Some disappointing news

I haven't used WinAmp in a while (I've been using iTunes lately) but I'm sad to see one of the best media players go this way.

It's funny to think that back when we just got our first computer, I wouldn't have used Winamp if my life depended on it (I didn't like the default skin, that's all ) Now, I wouldn't use anything else.

As far as losing Winamp, it's dissapointing to see it go, but after I read what was said at this site, I really didn't think it'd last much longer.

The only other 'popular' media player on my computer now is WMP, and there's no way I'll ever use that

On my old machine I had Winamp 2.81 ..here is Winamp 2.81 installed, too
As for emulation at least it will stay in the ROM hacking scene.

Many plugins for audio are written in handy .dlls for Winamp 2.x or 3.x, sure there are standalons players like Super Jukebox for SPC files, but it is more than convenient to have anything located in one main player - plus the older versions use very little of RAM and are simply great due to their playlist ability, Disk Writer plugin and such

Abandon Media Player - that nasty thing wants to send data to Microsoft when open (I set my firewall to deny it, unless I'm needing a codec) or simply use Media Player Classic from sourceforge

...same fate as Netscape, pretty much.

Winamp will be alive for many years, since there is too many plugins for Winamp. People who like wierd file assocations like Winamp. thought a media player that supports Winamp skin would be good. >.>

WinAmp may be continued to be used for a while, but it seems unlikely that it will get any more updates to it. There's unlikely to be a new version, which is sad.

I like WinAmp. I have WinAmp 5 at home.

I use Winamp for most of the audio/video formats out there, including plugins that allow me to listen to real/gt files, as well as spc's. I still have WinAmp 5.03, it would be foolish of me to get rid of it for other media players, I think WinAmp is the best out of all the other players I've used for Windows thus far.

WinAmp will be missed.

Well... maybe the time's now to port XMMS, BeepMP, and other Winamp clones for *nix to Windows.

Eep.

From what I got out of the article, we might see a couple more minor upgrades but that's it. Pretty sad news... I believe that WinAmp 5 is a great way to go out, but it'll be up to other players to pick up the slack when technology evolves.

Actually, i'm quite happy to hear that the last guy to leave got a job at Apple -- working on iTunes

Maybe iTunes will steal WinAmp's crown...it's already making inroads to doing so.

But well, i'm not gonna even test iTunes until there is plugins for it that supports my favorite media extensions. Such as SPC.

...I was talking about the Winamp plugins there. Yes I do know XMMS support that, since I have actually used XMMS in Linux a few times.

Hell, even Windows media player support winamp skins. If you have powertoys that is...

Eh, not dead, but 3.0 did piss a lot of people off.

5.0 won a lot of people back. 5.0 was the king.

Huh? I didn't know there was anything past 3. I still use 2.whatever just because I have all the plugins I need (spc, nsf, and gym). I know I didn't like 3 because it seemed pretty bloated (if I wanted something that fancy, I'd use sonique (which I still do sometimes)), and 2 does everything I need it to (play music) so um yeah. What do you upgrade in an mp3 player?

Better support for plugins and skins, extra features, nothing you really need.
