Do you play games with the keyboard, or have a USB adapter for using a controller?

For playing games like Nes, Snes, and old consoles on your computer (via emulation of course) what do you normally use, a Keyboard or a controller?

I still haven't tried looking for a good adapter of any kind. My friend recently got one that's for Playstation controllers and it works pretty well. (PS controllers being all around pretty good for any kind of older game), and it supports up to 2 controllers.

So I play with the good old keyboard, my setup for Zsnes is:
(Y and X might be reversed)
B - F
A - S
Y - D
X - A
Start - Enter, Select - Space
Below ASDF, I use ZXCV for turbo controls.
W for L, and E for R.

For other emulators I basically use the same keys.

Select r.shift

NesTen:

Yes, playing Nintendo 64 on a keyboard is possible. It's very hard, though.

Select: Right Shift

Project64 :
A: D
B: X
L: R
A: Z
Z: C
Start: Enter
C-up: Home
C-left: Delete
C-right: Page Down
C-down: End
Digital Pad Up: 8 (num pad)
Digital Pad Left: 4 (num pad)
Digital Pad Right: 6 (num pad)
Digital Pad Downl: 2 (num pad)

I have an actual PC controller. I still use the keyboard for RPGs sometimes, though.

Keyboard, not by choice.

ZSNES:

s = A
x = B
a = X
z = Y
d = L
c = R
k = UP
m = DOWN
n = LEFT
, = RIGHT
L. Shift = SELECT
L. Ctrl. = START
~ = SPEEDUP
w = SPEEDDOWN

Arcade four-button is z,x,c,a for 1-4. NES is z,x,a,s for B, A, Select, Start.

Keyboard, thought I do really want a controller for my N64 emulator. Using the keyboard for the analog stick feels... awkard.

I use the standard Nesticle and FCE ultra keyboard layout for NES but on SNES...
A=C
B=X
X=V
Y=Z
L=A
R=S

The rest are standard controls. Well, expect that I use E for slow motion.

NES/SNES layout...

A=d
B=c
X=s
Y=x
L=a
R=z
START=v
SELECT=LShift
Speedup=Space

anyways, I prefer a controller and using a playstation controller to play them

Well, if we're going to go so far as to post key layouts...
I have a Saitek P880, it's nice.

The red button is Shift. You don't have to actually hold it while you press the key either. The one in the middle just switches analog/digital mode.

FCEUd:
1: B
2: Rapid-fire B
3: A
4: Rapid-fire A
7/8: Start
9/10: I forget.

ZSnes:
1: Y
2: X
3: B
4: A
5: Start
6: Turbo
7: L
8: R
9: Select
Shift-1: Choose save state
Shift-2: Load Game Menu
Shift-3: Toggle Sprites
Shift-4: Restore all layers
Shift-5: Toggle framerate
Shift-6: Toggle clock
Shift-7: Load state
Shift-8: Save state
Shift-9: Reset
Shift-10: Switch input device (controller, mouse, gun etc)
Shift-Left: Toggle BG1
Shift-Up: Toggle BG2
Shift-Right: Toggle BG3
Shift-Down: Toggle BG4
Though the Shift functions don't seem to be working in ZSnes anymore.

NO$GMB: I have trouble getting the joystick to work with this, and I always use the keyboard for it anyway.
Arrows: Directions
Numpad 0: A
Numpad 1: B
Numpad Enter: Start
Right Shift: Select
Numpad *: Reset (not configurable)
Numpad +: Turbo (not configurable)
It also goes left when I press left alt.

Others I can't be bothered to remember.

Say, can anyone help with this? ZSnes has stopped responding to the shift keys (which are actually mapped to keyboard keys, and it works fine if I use the keyboard). Worse, pressing 6 turns turbo on but then I have to mash it a million times to turn it back off!

I use a $10 Saitek controller that I got from the Wal-Mart in Rindge, NH.

Best $10 I ever spent.

The one exception is MAME games, where my keyboard setup changes from game to game.

EDIT: Okay, two exceptions. The above, and I'll switch the d-pad to the arrows when playing level 11 of Battletoads, because the controller pad isn't precise enough to get me through more than three turns before I get run over.

I use the keyboard...

ZSNES:
A = X
B = Z
X = S
Y = A
L = D
R = C
Start = Enter
Select = Right shift
Arrow keys = directional pad

Layout very similar to the SNES controller... works good for me.

Mostly using a GCN Pad on my Computer, so it's logical wich Keys go for wich Buttons.

If I use the Keyboard:

A: Enter
B: Right Shift
X: $
Y: !
($ & ! are right next to the Enterkey on a Swissgerman keyboard), A/B or X/Y may be reversed.
L: Delete
R: Pg Dwn

Start: Num0
Select: Num1

Except for Neo Geo Emulation, I use the default settings (A, S, D, F)

I'm using my Logitech Dual Action, which is exactely a copy from the original PS2 pad with two analogue sticks. The only feature I'm missing is force feedback, so maybe there might be way to emulate a virtual Rumble Pak, which is handy when it comes for playing Zelda OoT

Emulating with a non N64ish pad is a bitch, since the analogue stick has slightly too much intensity, although I can play Zelda OoT still very conveniently, like walking over very thin areas like the chains high above in Goron Cave.
On the other hand it s really great when I'm running ePSXe

If I play Tetris Attack or any puzzle game, I rather prefer the keyboard, since the d-pad is not that good
My setup is on the keyboard as below

Start = Enter
Select = Spacebar
Y = Y ( )
X = X
B = A
A = S
L = Q
R = W
and the arrow keys for the directions.

I tend to use my game controler for certain games. Mainly the ones that my keyboard can't handle. Keyboard setup:

A - Space
B - Enter (numpad)
X - N
Y - M
L - , (Left pointing <) or n
R - . (right pointing >) or m
Select - Right Shift
Start - Right Control
Directions - arrows..

I find sometimes i can't do something. Certain Games (I.E WL4) i can ONLY play with a controler/gamepad.
