| I am currently planning on getting a DVD Burner so I can burn downloaded videos and what not to play on a DVD player. But I also want to be able to rip DVDs from friends and maybe even the local blockbuster :-D . I currently have a CD Burner Drive and will be getting a DVD Burning drive. Will this be enough for me to have a DVD and make a copy of that DvD? | |||

| a DVD reader is necessary to rip DVDs a DVD burner is necessary to burn DVDs (and it can rip DVDs) as for how you can do it, I can not divulge that information for it is against the rules of the board...but I can PM you the information if you want... |

Doing that would be illegal, so as long as you promise you won't, you're fine.  Anyway I don't think you can just pop a disc in and copy it like you can with CDs, but I don't actually have a DVD drive so I don't know a whole lot about it. |

Ripping an ISO/UDF (two different filesystems; the later is common on DVDs) from a DVD is just the same as a CD-ROM. Technically it's not illegal, since not everything on DVDs are just piratable stuff.  On *nix (note that /dev/cdrom on most systems will still point to the DVD-ROM drive): dd if=/dev/cdrom of=dvd-rip.udf |

| there are dual layer DVDs out there (~9gb) but majority of burners right now only support single layer (4.3GB) data discs... | |||

| If you want to burn a DVD that is copy protected than I'd rather to download the nice tool AnyDVD from Slysoft. It says to the burner that the DVD hasn't a protection so you can burn all DVD's you want. But it's illegal. |

| Well maybe it is, maybe not, but we don't need to argue it here. I'm sure he's using it for entirely legal purposes. Rather than muck around with dual-layer discs, why not get some of those dual-sided ones? It's the same as an audio tape, you just flip it over. |
