| In a recent thread, Xkeeper bought up something that made me start thinking. He said that the buttons at the bottom of the board look cluttered. Looking at them, I have to agree -- there are five buttons, and they do look a little untidy. I thought a little about how to tidy it up, and realised that there isn't a single button that is the same size as the another. There is 1 standard button (the Big Boards one) and all the rest are nonstandard sizes. I wondered, if it would maybe look neater if we made all the buttons the Standard button size. So... I kinda took the initiative and created some buttons, just three of them at the moment, to try to tidy up the bottom of the board.
I tried to make the Powered By one as close as possible to the original, although with a few changes so that it would be easy to read in that size. I understand that the original prolly has a fair whack of sentimental value to most people here, so I've tried to stay true to its design. The Hosted By one I also tried to keep fairly close as far as colors went, but did make a few changes. I didn't know what to do with the Donate one. I was wondering, would it be possible to consider replacing the current large buttons with smaller ones (not necessarily the ones I created, perhaps have a competition to see who can create the best, or something). I think it would go a long way towards making the bottom of the board look a lot neater. Thoughts? (edited by Tarale on 11-12-04 10:12 PM) |

| Eh, it's really not that big a deal now that I think about it. I mean, I hardly ever notice the very bottom of the board anyway. Besides, it doesn't pysically hurt your eyes to look at it right? ALSO! There's always adblock for you Firefox users out there.  |

They both look the same to you?  Really?Eh, I see a HUGE difference I also see that I didn't make the Powered By button dark enough.Eh, I'm not exactly real worried about it, it's just that I thought that Xkeeper did make a good point, and I don't think it would hurt to make it a little neater and more aesthetically pleasing. And as I am bored and haven't made 31x88 buttons in a loooong time, I thought I'd play and see if I could come up with an example. I kinda like the idea of having a competition to design the buttons, just for fun. I'm sure people can make better ones than the ones I did.  |

| Well of course they're different, obviously. But I meant it like this: What I see in the first group: A bunch of buttons. What I see in the second group: ....a bunch of buttons. I, and I feel a majority of the board, aren't so anal about buttons most of us rarely see anyway that we should spend the time to switch them around when that time could be going to doing something that actually benefits the board. It's kind of like saying the Danicess theme should be one shade lighter of purple. It doesn't matter! |

I am NOT obessive compulsive!! I am a bit of a neat freak, but only when it comes to the web and my PC. My room is a filthy mess. Okay, sure, this probably comes across as being obsessive compulsive or anal to some, but I'm an artsy fartsy type remember. I like aesthetics. |

Do you have anything to actually add to this discussion other than make mildly veiled slurs on my character? I asked for thoughts on the IDEA of making the buttons unformly sized. | Tarale, just because I don't like your idea doesn't mean you have to snap at me or accuse me of flaming even though you put it in the most civil way as possible. If you're going to use the internet, you're going to have to accept the fact that people are going to disagree with you and/or not like your ideas. I see it as a pointless act to "revamp" the banners at the bottom of the board. I believe it's going very much overboard and making a mountain out of a molehill. If you didn't want the slightest chance of people going against your wishes, then why did you make the thread in the first place? |

But please don't express your dislike of the idea in a way that expresses personal criticism, not technical criticism. That's what I mean. If you don't like the idea, by all means, that is fine. This statement implies that I (and anybody else who would bring this up) am being anal. While this was very subtle, I still picked up on it, and was mildly offended. That implication wasn't really necessary.
This was more direct, less subtle. Again, you imply that I am obsessive. My point is that neither of these were necessary. You might think that you were being funny perhaps, and not insulting, but I felt insulted. All in all, it gives me the impression that you were not taking the suggestion seriously because you believe that the person suggesting it is anal and obsessive. And I'd like to think that you had more valid reasons than that. I'd like to hear reasons like: * The staff are already very busy at the moment * The original Powered By... button has sentimental value, we don't want to replace it * Those buttons are too small * A competition would be a lot of hassle to organise etc Not: * It doesn't matter, only obsessive people see these things. Look, I didn't mean to upset anybody by posting this, I just had a suggestion, that's all. If nobody likes it, that's fine, but I'd rather hear more valid reasons why. |

If you're offended by that, even mildly, then how have you managed to keep from going mad during your entire tenure at this board? And that's not flaming. You took it as an insult, that's your problem not mine. Now if I called you stupid, that would be a whole different story. Moving along now... Now, had that word been replaced with "you" then you might have had something. But in fact, I said "this", referring to the idea itself and not the creator of said idea. And by all means, I wasn't trying to be funny. I was being dead serious. I believe that you are taking things way too far here and suggesting a "fix" to something that I feel really doesn't make a big difference or contribute to the board in any way of actual value. I don't mean to imply that I don't like the idea, I just think it's pointless. Again, why waste the time on something so trivial that would probably on benefit you and one banned member? We had a discussion about the Firefox button a few days ago in irc and no one even realized it was there until I brought it up. I might add that it was by sheer chance that I had managed to see it in the first place. Which leads me to believe that I'm not the only one who doesn't pay any attention to the bottom of the board. None of my criticism was personal in any way. I'm thinking the only reason you're truly offended is because I think the idea is pointless and being offened over someone going against your opinion is just plain silly.  |

It's a button that barely anyone sees half the time anyways. |

| Something that's pointless to you, may not be to somebody else. I just tend to believe that if something is worth doing at all (ie, having banners there), it's worth doing properly, that's all. The idea probably is pointless, but then if I really think about it, so's posting on this board at all, really. A lot of the shit I do in my life is pointless, and isn't meant to have a point either.
