RAID stuff before, but never in a personal PC. |

| if I am not mistaken, it is because of RAID you are no longer restricted to a max of 4HDs. Although RAID gives you data integrity, it allows you to have a lot more storage you could have had before. Having 2TB of disk space would be nice... (edited by neotransotaku on 12-11-04 12:03 PM) |

2 IDE channels with 2 drives each. Simple math.  Isn't it possible to use RAID to join HDs, so that the OS sees it as say one 20GB HD instead of 2 10GBs? |

Essentially every form of hardware RAID allows you to join HD's in the way you described. EDIT: My old mobo had 2 ide channels plus built in dual-bus ultra wide SCSI. | You can't have one partition span multiple physical drives without raid. Even if you use mountpoints to make multiple drives LOOK like one partition, they still arent. | |||

oh...so with no RAID nor SCSI, adding more IDE controllers will work? hmm...so, they just integrated two IDE controllers to provide convenience for a user... heh, well I've now learned something new  |
