I'm BACK! With MORE PROBLEMS!

A few months ago I posted that my old computer was making funny humming noises when it booted up, and you guys said it was the power source about to die.

Are power sources replacable, and how much do they cost?

Yes, they are replacable, and they cost around $30 Australian....but I'm guessing you won't want Australian pricing.. so I'll just say that they're replacable and inexpensive.

Tarale, that depends on the brand and type of power source you need. (Compaq costed a fair price, don't know if it still is like that)

in the states, they go from $15 to $200 depending on what you need from the power source (i.e. how much watts does the computer need). What kind of computer do you have? Some brands require proprietary power supplys (i.e. Dell for instance)

They don't cost much, probably one of the cheapest computer part. I got mine for 15$ (Canadian money) this summer.

Yes, but generally, $30 is the average. Unless you require a power supply with more juice, or a proprietary one, but for the vast, vast majority, the AU$30 one is good enough.

Just don't buy an LCS one, they work fine for a while, then the capacitors overheat and they blow and make a really bad smell.

And don't go to a company like Compaq unless you really really have to. They WILL charge you more than what it's worth.

Get at least 400 watts, it's the standard.

Mine costed 60 bucks, and it was 400 bucks, though it was an antec "true power" one, which means it's really 400 watts.

six years old? hmm, it might be the case that you won't be able to get a new power supply except from gateway. You can try to check out their page about replacement parts... the issue at hand is power supply connectors (where power supply connects to the motherboard) have changed within the past 6 years. So it could be the case that it would be rare to fine a power supply with your connector...

it seems the standard has changed within the past two years since I have a 300W power supply powering a 350W motherboard...
