| I've been given a copy of VMware at work. Apart from the obvious -- various Windows installs I need for work.... does anybody have any suggestions for things I should play with in VMware? I figure this is a good opportunity for me to just play with OS'es (as generally I don't have other PC's to do this with) so I was wondering... is there anything you can suggest I have a play with now? I'd like to have a play with FreeDOS, so that's one of the things I'm looking at. I would rather avoid several different distrubutions of Linux (unless the case for a particular *nix is compelling), but would like to try some of the other stuff out there.... Suggestions? What should I do with VMware!? |

| Install MS-DOS 7.10 and Windows 3.11. That's a fun thing to do. Thought you can't install VMware tools in Win 3.11 due to obvious reasons. (MS-DOS 7.10 is on the net somewhere to download and Win 3.11 is not that hard to find with filesharing) VMware would have been useful if it did have better support for Direct-X.  I tested MS-DOS 7.10 with Windows 3.11, Swedish Win 98 and damnsmalllinux. (I love how you can mount image files in VMware...). Out of thoose i'm mostly playing with my MS-DOS installation. FreeDOS is better for games thought, that's one thing I realised.  If your brave, you could go ahead and try installing Longhorn. Thought I heard it's very slow in VMware. |

| I've already installed: Windows NT Workstation Windows 98 Second Edition Windows 2000 Professional Windows Server 2003 Fedora Core 3 I need the first ones for work, and my core (non virtual) os is XP if it makes any difference. Would Red Alert 2 run in FreeDOS?  |

| ...considering it runs slower than my 486. Hell no. Besides, I should have said. It's have more accurate DOS emulation. Not Windows 95/98. ...do you have problems running Red alert 2 in Win XP? Do you have the latest patches and all for that one? (little offtopic now but... RA2 works fully in Win XP with multiplayer and all ) |

| Ah.... eh, I just asked cause I wondered if VMware is perhaps a solution to another problem I have..... I want to play Red Alert at work... but if I play it in XP, it fullscreens and I... am not entirely sure if my boss will be thrilled with me playing RTS at work. If it's a window, I can hide it easier..... nobody else gives a shit, but.... still, don't wanna piss off the boss. But that's a seperate issue.... |

VMware is an awesome emulator, the only thing bad about it is that it is proprietary... Though I trust the VMware people not to screw me over  I use it on Linux... it gets the same speeds as if the OSes were actually install. This is mostly due to the fact that it is not a complete emulator like Bochs or QEMU. Instead, it uses your actual hardware and has some sort of abstraction that makes the VMs portable (otherwise it'd be like moving a Win98 hard disk to a completely different PC  ).FreeDOS shouldn't support games better than MS-DOS... it is aiming toward MS-DOS compatibility. unless a game is made specifically for FreeDOS, but that's unlikely. FreeDOS doesn't support Windows yet, and that's one of the extremely few software not supported yet. I would try out the more uncommon and unusual OSes. Like MenuetOS or Minix (heh, MINIX!!) |

I have a Mac, and OS X is a BSD  I love my Mac.... Eh, I'm gonna have a look at MenuetOS I think...  It'll give me something to do.And yeah, VMware rocks! |

| OSX is not a true BSD. It is based on BSD, nothing more. Real BSD functionality is only found in true BSDs like FreeBSD and NetBSD |
