Nah, even Firion's self-attacking attempts missed every time. I guess they have something against chopping their own limbs off. Don't know why. (edited by Cheveyo Chowilawu on 01-10-05 07:31 PM) |

The system works like this: Level means how many times in that battle that weapon/spell/skill/whatever must be used before experience can go up. And because it's not a 1 point per use system anymore (thank god) the experience shoots up for low levels, and creeps up at higher levels. This is why dual wielding shields go up so fast. You don't hit them, and they don't die. You just keep attacking. The only thing that can happen, is if they run away. To finish the battle, just spread out a spell. Since the damage is pitiful, that goes up too. Hope that helps. |

Ahhhh, so even though you can't exactly attack, just because you're "using" those shields to an extent you still gain exp for that? Guess I'll spend some time with that. Common sense says equiping two swords would do the same I'm assuming. Is it good to duel wield though in your opinion? Right now I have Guy using two Mythril Spears, seems to be good. I had Mindu dual wielding at the time considering he was pretty high leveled compared to the rest of the characters. |

Originally posted by Xeogred Yes, it works the same way for weapons. But since damage is being dealt, it's not at noticeable. You'll want to attack yourself and heal yourself constantly. Then there's the issue of enemies running, I usually try to find a Soldier (in the field near Salamando) since they don't run. *hint* If you want to dual wield, do so. It actually works now. It's useful for an enemy with a lot of HP that doesn't want to die. I haven't though, because I like the evade. It's up to your style, really. |

Originally posted by Xeogred Apart from the fourth character, who never really stay long enough to be important, dual wield away, but try to avoid it for the others. You need the evade from the shields. Oh, and are you using Maria with a bow in the back row? Don't You don't get hit back there, so you don't gain HP, and then you die a lot. Try giving her a cane instead (they boost magic, and hit surprisingly hard), and put her in the front row. |

She's in the front with a Mace... that's what's confusing me. Enemies just won't attack her.

Originally posted by AdamantOriginally posted by Xeogred Sounds like a good idea, I'll probably equip 2 shields on her and get her evade up quickly and then do so. Bows haven't really seemed to be good anyways ... but I really haven't had a problem with Maria's HP, yeah it's lower than the rest of the characters, but I'm pretty sure she hasn't died yet. Still though, that strategy sounds better than what I'm doing now so I'll probably go with it. |

It's unfortunate that FF1 is basically the Origins version on easy mode. Although even FF Origins was a bit easier than the original NES version. I have no intention of buying it though. I got FF Origins and the NES version on my GBA, good enough for me. (edited by Deathknight on 02-05-05 04:27 AM) |

Yes, I own both Origins and Dawn of Souls, and I enjoy Dawn of Souls a lot more. The only noticable somewhat "bad" difference is the music. Other than that, the game runs faster being a cartridge, it's portable, there's new dungeons, the system has been tweaked. So, I just like the GBA version the most, personally. |

Yeah, I wouldn't have minded the changes to the system but putting in on FF Origin's easy mode was just unacceptable to me. I wish I could get a version that had no changes from the original except it moved faster. Playing the NES version of FF1 is so frustrating when it comes to time. You use an attack all spell on 9 enemies you're sitting there for 5 minutes watching it hit each one.

I played the rom for about 5 minutes before I started swearing about how I hated Squaresoft for ruining the FF1 GBA release. I'm not really a big fan of the switch to the MP system either. The extra dungeons have nothing to do with the challenge I'm talking about. Everything has been put on it's easy mode setting from FF Origins. Characters start with some gear, magic/weapon/armor costs are down, enemies are weaker, etc. That's all that mattered to me.

Aren't the monster stats based on the FFO version of FF1, though? A *lot* of the monster stats were adjusted there. (Look at the Fiends for one example.)

Originally posted by Colleen The bosses were tweaked again in DoS, although most likely based on the Origins version. But the point I'm getting across, DoS isn't as easy as Deathknight makes it out to be. And trust me, you'd never be able to do the extra stuff in FF1 without that MP system. |

The difficulty would have been lowered anyway because it's supposed to be a PORTABLE GAME. If the difficulty had not been changed, you wouldn't be able to get anywhere in a decent amount of time (Say, a short bus or train journey). Handheld games are made to give you quick results, and thus a good amount of gratification over a short period of time, as you often don't have much time to devote to a handheld game in one sitting. |

FF1 is harder and I found it so until you figure out one little thing... certain spells can be stacked. A couple of Haste spells will show that. |
