| For some reason my computer eats up whatever free space I give it and stays at <=200 MB. Yesterday I deleted enough shit (and moved crap to another drive) to get down to 1.5GB free (for the first time in almost two years I've had more free than used, woo!) COme back, try it again, notice in my Sysinfo MIRC script* [Free Space]:-[C(crap) 0.25/3.01GB]-[D(more crap) 0.47/1GB]-[X(presario) 104.02/111.81GB] Wierd, 0.25GB free again? I go check My Computer... yep, that says 0.25 too, odd. Check Program Files. Odd, the folders I deleted yesterday are still gone. Recycle bin's still empty. Strange. Checked the swapfile. 98 MB, not enough to account for the audden 1.2G drop. This is really confusing the shit out of me, so if you have any ideas I'd appreciate it. I had that problem once. No matter what I deleted I still had the same space left. Turns out it was Norton Antivirus who ate it for whatever reason, it had some virtual trashcan that saved all the files you deleted just out of spite. If you have Norton, check if you can turn of their inbuilt shitty trashcan. I hated the essence of that feature so much so I switched to another antivirus prog  |

Have you run Scandisk/chkdisk? What file system does that computer use?  It could be a file-system fuckup too. |

| Hmm... Next time it happens, go into C:, have everything sorted by most recently modified, and go into the most recent folder. Keep doing that as you go through the folders and you should find whatever's taking up so much space. (If you haven't done much since, you might even be able to do it now.) Make sure you have hidden files turned on. | |||

Possible, but I've never heard of a virus (or especially adware) that fills up all but 200MB. The entire HD, sure (hell I made one on the school computer once  ) but not up to a certain point. |

| Update: turns out that shutting down the bad way causes Windows to not update the free space (which explains why a Scandisk fixed it) Go figure. Though why the DOS boot scandisk didn't notice is strange, I figured it would've picked that up... |

| directory errors like that is defects in your file system...probably for now on, you should shut down your computer the correct way, instead of the way you've been doing it before... which begs the question, how did you turn off your computer before? you just pressed the power switch? | |||

The bad way is usually just hitting the power switch/bar.  Sadly, WAY too many people turn off their computers that way - both novices and experts alike. Shut Down, then close.(Of course, back in the old days you just had to go into DOS and then close.) |

| See, I would shut it down that way, but given I like to drive this computer until it's out of gas (programs start crashing, out of memory, etc) whenever I try to shut down I get a [B/R]SOD, so... I do shut down my computer the 'proper' way but a lot of times it just crashes when I try to, and also I really don't like waiting... (also note that thiis was the first time I've ever had filesystem errors aside from FAT errors, but that was registry crashing) |

| Sounds like your PC isn't happy in general if it crashes when you try to shut down. It also sounds like you need to be a little more patient with your machine. Remember: Machine pauses are an excellent opportunity to go make yourself a coffee. |
