I was wondering if there is a program or something that makes MP3's smaller in size.

About the only thing you could do is resample them. Theres tons of programs on Download.com that help you do that. However, resampleing them means that you're reducing the Bitrate, wich means you're also reducing the quality of the song. The less bitrate you go, the less quality and the less physical size it takes up. If you need to make an mp3 smaller so you can send it to a cell phone as a ring tone or something like that, then play with the quality and bitrape. If youre trying to make it smaller so you have more room on your harddrive or ipod, then i woudlnt reccomend resampling at all. |

Well, considering that 128 (whatever unit it is) MP3s, which are the minimum bitrate for satisfactory playback, are already heavily compressed, you would be hard put to compress it even further. You can only target so much redundancy in a set of information. It might be 196 that is the minimum, but I can't remember at this time. You won't get any additional quality at higher bitrates. I've heard that other formats will tend to yield smaller file sizes. .wma (windows media audio) in particular. You might be able to convert them to save space, if that's what your only concern is. |

Switch to OGGs. Sound better, take up less hard drive space.

AF's got it. All you can really do is resample or change compression formats. If you were so inclined, I'm actually satisfied with Apple's AAC compression (M4P extension). Can't say anything about other formats, though.

The only reason why I was looking for one is because I have a very small harddrive. 4.7 gigabytes can't hold much music, espically when the majority of the songs are 10 megabytes or more. I downloaded a program off of Download.com and just by converting my "Misc. Songs" folder MP3's to 112 kbps, it dropped from 724mb to 307mb I can't really tell the difference in quality either so all I need to do now is to change the rest of my music |

Yeah that works. Or get a CD player that will play MP3s and burn them to CD-R. (Or DVD-R?)

This fits better in Hardware/Software. And probably the only reason for using MP3's are that it's pretty much the standard for lossy formats, there are better formats out there. OGG being one of them, and a good one. |

I use WinLAME to save/convert all my MP3's at 40-48kbps VBR (35% of 128kbps) with optimal settings and I don't need/want higher quality, but that's because I don't hear high frequencies very well and can cut them off I do it mostly to save disk space too, although it's not nearly as much of a concern for me ... there's just no point wasting space with quality I can't hear I'd use OGG if it was more widely supported, but I'm really not going to gain much from converting 40-48kbps MP3's into slightly smaller OGG's anyway (edited by Acmlm on 12-01-04 01:26 PM) |

BEFORE ANYONE ASKS: No, you don't gain quality by resampling to a higher bit rate, thank you. ||bass, I'll switch when I can add support for it to both of my MP3 players for free. Exactly, why should he use up extra HD space for the chance that he'll send you a file? When I write hacky little programs for things like hotkeys, I program them to work for MY computer, not yours. Same idea.
