I've seen this before, quite interesting ... another fun thing to do (when the left star becomes invisible) is to move the mouse there and watch the cursor disappear, them move it out to see it back

::shrugs:: If you stare at anything long enough, the contrasting colour burns into your eyes... For instance; go into MS Paint. Fill with yellow. Draw a bunch of small purple circles, one of which is dead-centre. The longer you stare at the one in the middle, the more of them disappear.

It's a blind spot... woooh! It works with almost anything. There are some very cool illusions on Ebaums world, though, worth checking out that site for the illusions alone.

Actually, it has nothing to do with the fact that your eyes will adjust to colours.

Both eyes actually have blind spots where the optical nerve connects to the back of the eye.

Why are there not black holes in our vision then? Because we have 2 eyes, and they each see what the blind spots of the other do not.

What about when we close one eye, you may say. Well, the brain is an amazing thing. It actually fills in the blind spot with what it thinks should be there.

That's why when you move towards the screen, if the star falls into the blind spot the brain will fill it in with white, since that is what's all around it, that is what it thinks should be there too.

If I only look at the top: 4 legs
If I only look at the bottom: 5 legs
If I look at the whole picture: 4 tops, 5 bottoms and a nice mix

Interesting about the way blindspots are filled, that's one part of our intelligence that we can't really control

This is still one of my favorite ones:

Focus only on the center dot, the blue one. Now, once you are totally focused on it, move your head closer to the screen while still focusing on it. It works when you move further away, too, as long as you stay focused on the blue dot. Very cool trick, IMO

Nifty pictures. I like that blind spot one.

I did play around with the mouse pointer, I checked where it disappeared and were it reappeared for me.

God, the blind spot is quite large actually...

The bird/fish one I've seen before.
And for the missing space one... seen that too.
Spoiler:
The bottom picture has the shapes arranged to have more area than the top one, and it's exactly one square more.

It's a set of circles. However, when you follow it around your eyes jump to the next one down making it appear to be a spiral and I don't know why.

By the way, paradox, the one where the image flips over is copied from a children's book I used to have. You could flip it upside down and it'd be a different story. One was about a cowboy, the other was about a little girl.
