Alright, here it goes. I have been considering investing in an Xbox off and on for some time now, and just never really got that final nail in the proverbial coffin. I got that nail the other day...in the form of Halo 2. What I need to know is this: I mainly want a system with the best possible online community (let's assume I don't use my PC for that) when it comes to First Person Shooters. With Unreal Championship and Halo 2 already under the Xbox's belt, it didn't seem like a bad deal on it's own, but then I saw this paragraph in Gamespot's Hands On of Unreal Championship 2... "The new footage shown by Midway today for Unreal Championship 2 offered one new revelation that was unexpected but nonetheless makes a lot of sense: Mortal Kombat will somehow be involved in the game. Toward the end of the footage, the classic MK dragon logo was revealed, and a "Finish him!" was heard, so it's not too difficult to imagine what's going on here. Midway hasn't said specifically what will be in the game, but we expect to know more soon." Oooh yeah... *drools* So, the game selection is pretty much a done deal. What I mainly want to know is if the online community is large enough to have a steadly supply of competition, almost PC like, if possible, to make it worth my money. I was going to ask ... but you quickly answered my questioned. If you're looking for a good online gaming community, Live is definently the place. The service is great too, and like you said, there's easily tons of games that support it. (Not to mention Halo 2, a major plus this time). The Xbox alone isn't a bad deal, but if you really plan on getting Live, I'd say it's completely worth it. |

The $5 a month is perfectly worth it, as most of the XBox library is Live capable (and if not, there's always XBConnect...) and provides a ton of downloads. Plus, the Halo 2 headset is spiffy-rific. Get one. |

If you want to play online, you have to go with an Xbox. I'm not a huge fan of the system but it's pretty much the way to go for online gaming. Can't deny that. Just make sure that there's enough games you'd want to play to justify the purchase + subscription fees though. |

Do it. I bought my X-Box the day of the launch. For the first few months I was a little wary about the whole deal. Thought of trading it in for PS2 or GC. I'm damned glad I didn't. Everything that I want and a little bit more (in some areas) is on the X-Box. It has something for everyone and there are TONNES of controllers out there to suit what you want (hear that you "the only reason I don't like the system is 'cuz of the controller" dick shits?). Harddrive is totally sweet, the DVD capability (sure you have to buy it seperate, but hey, 15 bucks? WHO CARES!). Of course, Live. The best online component since b.net. |

even though its not my favorite, its still pretty cool, some of the games are better then some of the ps2 games, but Xbox live is evil..why the hell pay for xbox live, when you can play all the ps2 games online without a monthly fee, unless the game requires one..

Because Xbox Live is about 50 times better than anything the PS2 can offer?

I personally don't have either PS2 or XBox, but I've played a bit on XBox live at my friend's house one night when he set up some trial account he got. The main thing I don't like about Live is that you have to pay for it. Sure, some of the more popular games are on that console, but I wouldn't pay. The only game I've ever played on XBox that was Live-ready was Halo 2, and knowing what happened with the first game, give 'em a bit of time and a computer version of it'll come out as well, ready for online play. I've never played whatever PS2's online play thing is called. I've played games on the actual console though. Even barring that, I'd choose this over Live, for one main reason: it's free. Maybe some of the games actually require you to pay to play them online, but that'd be the company that makes the games' choice. I really don't understand how so many people can think playing games with people they don't even know is cool. Sure. You might want to be able to say you're one of the best people in the world at such and such a game, but that's about the only novelty I can see in it. In the end, I guess it comes down to personal preference. If you want to be able to play the games over the internet, that's your choice to make |

This is just another thing that occurred to me: Custom Soundtracks. The feature sounds cool as anything, but what are the best games that support it? I just got back from blockbuster, and the first game I saw with it was Counter-Strike. Is that worth getting to, or are there better shooters with custom soundtracks? |

Depends how much it costs. Personally I wouldn't pay more than 50 bucks but then I'm not a big fan of the system or M$ in general. (And it doesn't get any points for being a CD/DVD player, because I already have a PS2 that does that just fine without buying extra junk. ) |
