Yeah, I got it last April when it came out. Never had a problem on the harder "normal" difficulties. Which of the two games are you having trouble with?

Well.. FF1 isn't very hard. Try to use figthing classes, since magic is pretty much crap in this game (though you do want someone who can cast Haste and Steel. Those spells are godly. You might also want someone who can use the Nul-spells (NulIce, NulFire, ect.), as they come in handy at some bosses. Attack magic sucks, though. Cast Haste on a Warrior, and he'll deal the same amount of dmage for the rest of the battle. And the so-called "Ultimate spell", Flare, is laughably weak. If you have a Black Mage, you're better off stacking Steels on your Warrior than casting this filth.)


As for FF2, eh.. Try to fight most stuff you find. Yeah. That's basically it. Your stats will rise at a decent pace if you do that. As for magic, spread it out a little. Have one elemental spell for each person, but only use one of them for seriously damaging the enemy. The others are just for enemies with godly defense and elemental weakness. Oh, and magic is to be used in battle, not saved for bosses. You get more MP by doing this as well, so don't worry about running out. As for the other spells, get Cure, Life and Heal. Get Heal to level 5 (or is it 4?), so it can heal petrification.) Don't use Life in battle unless it's at a somewhat high level, or it'll almost always fail. Oh, and stay away from the back row. You'll rarely be attacked there, so your HP won't rise, and then you'll be destroyed by some powerful spell that DOES hit the back row.

Well, I had the same problems on FF1, kinda... I had blm whm war thf as a party... but magic sucks...

FF2 I just wandered into the wrong place at the wrong time and I am going to wait till they release the new version of both anyways. They impliment a standered magic system in FF1, so that should make it somewhat batter.

I bought it to complete my PSX FF collection, but I haven't played very much of both games.

FF1 just got a little boring, being so simple, it was still fun though. I got up to the point where you need a raft / boat or something.

FF2 just seemed weird, with the character statistics system ... and having the entire world map open to you at the beginning may sound cool, but not when you wander into some town with Gaurds you can't even touch, while they can do more than a 1,000 damage on your low level characters.

out what to do there or where to go next.
Also I did go into alot of areas with
super strong ppl i could not beat or
excape from.

From what I've heard... You're meant to go into the place with the super-strong Guards. Simple solution: Don't talk to the people.

Never played that much of either myself, either.

Ahhh, sounds like the beginning indeed. First, check your keywords, make sure you have "Wild Rose." If not, head back to Althea (town where you started) and talk to Princess Hilda. After you learn it, head back to Fynn (town surrounded by a river) and enter town. Be sure not to talk to any of the guards. Head to the northern edge of town, and walk to the right side, above the wall. Head down until you see the Pub, enter the Pub. Talk to the guy in the upper right corner. Say "Wild Rose" to him. In the next room, three chests with Potions, you can pick those up if you want. (If you are going for Collections, then yes pick them up.) Talk to the guy in the bed. [event] You'll get an item which will now let you view the world map. *yay* Head back to Althea, and give Hilda that item. After the event, learn the new Keyword, and talk to Mindu. He's recruited, and he's your life saver for a while. Take this time to build up your stats a bit. You'll want around 100-150 HP and about 20-30 MP. Also, make sure everyone has Cure and Life. (Life is in a shop you'll get to on the way.) And as Adamant said, make sure everyone has one of the elemental spells. You'll want them at level 2 or 3, beyond that is almost pointless. (If you ignore them, at least get Ice...) Once you feel you are ready, you can move on.

Well, you don't do that. That way, you miss important info, like what you're supposed to do. That guy in the bed DID tell you to return to Hilda with the ring he gave you.

Just to repeat what's already been said (And bump this after several weeks, but the forum in general is kind of dead), for FF1 you really want a party that's fighting-oriented. On Origins, I went through it with Fighter/Monk/Monk/Black Mage, and loved it.

