This is really interesting. Anti-Spyware Test (Guide) Somebody has done a test of several anti-spyware programs, to see which are the best. Very interesting reading. VERY worth a read if you want to know what antispyware to use. Spybot Search and Destroy didn't come up the top.... but Ad-Aware got good ratings -- something I find relieving, considering that Ad-Aware is still my antispyware of choice after these years. (But I have a soft spot for Spybot too). Again, I state that this is VERY much worth a read. |

That's quite an interesting read, Tarale I use Ad-Aware SE Personal, Spybot S&D, and Giant AS on this computer. That's been working pretty well up 'till now. There's only one piece of spyware that keeps getting detected on this computer, each and every day. StartNow Hyperbar. I'm 99% sure that keeps getting installed 'cause of the P2P program I use. All that thing is apparently is a browser hijacker, and nobody here uses IE, so I think we're safe for now Never knew at all about that CoolWebSearch spyware either. Nasty sounding stuff Trapster: are you saying that since you stopped scanning your computer in school, you haven't until next time you're at a LAN party? I'd be surprised what the thing might find. Not sure if you know or not, but not all spyware is limited to opening popup windows Most of the ones Ad-Aware SE detects on my computer are tracking cookies S&D keeps finding some 'DSO Exploit' with IE, but it never gets around to fixing it for whatever reason Hopefully the most recent Windows Update did something in the way of that. |

Originally posted by Karadur That is a little bug in Spybot Search & Destroy. Two evidence: 1.) I installed Win XP on that new machine five weeks ago. Immediately after setting up Windows XP I installed SP2 offline from a CD- my first two downloads (with IE through the in-built firewall, later replaced by an external one) were Mozilla Firefox and Spybot -I had no spyware but already had that bug and never could fix it until today. Anyway I didn't use IE except for Windows Update then. My system is fully clean, I have no P2P software installed and don't use IE, MS Outlook and do a full antivirus scan in safe mode once a week. And I am up-to-date with WindowsUpdate. 2.) Check that: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/faq/36.html (edited by Surlent on 11-23-04 01:16 PM) |

I think that I forgot to mention that Spybot only could scan through half of the HD. It stopped at a file called "c2 lop", I think and it couldn |

I like spyboys immunize thing, what it pretty much does is adding entries to the host file. Which is quite effective at stopping certain cookies at least. I use Ad-aware together with Spybot. Becuse I like them both. |

What do you keep getting, Trapster? It may be that S&D isn't blocking that certain one from getting installed I assume with your second comment you're just looking for a list of antispwyare programs. Here's a list of links from the ones that are listed in the anti spyware test page: Ad-Aware SE Personal Spy Sweeper Spybot: Search & Destroy Pest Patrol SpySubtract Giant AntiSpyware X-Cleaner Not saying that you have to use all of them, just so you know I didn't link to Aluria SE, for this reason Also make sure you don't download any that are listed on this site. Check out the first bit of text on that page, and you'll see why (edited by Karadur on 11-24-04 04:23 AM) |

Originally posted by Trapster...Immunize stops malicious servers from contating your computer to install spywares through the host file. It's not removing spyware... I had problems with Coolwebsearch, but I think my problem was kinda virus related. And well, if the ad-aware program is advertised through a pop-up. It's usually is a fake one. |

The spyware company that was putting spyware on machines was, I believe, started or owned by a guy that was also a notorious spammer. He was trying his hand at a new business model, it seems.... |
