Longhorn is still pretty much in devolopment, it's the same thing with games. Sometimes not much is said during mid-devolopment.

It's too early to tell whenever that OS will rock or be the next ME. But it's not stopped working on. This site have some good information.

I'm seeing good ideas, Bad course of actions.

As per the usual with Microsoft. I don't expect it to be very good. :\

Very much in development. I just saw the torrent for the latest beta build actually.

I heard a few things about it that didn't exactly sound too appealing to me... But we'll see. If it was just a graphical upgrade to XP that fixed major exploits/bugs, it would be fine. But of course it isn't.

I thought it would kill off some people using Microsoft because of the 3D graphics acceleration required to install... doesn't seem to be.

I remember that I downloaded a Longhorn file on a LAN party a few months ago but I think that I deleted it...

I wonder how Longhorn will turn out.

Apparently it was at one stage *quite* different from XP. My advanced scripting lecturer was explaining the other day that MS tried to implement a database file structure, so that search times and access times would drop significantly.
Guess what. They couldn't get it working so they ditched it.

Longhorn is slowly turning into the Duke Nuke'em Forever of the OS world. The opperative word there being "slowly".

It isn't that they ditched it, was more of they won't be able to implement it in time but they do plan on doing so. I heard this from a researcher at Microsoft who came down to give a talk.

Well if they're succeful at copying Google's search technique for Windows... hell wouldn't it be awesome if Microsoft bought theirs for use in their OS?

There is a free search engine from google which can be installed on your computer even now which searchs for documents. >.>

Apparantly there is leaked slow versions of Longhorn, i'm not surprised that they're slow since they probably aren't built for a wide line of compurs. Just a few testing ones.

It's too early to tell if it's gonna be a new success like Win XP was or if it's the next Win ME...

we will have to wait and see I suppose, hopefully its better, if not, its gonna suck, seeing as whenever you buy new computers they seem to come with the latest OS, so if it really sucks, like ME, it will probably still be shipped with all pc's when the time comes...

To me, it's sounded so far like it's going to be good. Mostly stuff like WinFS, Avalon, etc.

3D Windows and such? That'd be different to see, but it makes that old picture of an alert box saying 'Exiting Windows. Do you want to play another game?' more and more true. I don't see why you'd need a 3D Graphics Card just to use an OS. It just makes no sense to me

That Google Desktop Search doesn't work for me It doesn't like my antivirus, and some dll somewhere. I forget where I read it, but apparently Mircosoft wanted to have a google search thing readily available in Longhorn, and thus tried to buy Google, but they were turned down

The screenshots look really neat right now, but they first thing I don't like is the overly-big text in the folder name heading Oh dear god. Parental Controls? Eh... I guess they put the stuff in that everyone else says is needed. I'm quite glad I'm not a kid anymore though after seeing that

I tried Longhorn once. It had a lot of nice stuff, so I don't think it will flop in the market for that. It COULD, though, for the system requirements. My computer would take it, but my grandma's that's running XP probably wouldn't.

I read that Longhorn's gone into Beta, and that Beta 1 will be released Feb. 16, 2005. Sure, I believe it's in Beta, but Feb. 16? Nah... maybe Feb 16, 2006.

Well, it's Windows. Nuff said.

Seriously, I don't like the looks of it at all. 3D windows is a cool idea but realistically it's a horrible waste of resources. The only thing I did like about it, the database file system, is apparently not going to happen. (And I really wouldn't want to have all my files sorted for me. It'd be aweseome, though, if each file was 'tagged' with its origin (including, if you downloaded it from ANY web browser, the web site/URL it came from) and a short description/subject entered by the user, which would make them easy to find. Just type in say "ASM" and you get 'asm.txt', 'marioworld.txt' whose description is 'overworld data, asm, music', and '65816.zip' which was downloaded from 'www.website.com/asm/65816.zip'.)

*looks at screenshots*

OK that huge analog clock is just a dumb idea. I'd rather not take up 1/8 of my screen space for a bar just to fit on a giant clock. '02:06 PM' on the bottom of the taskbar works fine.

64MB VRAM required? I've seen huge games that could run under that. There's just no reason for an OS to use that much.

Parental controls? Ouch. I'd almost be sick, if not for the fact that this is M$ we're talking about. (Watch, it'll be a popup box. "You're not supposed to be looking at this site. Would you like to close it? Yes/No" )

They should hold off on 3D windows until they have holograms and you can just point at stuff with your finger to open files and such, like in those totally awesome movies where they do that kind of thing.

That. Is. Horrible Interestingly enough, you can still use that sort of thing with DesktopX and a theme to go with it, for those of you who didn't know of that program neotransotaku's screenshot is far too cluttered for my liking though

First point, agreed completely. I'm not 100% sure, but there's probably not one thing on this computer that requires more than that amount of VRAM to run I'd really like to know what they want to do with the OS that'd require that much. I looked through the Longhorn site from the link in this thread, and unless I overlooked something else completely, the only thing I saw dealing with that was a movie where they showed the opening and closing of the Notepad 'Find' dialog box.

Second thing you said, it'd be quite funny if that were to happen Knowing MS though, if you clicked 'No' IE would probably crash
