The topic has come up just a few times over a few years, but apparently something is going on. Oddly, the most information I could find came from IGN :
The latest issue of Japan's Nintendo Dream magazine is apparently home to good news for Mario fanatics who were a bit disappointed with Mario Sunshine. According to the magazine, Nintendo's upcoming Mario 128 title is being built around a new idea that's never before been seen in a game. Apparently, Nintendo refrained from putting the title on display at E3 in order to prevent it from being stolen.

Nintendo development grand daddy Shigeru Miyamoto has gone on record (with Japan's Playboy magazine, of all things) stating that Mario 128 will feature a freshness that was lacking from Mario Sunshine. We presume this is what he was referring to.

Initially believed to be a fully developed puzzle game based on the 100 Marios demo shown at GameCube's unveiling, the title is actually supposed to be a true installment in the Mario action/platformer franchise. Rumored to be the true sequel to Nintendo 64 blockbuster Super Mario 64, Nintendo representatives have given little insight into Mario 128 -- other than the fact that it is indeed in development. Described by series creator Shigeru Miyamoto as having unique gameplay mechanics, Nintendo says it's keeping the title under close wraps so that competitors don't have a chance to copy some of the ideas.

It has a page on GameFAQs. Maybe there's something on the boards there, but I'm not willing to look.

GameSpot doesn't have much to say. "Little is known about this title, except that it is in development at Nintendo. With Super Mario 128, series creator Shigeru Miyamoto plans to introduce unique gameplay elements."

I have no clue about the reliability of this site, but it sounds promising.. "His development team are currently aiming to complete Mario's latest highly-anticipated outing before the end of the year apparently, so we should see a Japanese release in time for the festive season, with US and European releases following in its wake."

Finally, there is this mess. I have no idea what to make of that.

Anyway, it sounds like a real project, but there's not a lot to go on, so unless someone can find more information, any discussion is going to be pure speculation. Sounds fun to me!

All I want is a good platformer.

Side note: after I posted this there were 128 threads in the Super Mario series forum. Hallelujah!

My long posts never get attention. I am sad. ='( [visual aid]

Let us speculate upon the nature of the "new idea that's never before been seen in a game"! What is it? I have no idea. Maybe there are 150 creatures, and you have to use little balls to catch them all. Who knows??!?!?!?

I got goomba!

No honestly, you can bet that there will be clones if this idea would be so damn orginal as they say. I'm eagerly waiting for that game. But... the lack of info is making me mad.

Here is my conceptual illustration of how this game could concievably work.

As you can see, the "monsters" you have captured can be pitted against those encountered in the field. If you weaken them enough, you can use a "goomball" to capture the wild ones. In this example, I am using a goomba, and it has three moves ("walk," "walk," and "walk) with which I can wear down the enemy Koopa. However, I am choosing to attempt to capture it with a goomball.

Anyway, how can we parse these statements? An idea that has never been seen before. Either someone is talking out of his ass, or Nintendo is up to something mighty odd. Anyone?

You are all banned from using humor in this thread because you are apparently unable to post useful content along with it. (Content includes: speculation on "new idea," opinions on nintendo's wisdom/sanity in what they have said so far, etc. Not one-sentence useless bits like "I wonder if the koopalings are in this game? ".)

It was a joke. Also, a terrible idea. Anyway.

I've gone through the entire GameFAQs board so no one else has to. There is no useful information. There's a lot of speculation, and some wild rumors about the new Nintendo console ("revolution") but nothing else. Except... a couple of posts, and the GameFAQs page itself, mention a 6/30/05 release date in Japan. (Though on the page it's noted as "TBA")

Zem, your game is glitchy. No seriously, having three of the same moves will glitch the game. Now you will see trippy effects everywhere.

I can seeing people beeing uncertain if it's a good game when they finnaly reveal how the game is. Then it's gonna change when the reviewrs get's the game... if it's that odd.

I can see success... or a big fKitten Yiffer.

Maybe we will see something on the next E3. Especially if the release date is in the middle of the next year. (if Gamefaqs release date is right that's it...)

I would be willing to call the Virtual Boy a fKitten Yiffer.

If there isn't something at the next E3 I'm going to assume the game doesn't exist... or isn't for Gamecube.

How old is this info?

Last I heard, with an interview with Miyamoto he stated that the game could appear on a random system, it could be a GC game, a DS game, or even a Nintendo Revolution game, and no set system was specified to where this game would land.

That was quite awhile ago, I tried following the link to marioportal but apparently that site is down, I just wasn't sure if that site mentioned what I've heard.

All I want is a true Mario game, like you stated. A rightful successor to Mario 64, rather than crappy Sunshine. (Seriously, that game in all ways, was sad).

Ive said it once and Ill say it again.

This game will probably appear on shelves across the world magically one day due to the extreme secrecy.

As for what I want... I want a retro bonanza