My reasoning for this party was this: It's generally recommended that the first-time player go through the game with Fighter/Monk/White Mage/Black Mage. It's a fairly decent party, to be sure, but as mentioned, magic is fairly useless outside of a few spells (Haste = GOOD), and the general weakness of the Mages doesn't help things. Given that the Black Mage has Haste (Which as mentioned before is Godly), and that your primary method of healing in this game is Heal Potions, I chose to swap out the White Mage. So why did I go with the second Monk as opposed to another Fighter? Well, the Monk is generally much cheaper to maintain, and in terms of pure damage, he actually tends to do MORE than the Fighter, especially late-game. Hence Fighter/Monk/Monk/Black Mage. The end result is a party that's ultra-cheap to maintain (There's a town fairly early on where you'll see a piece of armor for sale and go "How the hell am I ever supposed to afford THAT?!" I actually had enough Gil to buy this armor with this party, even doing things like buying 99 heal potions every chance I got, enough Pures and Softs that I didn't have to worry,etc), and goes house on pretty much everything once the characters hit level 10.

Note, though, that the party isn't entirely without weakness. The main issue with the lack of White Mage is that you have no way to revive people end-game without treking back to a town (Though this shouldn't be a big problem with this party anyway). Also, the lack of the Exit spell makes it VERY difficult to escape the final dungeon (Contrary to popular belief, it's NOT impossible; don't forget that the Black Mage eventually learns Warp....).

Hope I didn't spoil too much for you here, but that's my party recommendation in a very large nutshell.

I think that party would have to be switched around in the GBA port coming up, though. Although Fighter/Monk x2/Black Mage would likely be good enough to complete the main game still, I have a funny feeling you'll *NEED* a White Mage in the extra dungeons. Based on some enemy stats I've seen... It's going to be tough to just power past them.

Well, bumped, but in this forum... it's not a bump.

If you really want to use magic, though, I'd suggest (completely the opposite of most of the above) FIghter/Red Mage/White Mage/Black Mage.

Now before you call me a moron, lemme explain. Also note that this is tested on FF1 NES version (rom, of course) using some bugfixes to fix weaknesses/resistances, weapon type damage bonuses, and other stuff that no one notices.

Fighter because you need a tank. Red Mage is your main healer, as he has generally better armor than the other two mages so he'll live through more. He doesn't need the attack spells because he has reasonably good weapons. Your White Mage can then devote his/her energies to obliterating the annoyingly common undead with Harm spells. Black Mage is there because attacking a group of enemies is sometimes needed/wanted. Why draw a fight out to 3 turns with a physical party when a Black Mage can wipe the area clean with a few Fir3 spells?

The main problem with this party is that it's amazingly expensive. To fully outfit in the first town with 3 spells for each mage and optimal equipment, it costs 1095 gil. Later on, it's even worse. Although, you're probably only gonna get 3 spells for RM, and 2 for the other two anyway. And since you need two Silver Swords later on...

However, this is a good party to test magic with (with two users of each type of magic, you can use everything and figure out what you like, except with the level 8 spells), and if you can tolerate the astronomical equipment costs it should be a fairly reliable party. Later on, this party WILL suffer, I will say that now. But it'll be very good early on. And hey, you have two people that can act as healers.


If you still feel that you need more physical fighting, try Fighter/*/Red Mage/Black Mage. You still have a healer (RM), and he's still a reasonable fighter.

* Fighter, Thief, Monk. Any of them work well, although a Thief is pretty weak until a certain event later on.

Well, my understanding is that Dawn of Souls goes to a more traditional MP system for FF1, and completely overhauls the experience system in FF2. In other words, Mages in general will likely become much more useful than they have been in the past.

You don't want Black Mage. (Well, maybe you do in the GBA version, since I haven't played it, and it's more of a sequel than a port, really. And I heard they changed the classes a bit.) Really, name one, ONE, spell BM can learn that RM can't that anyone would actually care about. No, not NUKE/Flare, that spell is an overrated sack of crap. Apart from that one spell, the only exclusive spells BM has are shitty instant-death or stun spells. Oh, and Saber, but that spell is laugable. Yeah. RM has a weapon. RM can do stuff when you're NOT fighting a boss or a huge group of annoying enemies you want to take out at once. And RM can do that just as well as BM. Sorry, BM sucks. WM sucks as well, in case anyone was wondering. You don't need Harm/Dia when you have Fire, you don't need Ruse (Blink, I think) unless your battles drag on a lot, and it only works on the caster anyway. The only spell you'd miss was Cure4, but you can live without it.

Oh, and Thief sucks as well. Thief is horrible at the beginning, and when he promotes to Ninja, he STILL can't stand up to Knight. Sure, he has Fast/Haste, but so does RM/RW.

Yeah, the classes are a bit unbalanced.
