I've only AA'd TSUGARU Heavy on pad once or twice and the only part that seems to get me every time is right after the freeze where there's a jump triplet jump. CSFILSM I've only tried once (on your reference I might add). B'd it. Not great for me but not bad either considering I then B'd HVAM the same day for passing it the first time. |

Question from someone who's trying to make a couple sim files. What program(s) would you recommend for cutting down the length of long songs and figuring out BMP? | |||

Wee... Rahl, you mean BPM right? I'd use Goldwave for cutting down files and saving them in MP3/OGG. SM, if that's what you're using, only takes MP3/OGG/WAV (don't use the last one). BPM-wise, if you're going to use something that's a solid BPM throughout, most times MixMeister does the job. However, it does have the tendency to be off at times (like tonight's case; way off). If all else fails, you might just have to use SM's ticker and see if your BPM is correct. In essence, it'll take time to learn. Also, speaking of Goldwave, you can go that route to make sure that you nail the offset in a song. You'll need to know it to make sure you know where the song should start (on measure 1 in SM's editor). It's up to you where you want to set it, but you need to make sure that it's on sync. I'd personally work on a few edits first before trying to tackle an 'unknown BPM' file, but as long as it's not a crazy BPM and it's something relatively easy to figure out, you'll more than likely be fine. It's just time-consuming, mostly, but you get the hang of it later on. |

I ended up Aing Riviera on Heavy...it was harder than I gave it credit for on Heavy. The Heavy on P8107 (DD's) I passed with a relatively decent A, Cowgirl FC at ~78.5 mill, and ee I B'd with 77 mill (thought I had an A coming). |

Originally posted by Priere Or if you're really up for the hardcore-ness, you can calculate the BPM mathematically and visually. Open your file in goldwave, zoom in enough so you can see the indivudual beats of the kick drum booming...you should see a pattern: (Click for full size) 1. Select from the beginning of one beat 2. to the beginning of the next, be sure you got it as close as you can as possible. 3. Record the time for this selection. I suggest choosing parts of the song where the kick drum is prominent enough and not too droned out by other instruments. If you don't have kick drums, or you have an obscure rhythm, try to find a pattern that occurs every beat. If you can't find one that occurs every beat, try to find one that occurs x number of beats, and divide the time by x. Try to keep x as low as possible as you lose accuracy as you work in a larger scale. Similarly you could take half a beat and multiply the result by 2. With techno songs where the pattern is simply doof doof doof doof, it's pretty easy. It's safe to assume the beginning of the kick drum is where the sudden peak is. A handy way to hear if it's a decent selection of the beat is to use the yellow "play loop" button, see if the looped playback matches the tempo of the song (mentally speaking, of course). Once you have obtained that timing, we can calculate the approximate BPM from this. So lets do it for the first picture. Our target is BPM, beats/min. And we have the number "0.40", which is in seconds. We know that one beat takes 0.40 seconds. So thus: 0.4 sec/beat. We need to get this into BPM, so let's do the maths. First of all let's work out what it is in beats/sec. To do this we find the reciprocal (which is simplying 1/x, or x^(-1)). 1 / 0.40 = 2.5 beats/sec All we need to do now is multiply by 60 now to get beats/min or BPM! 2.5 * 60 = 150BPM, whee! We could have also done this one one step by simplying doing 60/x (1/x * 60). Now we are lucky here to have a nice even number, this could likely mean this is the exact BPM (because in most cases, especially electronic music, they like to use nice whole BPM numbers). But sometimes artists like to be asses and use 150.56, or maybe it isn't quite their fault and their rendering software wasn't as accurate in it's own BPM calculation.....well, whatever the reason is doesn't matter, you need to work your way around this. Let's try out the second example. sec/beat = 0.414 BPM = 60/0.414 = ~144.92753623188405797101449275362 Now, notice how this is pretty close to 145. That may very well be the BPM. Stick in 145, also use the AssistTick in Stepmania to help you confirm using your ears and see how well you go with that. (This is all after the gap is worked out, which needs a different kind of explanation). If in doubt from just one result, go ahead and measure the BPM on several surrounding beats. Remember: although pretty accurate, this method isn't for everyone. If you're going to spend 3 hours in GoldWave just to identify the start of beats, or the shapes of kick drums, etc... forget it. You're better off using MixMeister or even the Winamp AVS thing to work out the BPM... I suggest MixMeister though, it gets you pretty damn close, Winamp AVS's detector sucks . What would be the best way to get a metal Stepmania pad? Without paying my first-born. The reason I don't want a plastic pad is I know if I get a pad, my friends will use it. A 300 lb man dancing on a plastic pad on carpet is doomed to crash if he doesn't have perfect balance, which I know my friends don't. |

I have a couple questions of my own as well, seeing as I've just recently downloaded StepMania and gotten into the game First of all, can anyone who posts in this thread recommend some good simfile authors? I'd like to get some more songs installed than what I have right now. Just so you know, I have most to all of the simfiles by the following people. :: Hiryuu. It should be pretty obvious where these came from, so I won't say anything else regarding those. :: DukAmok. I downloaded his after reading what Hiryuu said in his comment on "Hell Scaper -TOUKKANKOUJI MIX-" at bemanistyle.com. They're definitely alot harder than what I'm up to doing currently, although I can pass Omega on Heavy, with a C with a bit of luck :: Reach. I found his the same way as above. The only one I can do acceptably is Tamayura, on Heavy. :: DarhkDaiz. I don't know if I have all the simfiles he's made, so I PM'ed him regarding that, and I've yet to get a reply back I have Speedy Cat, J219 Cranky, Bowser Battle, Teen Titans, and Teen Titans Larry. The second question I have is more of a general one, but what, in any simfile, determines how much chaos, voltage, air, stream, and freeze is in the song? The only one I think I've figured out is Stream, but I can't work out an easy way to explain it Thanks for any answers you can give to either of those questions |

Yeah I tend to ignore PMs unless they're urgent, I just procrastinate like that ... Anyways go to www.bemanistyle.com for all the original simfiles you can dream of. After signing up there, do a search for my username (DarhkDaiz) and you'll get all 20+ of my simfiles. As for the attributes for a song, this is the REAL definition (don't go by what many say since the programs the attributes, not the simfile creator). Voltage: Density of the arrows. Amount of arrows that will appear on screen at one time. Example: A song that has 5 1/8th steps in a row at most at 120BPM will have a lower voltage than a song with 5 1/8th steps in a row at 140BPM. Stream: Amount of steps in the song that are linked together with 1/8th note or less. A quarter note space ends a stream. So a song like Healing Vision Angelic Mix has a high stream, especially with the end having no pause at all. Freeze: Amount of freezes in the song. Air: Amount of jumps in the song. Chaos: This is NOT irregularity of the steps. Instead, this is the amount of non-quarter or non-1/8th notes in the song (1/12th, 1/16th and 1/32nd notes add to the chaos rating). And there you have it! |
