(The thread title is me mocking the stupid assumption that the war was for oil and oil alone. That always gives me a laugh. Now on to the thread....) Here's the story. And I'm glad. I hope this happens. And you just KNOW that tree-hugging hippies are going to be all up and arms about this too. Even though it was said, and I quote: "We have the technology to develop oil without harming the environment and wildlife." And Bush also wants to start tapping the Rocky mountain area for oil as well. 11 billion barrels of oil. Right on. That should help cut down these astronomical gas prices we've been having. Sure it sucks that it has to come to something like this, but it's worth it. The ends justify the means. And hey, it's our oil problem right? So where better to seek oil than our own soil? |

I think it's entirely possible to get rid of oil altogether.... I know there are economic problems involved, but can anyone actually tell me what those problems are? Why can't we just get rid of oil totally and go for renewable energy, like wind power and solar power, or electric cars, or something like that? Are the economic problems really that bad?

I do like the idea of getting oil from our own soil but at the same time, I just wish we could all go back to riding horses. I like horses I didn't read the whole article so I'm not sure if its there but I doubt it was. How much oil does America use? I mean, oil that came from this country. |

I hate the idea of the ANWAR drilling. You know why? Its not that I'm a tree hugging hippy, but it is one of the last pristine water sources on the planet. If America taps that oil, the 11 billion barrels won't really matter, because it will have destroyed one of the rarest environs on the planet. The technology we have cannot regulate the seismic activity, and once an oil well is untapped, and a small shift occurs the pressure difference can cause a sinkhole or a potential ground swell of oil. My geography teacher had explained this indepth as he is an ardent supporter of not drilling in Alaska, but instead working more offshore sites.

ANWAR? Talk about a short-term solution to a long-term problem... 11 billion barrels is, what, 2-3 years supply at most? Invest it in alternate energy sources. Scrap social security and put the money into that. Do us some good. |

Originally posted by hhallahh I don't have any opinion on Social Security, but I completely agree that it would be better to spend money to develop other energy sources, like biodiesel. This nontoxic fuel is made from vegetable oil or animal fat (which we can produce domestically ad infinitum) and runs in any unmodified diesel engine. For the most part, it burns cleaner than petroleum diesel as well. Though you can make it yourself cheaply, biodiesel is more expensive to mass-produce than petroleum diesel. Why not throw some cash into developing more efficient means of production to make it a viable fuel to mass market? |

If you start pumping money into alternative money, then petroleum companies lose money. And if they lose money, then that means people will get laid off. And if the lose a lot of money, or if we entirely switch, all the oil companies will die. And then my dad will be out of a job. I can't really tell you what he does really, all I know is that it has to do wiith the buying and selling of oil. Because of this wierd facimile, our family is the opposite of all the others. We want high gas prices because that means more moeny for my dad....but if we drill more sources, that means he can get some more money as well. It's not no oil is getting drill. It's always drilling, and there's always new wildcats popping up and down. So, I guess you can say I'm kind of like an enemy in this debate, but I know petroleum isn't going to last forever... |

that would make sense.... since everyone seems to agree that it won't last.... and once it runs out, maybe we will stop all this crap about wars for oil.... and high prices... and all that crap... maybe we can have an energy source that isn't really friggin expensive anymore.... I bet if the amount of money put into defence was put into research, a lot more things would have been figured out by now.... but hey, missles are more important than everything else |

As it is, Bush tried to cut down the pristine Sierra Forests... luckily, Ahhnold or somebody sued the government and stopped that, for now. As for the oil, it's just the dying struggle of an obsolete resource. It is not as efficient or safe as many of the other energy sources, and, like coal, is ancient. The longer we depend on that black stuff, the more we set back our technology. And, ironically, oil is made out of wildlife blood--just some from millions of years ago. |
