How do you feel about auto-scroll levels?I'm curious, because I've noticed that plenty of people use them in their hacks, and quite effectively, but a lot of the levels could do just as well sans auto-scroll. | "I love them; they're a special kind of challenge." |

Personally, I loathe them. I like to have the freedom to move through a level at my own pace, and to go back and look for things I may have missed.

Theoretically, they can be good if they're done well. I was once complimented for an autoscroll level of mine that didn't suck; however, I maintain that autoscroll levels are lame and should only be used a maximum of three times in any given hack, and even then only if the circumstance demands it for something else to work properly.

I mostly find them annoying when they're activated partway through a level. You just start getting through good, and *bam* Suddenly you're over at the far edge of the screen, waiting for it to move. When that happens, I tend to hit the turbo key, and there's usually a hole or something in the ground for Mario to fall in On the other hand, in single-exit levels, when they're activated right at the start, I don't mind them too much. There's a few times where I've seen a level in a hack that uses that, and it's sort of a maze. You have to choose the right path, or you die. Those are alright as long as they're not too long |

Y'know... Just once, I think someone should make an autoscroll level with branching paths that work like one of the old things in the original Super Mario Bros. where if you take the wrong path you wind up back at the beginning. This could be accomplished with blocks that activate the proper sound effect immediately followed by teleport blocks leading to the start of the area. |
